Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 8, 2015 In today’s first reading, Job laments his difficult life. In the second reading, St. Paul tells us that he is simply doing what he must, for it can be no other way for a disciple of Christ. In the Gospel, Jesus shows us both simple and profound acts of compassion as he continues his healing and preaching ministry throughout Galilee. Although it is difficult to understand the human mystery of sickness and suffering, the Christian faith, through the cross of Christ, brings healing to sickness and meaning to suffering. Through the Church, Jesus’ healing power is really present to the world. Lenten dinners – Volunteers meeting This coming Tuesday, February 10, at 7pm, all Lenten dinner volunteers are invited to a general meeting in the parish hall. Ray Lucido wants to make sure that this year our dinners are going to be the best and that all volunteers know what is happening. While being fundraising events these dinners also build up our parish and bring us closer together. Thank you to all volunteers who make this event happen each year. Please spread the word around about our dinners. Beginning with next weekend, we will publish the menu. Mass Intentions - Offer a Mass Beginning with this weekend our Mass schedule is wide open. Since there were no intentions, I added recently deceased parishioners. Please consider offering Masses for your loved ones, living or deceased. Having the entire community praying for a person is a powerful spiritual experience. Consider writing down certain dates of your loved ones (date of birth, marriage, death etc.) and offer Masses on those special days. Offering Masses for our living or deceased has been a long tradition within our Church. You may offer a Mass for any occasion such as the birth of a child, marriage anniversary, healing and peace, finding a job, etc. All Mass intentions are published in our bulletins and posted on our website. Call or email us if you would like to offer a Mass. Bishop Garcia wants your opinion via online survey Our bishop is committed to consulting broadly with everyone in the diocese, clergy and lay people, in preparation for the 2015 Ordinary Synod on the Family. The official “Lineamenta” from the Holy See is available online in English and Spanish. It is important that you read the full document prior to taking the online survey questions. Documents and survey are available at: https://www.dioceseofmonterey.org/article.aspx? id=242&2015+Synod+on+the+Family+Survey 2015 Annual Ministry Appeal If you donated in the past for this purpose, probably you received in mail some info directly from the diocese; this is the first time our diocese sent this info to the donors. We will start this appeal with the first Sunday of Lent and finish, hopefully, before Easter. More info will be published in the future bulletins. This year the theme is: Deepening the Faith, Together in Service. New Hand Railing—Last week we installed new guard and hand railing at the entrance of our church. The previous rails were not only broken and rusted but the base plates were not properly anchored. It is most probably that the previous rails are the original ones when the last church remodeling took place around 1970s. We thank Fred Luiz for coordinating this project. Marriage Outdoors / Outside the Church Recently we received few calls regarding marriage outdoors. From a church point of view, any valid marriage where one party is Catholic must be officiated in the church or receive a dispensation from the bishop to be celebrated somewhere else, be it in another church/building or outdoors. Our bishop does give permission to officiate marriages outside the church only when the non-Catholic party is not baptized. The permission to marry outside the church is to be celebrated with the Liturgy of the Word and the Rite of Marriage. This ceremony is not a full Mass. Let’s say that the marriage is between two Catholics or one Catholic and a Baptist… In this case, we must perform a valid Catholic wedding ceremony in the parish church prior to your off site ceremony. This fulfills the canonical obligation of the Church. Once married in the church – be it in a brief ceremony - technically your outdoor marriage is a renewal of vows. The marriage license is signed after the church ceremony. In that way, we fulfill the canon law of the church but also the desire of some people who would love to tie the knot in the greatest cathedral God ever built, nature… Patronize our advertisers!!! Of Water Credits & Empty Lot Thank you to all who emailed or talked to me about your suggestions on what to do with the empty lot and how to protect the water credits. Recently we extended the water credits until March 19, 2019. I would love to hear from more parishioners about the possibility of transforming/ building something on the property. The original purpose of purchasing the lot/house was to build up a bigger new church. All suggestions will be discussed by the parish and finance councils. We will present to the entire parish the results of our discussions and planning.
