Sun Health Community Education offers health talks and fitness classes
in May at Sun Health and various West Valley locations
SURPRISE, AZ – (April 29, 2015) The Sun Health Community Education Series presents ongoing health and
wellness programs on a variety of health care, healthy living and personal safety topics focused on seniors.
Events occur several times each month at locations across the West Valley and are presented as a community
service.
Classes are free unless a registration fee is indicated. To register for classes, please call 623-455-5633, unless
otherwise noted. Walk-ins cannot be accommodated. Registered participants are asked to call to cancel at least
two business days in advance if they cannot make a session.
Exercising with Osteoporosis – Monday, May 4 and Wednesday, May 20
Osteoporosis can affect both women and men. Come learn more about osteoporosis and how exercise is an
effective tool to prevent and slow the progression of this disease. Registration is required. Walk-ins cannot be

Advancement in Spine Therapies for an Active Population - Monday, May 4; 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
Dr. Tammy Penhollow, from The CORE Institute, will discuss technological advances in spinal cord stimulation

Medicare in 2015 & Social Security Retirement Benefit Planning - Monday, May 4; 1 to 3 p.m.
Attendees will learn about the basics of all Medicare Programs (Part A, B, C, and D, and Medigap Supplements),
services provided and costs of each part of Medicare and what’s new in 2015. Changes to Medicare as a result of
the Affordable Care Act will also be discussed. Social Security benefit planning will also be covered including
filing options, online tools, calculators and other benefits for family members. Additional resources for assistance

Taxpayer Advocate Services – Tuesday, May 5; 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
The Taxpayer Advocate Service helps protect taxpayers’ rights by ensuring that all taxpayers are treated fairly and
understand their rights under the Taxpayer Bill of Rights. Come learn how this service can help individuals,
businesses, and exempt organizations resolve problems with the Internal Revenue Service. The Taxpayer
Advocate Service is an independent organization within the IRS, led by the National Taxpayer Advocate, Nina

Weigh to Go! Weight Loss 12-Week Series – Starts Thursday, May 7; 8:30 to 10 a.m.
Research shows that nearly two out of three American adults are overweight or obese. This leads to increased risk
for high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke, and other chronic diseases. However, even a 5
to 10 percent decrease in weight can reduce those risks and improve health. This 12-week series is designed to
help individuals safely lose weight through healthy eating, becoming active and using tools designed for

Balance and Strength Training Program Eight-Week Series – Starting Friday, May 8; 3 to 4 p.m.
This eight- week series will emphasize balance exercises along with leg and core strength training in a group
setting. Pre and post- assessments will be done on the Biodex Balance System™ SD. Home exercises will also be
provided. Participants must be able to stand independently and be able to safely get up and down from the floor
without assistance. In addition, they must be able to walk around the block without the use of a cane or walker
and have no lower extremity injury or surgery in the past six months. Please call (623) 832-WELL (9355) to

Nutrition for Strong Bones: Osteoporosis Prevention & Treatment – multiple dates, locations

Unlocking the Mysteries of the Food Label – Thursday, May 14; 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Label reading is a skill that allows individuals to make excellent dietary choices that can play a role in disease
prevention and management. Join us as we discuss how to use general nutrition targets together with nutrition

Avoiding Arguments – Tuesday, May 19; 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
This class reviews changes in communication as dementia progresses and the common mistakes that caregivers
make leading to arguments. A variety of alternative strategies are introduced and practiced during the class so that
caregivers can walk away with new techniques to immediately put into place. Registration is required. Walk-ins

AARP Fraud Watch Network – Thursday, May 21; 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
Learn how to stay one step ahead of the fraudsters. The senior population seems to be the most vulnerable to
identity theft, scams and fraud. Presenter Linda Vitale will educate attendees on how to prevent becoming a
