This celebration was the result of students “voting” between two possible rewards for demonstrating positive behavior in our common areas (e.g., hallways, playgrounds, etc.). During the two weeks prior, all Lyon staff members were distributing smiley face stickers to any students or classes exemplifying our expectations, and students could then cast their votes with any stickers earned. Two posters displayed the results as they came in, and the excitement continued to build with the kids. You should have seen the smiles on the kids’ faces that Friday afternoon! This effort was an example of strategies we have implemented throughout this school year in support of our School Improvement Plan at Lyon. One of our goals is focused on making the environment of our school (physical, social, emotional, and behavioral) as safe, welcoming, and conducive to learning as possible. While we know Lyon is not lacking in these areas, the specific goal has caused us to be much more intentional with our work to create a positive learning environment for everyone. This work will continue during the 2015-‐16 school year. In the spirit of Finishing Strong (a theme I like to talk about every year at this time), we will repeat the voting process with our students one more time before the end of the year. This will help everyone maintain their focus on positive behaviors at school, as well as celebrate hard work and success together. At home, you can also encourage Finishing Strong through a continued or renewed commitment to positive routines related to homework completion and reading, schedule planning, healthy diet, adequate sleep, and prompt arrival to school each day. In other words, the “push” toward the end of this school year does not need to be anything intense, just a reinvigorated focus. We appreciate your support and partnership. We are both humbled and thankful to work in such a sincere and supportive community. During the past several weeks, parents have asked me how they can encourage their child to open up and converse in greater detail about their school day. As one dad put it, when I ask my son how his day, I get “Ok”. How can I encourage my 5th grader to tell more? Below is an article with some helpful conversation starters that my wife and I used when our children were school-‐age. I hope you find them helpful and that your child shares more about the events of the day. 13 (Better) Questions to Ask Your Child About School By Bob Cunningham, Contributing Writer When your child comes home on the first few days of school—or throughout the school year—
there will be lots of information you want from him or her. Here are some important things to keep in mind when you’re talking to your child about school. •
•
•
•
•
The way you ask the questions matters. If you give your child the opportunity to answer with one word (yes, no, a name), then you’re likely to get a one-‐word response. Try to ask open-‐
ended questions to keep a conversation going. Often kids are not specific, so you have to ask for specific information when you want it. Starting with factual questions is a great way to ease into conversation. Avoiding emotion-‐packed words (fun, happy, sad, mean) will allow the conversation to go on longer. Asking positive questions will give your child a chance to express concerns. Negative questions will stop a conversation. Try These Instead • What’s the biggest difference between this year and last year? • What was the best thing you did at school? • Tell me the names of the four kids who sat closest to you. • What was the most interesting thing your teacher said today? • What class rules did your teacher say are important? • What did your teacher say she likes to do? • What is the best thing about your daily schedule? • Was there anything you wish you had at school that you didn’t have today? • Who did you enjoy talking with the most? • Did anyone have anything fun or interesting to talk about? • Which days look best on your schedule? • Tell me two kids you remember from each class. • What was the best thing your teacher asked you to do in ____ today? The most likely times for your child to experience negative social interactions at school are the less structured times, such as recess, lunch and during transitions from activity to activity or room to room. Asking questions specifically about these times will give you the best read on social circumstances. Avoid These Questions Try These Instead • Did you play with anyone at recess? • What were most kids doing at recess? • What was the best game at recess? • What did you talk about at recess? • How was lunch? • Who sat near you at lunch? • What were the other kids eating for lunch? • What was the funniest thing someone said at lunch? • Did you get your locker? • Where is your locker? • Who has a locker near yours? I have been amazed numerous times throughout the year at the outpouring of support and resources that our parent community offers back to our schools. Every PTA event thus far has been well planned, executed and received, all thanks to the amazing leadership of our PTA chairs. Hundreds of parent volunteers have dedicated so much time and effort towards various events this year. We have truly accomplished many great things – thanks to all of you! Many thanks go out to Shari Isaacs and Dana Palmer and over 75 parent volunteers for an amazing Staff Appreciation week. Shari and Dana worked so hard to make this a special week for every person that works at our schools. The staff thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated all the kindness they received during the week. Also, big thanks to Jamie Stevens, Gail Weiss and Laura Lentz for a fun Earth Week! The children had a great opportunity to learn about taking care of the environment, exploring an electric car up close and celebrating the week with a Bike/Walk to school day. Lastly, thank you to Marianne Albovias for coordinating the school supply lists this spring and continuing the opportunity for families to purchase school supplies online. The deadline to order is today, May 8th. Thankfully, the fun is not over yet, here is what to watch for this month: *May 19th at 9:15 am at Pleasant Ridge is our final PTA meeting of the year, followed by our year end luncheon. All are welcome, so please plan to join us to celebrate this tremendous school year! *May 20-21st is the Spring Book Fair and Literature Alive event at Pleasant Ridge. On the 21st, guest author Dan Gutman will be signing his books and the Poetry Café will feature poet Bill Buczinsky and his musical friends. *June 5th is the 5th grade picnic, themed “PR Palooza” If you are interested in becoming more involved in PTA and would like to know more about available board positions for next year, email Vice President Brandy Isaac at [email protected]. Governor Pat Quinn signed Erin’s Law in January 2013. Erin's Law is named after abuse survivor Erin Merryn, who is working to get all 50 states to pass legislation that mandates sexual abuse prevention education for public school children. The law's goal is similar to efforts surrounding anti-‐bullying, internet safety, and drug prevention. The website for Erin's Law states that without proper education, most children will be repeatedly abused for years because often the only message they receive comes from their abuser who threatens them into silence. The new law's mission is to "shatter the silence and stigma around sexual abuse and educate children and empower them with their voice." In keeping with this state mandate, Lyon School will be teaching sexual abuse awareness in a sensitive and developmentally age appropriate manner. The lesson will be taught by our school social worker, Ms. Brown. We will educate students on safe touches and unsafe touches, safe secrets and unsafe secrets, and how to “get away and tell today.” We are happy to be able to offer this important and valuable learning opportunity to our students. If you do not wish to have your child participate, please send a note to the school office (to the attention of our Social Worker) or email the social worker ([email protected]) prior to Monday, May 18th, and we will arrange for alternate activities during the presentation. Prevent a brain Injury. Wear your helmet every time you ride. Be sure it fits properly.
Follow these easy steps to fit your helmet:
1. Measure your head. Size varies among helmets. Head size
may not match age listed on helmet.
2. Adjust helmet for a snug fit around your head. Some helmets
have an elastic adjustment. Others use an inner ring with
a dial or ratchet to create a snug fit. Some use sizing pads.
Follow instructions in the owner’s manual to get the most
comfortable, secure fit.
3. Position helmet so it is level on your head and no more
than 1 – 2 finger-widths above your eyebrows.
Tip: Look with your eyes every time you put on your helmet.
Be sure you can see the rim of the helmet.
4. Adjust straps. Be sure straps are flat, not twisted. If side
straps are adjustable, adjust the straps to form a “V” shape
just under your ears. If available, lock slider into place.
5. Buckle chin strap until it is snug.
Tip: Check that no more than 1 or 2 fingers fit between
the strap and neck.
Final Check: Make sure helmet does not rock side to side
or back and forth when shaking your head.
Straps get loose over time. Double check the fit of your
helmet before every ride.
Replace helmets that do not fit or have been in a crash.
Remember: One crash and it’s trash!
When you buy a helmet, be sure it meets safety standards.
Look for a certification label on the helmet by the
Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), ASTM,
Snell or ANSI.

Bicycles made possible through grant funding from the GEF
Dear First and Second Grade Parents,
We are looking forward to all our first and second grade students participating in a Bicycle Training
and Safety Unit during their Physical Education classes. This unit is scheduled to start on Wednesday,
May 20th.
For safety purposes, all students will be required to wear a helmet. Students should bring their own
helmet from home. We will have a very limited amount of helmets available to borrow at school. For
those in need of a new helmet you may purchase one through the Children’s Health Resource Center
as well as a local store in the area. Please refer to the handouts located in this newsletter as well as the
Lyon PE Website regarding the purchase of a new helmet and the proper way to fit your bike helmet.
Copies are also available in the Lyon School Office.
We are in need of parent volunteers to help with small groups of 5-10 students during the unit. Please
sign up on the VolunteerSpot Link located on the PTA website. All parents who are riding with a
group will need to have their own helmet and bicycle.
Please feel free to contact us in the Lyon PE Office with any further questions.

***The Pleasant Ridge gym will be the setting for a wide array of wonderful
books from Anderson’s Bookfair. This is a great opportunity to support our
schools by stocking up on summer reading materials, including PR author
Dan Gutman’s books!
***All Lyon and Pleasant Ridge families are encouraged to attend the public
hours of the Bookfair. Also, Pleasant Ridge students will have the
opportunity to preview books and shop briefly with their classrooms during
school hours on May 20 and May 21.
***Dr. Jones is holding a friendly competition at Pleasant Ridge to see which
grade can donate the most new or gently used books to Bernie’s Book
Bank! Students can bring donations to school in the gym or at the Book
Fair.

began writing, show many of his initial rejection letters, detail the process
he uses when writing books, and answer student questions. During
Literature Alive! he will autograph books purchased at the PTA Book Fair.
***A Child’s Voice Bill Buczinsky’s Poetry Café: Located in the Pleasant Ridge

from the library book cart.
