The Initiative on Islam and Medicine (II&M) produces
path-breaking scholarship that impacts the lives and
experiences of Muslim patients, healthcare providers
and religious leaders, with a primary focus on the
American context using an innovative approach that
convenes and draws insights from a diverse set of disciplinary experts from across the theological, social, and
human sciences.
The overarching goals of the II&M are to:
1) Provide intellectual resources to assist Muslim patients, clinicians, chaplains and Imams engage faithfully with modern medicine. The II&M utilizes a unique
approach that both describes the discursive and methodological gaps in Islamic ethico-legal judgments and
works together with Islamic scholars to establish theologically-rooted normative goals for Islamic bioethics.
2) Improve the health of American Muslims by assessing how American Muslim patients’ health behaviors and healthcare experiences are shaped by their
faith, and mobilizing that knowledge towards the development of evidence-based and culturally-tailored
health interventions and policies.
