What kinds of phones are the subject of this update? Theterm“wirelessphone”refersheretohandheldwirelessphoneswith built-inantennas,oftencalled“cell”,“mobile”,or“PCS”phones.These typesofwirelessphonescanexposetheusertomeasurableRadio Frequency(RF)energybecauseoftheshortdistancebetweenthephone andtheuser’shead. TheseRFexposuresarelimitedbyFCCsafetyguidelinesthatwere developedwiththeadviceoftheFDAandotherfederalhealthandsafety agencies.Whenthephoneislocatedatgreaterdistancesfromtheuser, theexposuretoRFisdrasticallylowerbecauseaperson'sRFexposure decreasesrapidlywithincreasingdistancefromthesource.Theso-called “cordlessphones,”whichhaveabaseunitconnectedtothetelephone wiringinahouse,typicallyoperateatfarlowerpowerlevels,andthus produceRFexposuresfarbelowtheFCCsafetylimits. 4. What are the results of the research done already? Theresearchdonethusfarhasproducedconflictingresults,andmany studieshavesufferedfromflawsintheirresearchmethods.Animal experimentsinvestigatingtheeffectsofRadioFrequency(RF)energy exposurescharacteristicofwirelessphoneshaveyieldedconflicting 103 104 Safety resultsthatoftencannotberepeatedinotherlaboratories.Afewanimal studies,however,havesuggestedthatlowlevelsofRFcouldaccelerate thedevelopmentofcancerinlaboratoryanimals.However,manyofthe studiesthatshowedincreasedtumordevelopmentusedanimalsthathad beengeneticallyengineeredortreatedwithcancercausingchemicalsso astobepre-disposedtodevelopcancerintheabsenceofRFexposure.
