Best Start Professional Development Part 1: Language to Literacy
This session will take a practical look at early childhood development including key information on
children’s language development and pre-literacy skills. Practical strategies that can be used to
enable parents and primary caregivers in their role; about how they can influence their child’s

Putting readers first – An introduction to the reader-centred approach: Rachel Van Riel leads
an insightful workshop exploring the principles and practice of reader development – promoting
books from the reader’s point of view; demonstrating how an understanding of consumer psychology
can help create successful library promotions; considering how a reader-centred approach can be
used both inside and outside the library and online; and outlining a range of low-cost and easy-toimplement ideas which can be instantly put into practice to offer added value to library readers.

Ideas and resources for creative community spaces: A hands-on exploration of two accessible
ideas for providing learning and creating opportunities in your library.
 Workshop 1 – Automata 1 Edibles – Participants use pasta, biscuits, skewers and lollies. You
can build things that twirl, jump, rock or slide, and let your imagination run free to make toys and
gadgets powered by your fingers.
 Workshop 2 – Blinking Badges – Participants learn the basics of working with Arduino to create
badges that light up and do awesome things based upon code.

One Q ANZAC 100 project will ask regional
audiences to express their feelings and ideas
around the First World War and war in general
on copies of First World War postcards from
the SLQ collection. In this hands-on activity,
participants design and wire up a custom
designed postcards incorporating LED lights,
as an opportunity to extend the postcard
project in your community.

Best Start Professional Development Part 2: Building Language & Literacy through your
service and community partnerships
This hands-on skills development session focuses on how to apply content covered in the Best Start
PD 1. In a fun and supportive environment, practice the skills and confidence required to engage in
effective communication with the primary caregivers and carers of 0-5 year old children about their
role in and the information and resources available to them. Practical ideas for language and literacy
contexts, such as sharing books and rhymes, including Baby Time and Story Time will be presented.
Outreach opportunities connecting to local organisations in the promotion of clear and consistent
communication and literacy messages to parents and primary caregivers will also be addressed.
Resources, examples and handouts will all be available for staff to take away and apply to their own
context.
