Response to Police Widows Pensions (EDM 828) campaign - March 2015
Thank you for contacting me about police widows pensions.
We have the finest police officers in the world who do a fantastic job serving local communities,
tackling crime, keeping people safe and I would like to take this opportunity to express my thanks for
the important and often dangerous work that they do.
I am sure you will be encouraged to hear that in the recent Budget, the Chancellor announced that
the Government will ensure that all widows, widowers and civil partners of police officers and
firefighters who are killed on duty will no longer lose their survivor benefits if they remarry, cohabit,
or form a civil partnership. It is my understanding that the Home Office and Department for
Communities and Local Government will set out further details in due course.
