Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley
National Police Chief’s Council lead for counter terrorism
Mark is Assistant Commissioner for Central Operations in the
Metropolitan Police Service, where he heads the Specialist Crime and
Operations which delivers uniform and detective services in relation to all
serious crime in London. He serves as the National Policing Lead for
Counter Terrorism, and chairs NPCC’s counter-terrorism coordination
committee, which has responsibility for devising and driving national Counter Terrorism (CT) and
Domestic Extremism (DE) strategic policy through the UK National Counter Terrorism Policing
Headquarters (NCTP HQ).
After graduating from St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge University, in 1983, Mark began his policing
career in 1987 with West Midlands Police. Following a transfer to Surrey, Mark served as Assistant
Chief Constable of Surrey Police from 2003, and then Chief Constable of Surrey Police from 2009 to
2011 before joining the Met. Mark was awarded the Queen’s Police Medal in the 2011 New Year
Honours.
