Serra International began in Seattle in 1935. Currently, there are over 19,000 members in 36 countries. In the United States there are over 300 clubs, and in our diocese we have one in Stockton and one in Modesto. The clubs are named after the soon to be canonized Padre Junipero Serra who died in 1784. The primary mission of Serra is to encourage and support vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life. The club hopes to educate its members and the Catholic community to affirm the priesthood and vowed religious life as positive and necessary lifestyles in our Church. Recently, on the feast of St. Patrick, members of the Stockton Club visited St. Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park for evening Mass and celebration with the students. Our diocese currently has 6 seminarians at different levels of formation. Deacon Cesar Martinez in 4th theology will be ordained a priest for ministry in our diocese on June 6th at the Cathedral of the Annunciation at 10am. All are welcome to attend. Niños: ¿Quién ha obrado como pastor en mi vida con su ejemplo? STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS “I am the good shepherd...and I lay down my life for the sheep…and they will heed my voice.” - John 10:14-16 When you pray, do you only ask Jesus for things that you want? Do you ever ask Jesus what He wants you to do? How do you listen for the response? The answer is usually in “quiet whispers.” Take time in silent, daily prayer to hear His voice. Monsignor’s Corner The recent announcement that Pope Francis will canonize Blessed Junipero Serra during his US visit has invited some comments, favorable and unfavorable. Fr. James Martin, S.J. offers the following in the 2/23/15 edition of AMERICA magazine: Father Serra was an indefatigable missionary, but also stands accused of approving some of the excesses of Spanish colonialism. • The saints did not lead perfect lives; they were human beings who sinned. • Canonization does not mean that the Church is declaring that a person was perfect. • Shall we evaluate yesterday’s actions using today’s moral calculus? Perhaps the more helpful question is: What do we want to praise and emulate, as well as avoid and condemn, when we meditate on the lives of canonized men and women? Blessed/Saint Junipero Serra, pray for us. Msgr. Larry FLOWER DONATIONS It is that time again to register new and returning children for Religious Education for the 2015-2016 school year.
