Coping with Mondays by deciding not to do them

find me cryin’ all of the time”

‘T
HE DOCTOR wants to see you
again in six months,” the receptionist said.
She paged through her appointment book to
schedule a time for me, and then announced
a date six months down the line.
“What day of the week is that?” I asked.
“It’s a Monday,” she replied.
“No,” I said. “I don’t make any plans for
Mondays. Mondays are my days for doing
nothing.”
She looked at me as if she were a maitre
d’ and I had just turned down a hard-to-get
reservation at a very exclusive restaurant.
Then she turned the page, and asked if
Tuesday was OK for me.
“What time?” I asked.
“9 a.m.”
“No, I don’t make any plans before 10.”
This time her look said, “don’t you know
people are dying for these appointments?”
Fortunately she had an appointment at 11,
so we settled on that. I thought she deserved
an explanation. But I didn’t give her one.
However, I wasn’t being obstinate or
impertinent. I was simply following a
method of living I had adopted since retiring
many years ago. You see, all of my life I
dreaded Mondays. I either had to go back to
school or back to work on Monday, always at
a very early time in the morning. Now that
I’m retired I don’t schedule anything on
Mondays so I can look forward to doing
nothing.
When I was growing up in Buffalo, N.Y.,
we had many “snow days.” If it snowed during the night we would turn the radio on
early in the morning to listen to the school
closing announcements. We would shout for

care center. Invariably one or two of the
office personnel called in sick on Mondays.

and schedule things that are pleasant — coffee with the guys, a crossword puzzle, a muscle-soothing suspension of tension while
using the hot tub as a think tank, an almond
croissant at Lafayette Bakery, a quick peek at
the alarm clock before rolling over. Best of
all, whether or not I do any of these things
will have no impact on altering or illuminating our times.
This retirement policy may not work for
everyone. It works for me. It is my personal
blowback against the more than 3,000
Mondays between 1st grade and retirement.
I’m not sure exactly how many there have
been. I don’t want to think about that now.

way of the pursuing dog to avoid contact. He had his dog behind
him while the loose dog continued toward them. He brought his
leg up from the ground in a protective action, and the loose dog
stopped. Contact was made with the loose-dog owner, who then
placed the dog on the leash. The offending dog owner did not
show concern, and the citizen stated he would report the incident.

off leash again as the citizen was leaving. Followup needed.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Driver reported damage to her vehicle
from the sidewalk during parking maneuver at Dolores and
Eighth. She claimed the previously eroded curb caused the damage. Driver was educated that damage was caused by a vehicle
hitting the curb, which is a traffic collision. Driver was grateful
for the clarification and requested the eroded curb be reported to
public works for maintenance. Public works notified of curb via
email the same day as this report.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: A citizen came to the station to report
that he and his dog were menaced by a dog in Mission Trail park.
The offending dog was off leash and bolted toward them, showing aggressive behavior such as growling and baring teeth. The

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Resident reported finding an unattended backpack in his front yard on Scenic south of Ocean.
Backpack was collected as found property. A few hours later, the
backpack was retuned to the same residence because it belonged
to the homeowner’s grandson. There was a miscommunication on
their part.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: A 20-year-old female was arrested at
Mission and Fifth for public intoxication, battery on a police
officer, resisting arrest and drug possession. She was lodged at
county jail.

Carmel area: Via Paloma resident believed someone snuck
into her home and stole her purse and keys.
Carmel Valley: Contacted a Laguna Robles resident regarding a runaway-juvenile report.
Pacific Grove: Report of a vehicle on fire in the parking lot
of Country Club Gate center. BMW’s engine compartment was
on fire, with fire coming from the top of the engine. Registered
owner noticed an odd smell while driving. As they pulled in to
the parking lot, smoke began to come from under the hood.
Flames grew after the vehicle was parked. Fire put out by fire
department. Owner called tow truck.
Pacific Grove: Citizen on 16th Avenue was bitten by a cat
while handling it for a procedure. Cat to be quarantined for 10
days.

extra barrel for destruction. Officer took custody of the weapon,
photographed it, made it safe and packaged it for destruction.
Pacific Grove: Juvenile reported that he exchanged words
with another juvenile. The other party pulled out a small pocketknife and made a stabbing motion. The juvenile did not know
the suspect’s last name or how to get in contact with him.
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 8
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Subject from Michigan asked for a
breathalyzer test as terms of his probation; stated his own device
stopped working and he wanted proof he was in compliance.
Checked OK.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Female at San Carlos and Eighth reported she was concerned over a Facebook post she read on the
Internet. The author of the Facebook post was contacted, and it
was determined the female may have misinterpreted the
Facebook post.

Road reported a vehicle burglary.
Pebble Beach: Lariat Lane resident reported a verbal argument via telephone in regards to
a civil matter.
Pacific Grove: A mentally ill patient struck
another patient in the back with a closed fist
because he was unable to get his MP3 player’s
battery to charge. Staff requested that this incident be documented.
Pacific Grove: Male informed officers that
his fiancée took off in his vehicle, a white 1995
BMW 325is bearing CA license plate
3CUY111. The male alleged that his fiancée
had been drinking, and he was concerned she
might wreck his car. The male would not elaborate as to what he and his fiancée were arguing
about. A few hours later, he called back and
wanted to file a vehicle theft report. Upon contacting him, he stated he was concerned that if
he didn’t file a report, his fiancée might damage
his vehicle. Upon further questioning, the male
admitted that his fiancée frequently uses the
vehicle, since they live together, and she is on
his insurance as one of the primary drivers. The
male was advised that this is a civil matter. An
area check was conducted with negative results.
THURSDAY, APRIL 9
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Party 1 had a malfunctioning parking brake and did not turn his
wheels to the curb while parked on a grade.
Vehicle 1 rolled into Vehicle 2, causing minor
damage to Vehicle 2.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Gardener at Casanova
and Fourth was cited for using a gas leaf blow-
Carmel-by-the-Sea: A citizen reported the
theft of personal property from a residence at
Carpenter and First while loading a vehicle in
the driveway.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Vehicle’s side mirror
struck a car parked on Rio Road. Driver got out
of his car to see if there was any damage to the
car. There was a man sitting in one of the cars
who cursed at him and told him to get away. He
came to the station to leave his information.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Subject reported losing a wallet between 1100 hours and 1600
hours. Wallet found at 1710 hours by owner.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Subject reported losing a camera on Carmel River Beach.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Wallet found on the
beach. Owner called, voicemail left, owner
came in to retrieve wallet.
Carmel Valley: A 19-year-old female
reported a burglary to her vehicle at Mid Valley
Center.
Carmel Valley: Burglary on Valley Greens
Circle.
Carmel Valley: Responded to a possible
overdose on Carmel Valley Road. Individual
was determined a danger to herself when she
refused all medical attention after possibly taking 76 pills of Oxycodone.
Carmel area: Subjects were contacted on
Los Arboles and detained for a Monterey P.D.
officer in reference to a PC 417 [displaying a
deadly weapon].
Carmel area: Resident on Los Arboles
Road reported that a 33-year-old female broke a
window of a shed.
Pacific Grove: School resource officer on
Forest Avenue was advised a student had poked
another student with an X-Acto knife. All parties were contacted. This case is still under
investigation.
Pacific Grove: Lighthouse Avenue property
owner reported a tenant is bothering workers
hired to do construction work on the main
house. Tenant contacted and advised work can
be done.
Pacific Grove: Officers responded to a
report of an accident on Ocean View where a
vehicle drove off the road and onto the rec
trail. The car destroyed a large amount of
the wood fence and caused structural damage to the concrete wall. The driver, a 20year-old male, was found to be under the
influence of a drug, performed FSTs, and
was arrested and booked at PGPD.
Pacific Grove: Officers dispatched to
PGHS for a suspicious man seen leaving the
boys’ restroom in C Wing. The male told staff
when contacted he was only using the bathroom. The man left in a silver Subaru vehicle
with paper plates before police arrived. Area
checked. Unable to locate male or vehicle.
Pacific Grove: Estate attorney of a
deceased client turned in firearms for destruction. The firearms owner (deceased), the
lawyer, and the weapons’ serial numbers had no
warrants. Live ammunition was also surrendered. Officer photographed, made safe, packaged and booked all items into evidence for
destruction.
Pacific Grove: Resident alleged that one of
her daughters said her father touched her private parts on the outside of her clothing. The
female requested officers to investigate this
matter.
FRIDAY, APRIL 10
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Suspect used a fraudulent credit card and drivers license to purchase a
Cartier watch at San Carlos and Ocean.
Investigation continues.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Person found a credit
card by a parking meter on Ocean at San Carlos
Gardener’s Delight in Carmel Valley Village

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Vehicle failed to yield
to oncoming traffic on Ocean Avenue, causing

and Sixth reported a satellite TV technician
took a cell phone from the home but later
returned it. The technician at first denied it but
later admitted it to the person. The person
wished the incident documented. Satellite company contacted and provided the information
regarding the technician and incident.
Information only.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Person found a wallet
at San Carlos and Fifth. Owner contacted and
picked up the wallet at 1410 hours.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Woman at Casanova
and 10th reported putting her wallet on top of
her car and driving off.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: Unknown person stole
a wallet from an unlocked truck parked at
Carmelo and Eighth.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: The 29-year-old male
driver of a vehicle was cited at Rio and Oliver
for possession of marijuana and driving on a
suspended driver’s license.
Carmel area: A 33-year-old female took a
piece of glass and brandished it as a weapon
while threatening to cut a 29-year-old male on
Los Arboles. She ran from deputies when she
was told to get out of her car and resisted arrest
when arrested. She was arrested and transported to the Monterey County Jail.
Pacific Grove: Dispatched to a report of a
male subject breaking into a house on Fountain
Avenue at 0726 hours. Officer located him
across the street attempting to jump a fence. He
was positively identified by the resident.
Officer arrested the man and also located stolen
property on the suspect he later admitted to taking from unlocked vehicles in the area. Property
returned to identified victims.
