YOUTH GROUP
MONTREAT TRIP
First of all, I want to say how grateful I am to each of
you for your support of our Youth Program. As you
know, we raise money each year to take our High
School group to Montreat. It is a Presbyterian Youth
conference. The week at Montreat means so much
to our kids. It is life changing for the Youth. You can
speak with any of them and they can tell you how
much this week means to them. It is a great way to
grow closer as a group and spend time in
community with other Youth and Leaders. I have
always said God lives in Heaven but spends his
Summers in Montreat, North Carolina. We truly feel
God there with us.
In years past, we have always raised enough money
to cover all of our expenses. This year we have
raised $3,883.66. Unfortunately, we still need an
additional $700. This covers our conference fee,
housing, food for the week, and a van to get us
there. We could really use your help. If anyone could
contribute any additional support to us, it would be
greatly appreciated. We also would appreciate
prayers.

It is a privilege to be the Youth Director at
Providence Presbyterian. Our Youth show me God's
love every time I am with them. So do all of you with
kindness and support of me and our program.
Thank you so much for your continued support of
our Youth. I can't put into words what it means to
me, them, and their families.
Thank you,
Garrett

From Cherokee Presbytery
From our Neighboring Presbyteries
School of the Laity is a wonderful program run by Savannnah
Presbytery to provide theological and practical education for members
of Presbyterian Churches. This year, they are opening the
program up to people from other Presbyteries. This is a tremendous
opportunity to learn about your faith, develop practical skills for ministry
and make new friends... all in a wonderful setting! Click here for
information and registration.
From the PCUSA
The Belhar Confession has been approved by the required 2/3 of
Presbyteries, and is now going back to the General Assembly meeting
next June in Portland for final ratification by the Assembly. If you'd like
to know more about this confession, click here.
All of the amendments proposed by the 221st Assembly have now
been approved by the Presbyteries. For details, you can check it
out here.
Did you know that our Worship Directory is undergoing some
revisions? And your input is requested!
In 2006, the 217th General Assembly of the PC(USA) asked the Office
of Theology and Worship to work with the Office of the General
Assembly in developing a revision of the Directory for Worship that
would be "authentically Reformed," "culturally appropriate," "more
accessible and helpful," "shorter and better organized." A staff team
worked in consultation with a diverse group of pastors, professors, and
mid-council leaders to develop a draft to send to the 220th General
Assembly (2014). The General Assembly voted to send the draft
revision to the church for a year-long period of study and comment,
ending July 1, 2015. (from PCUSA website)
Camp Registration is underway and the slots are filling up!
Go here to get information and registration forms.
Mission Mobilization Event - August 15th: Come see what the
churches of Cherokee Presbytery are doing to serve their
communities! You will have an opportunity to hear from
LaFayette about their prison ministry, from Woodstock about their
ministry with a local senior living community, from John
Knox about their Christian After School Academy,
from Grace about their health and wellness clinic, from Marietta
First about their Adoption and Foster Family ministry,
From Cohutta about their new work with Twelve Step Programs.
All this AND Ken McKenzie's Disaster Preparedness workshops, a
workshop with Family Promise, and a keynote address by Larry
Martin from International Justice Ministry. Registration forms will
be available soon!
The Presbytery recently approved Kirkwood Presbyterian
Church's request to purchase a house on an adjacent property.
The property (known as the Purdy House) has been purchased
and the congregation is working with Family Promise to provide
transitional housing (affordable housing) for graduates of the
Family Promise Program. It is estimated that the families will
stay in the house anywhere from 3-6 months while they save
money to move to a permanent residence. Thus far, over 89
volunteers Kirkwood, Family Promise and Home Depot have
participated in the work of renovating the property. Home Depot
is donating all the materials, which Pastor Catherine Renken
estimates are valued in the $10,000 range. Check out the
progress:
Our upcoming Presbytery Meeting will be held on May 19th at Cohutta
Presbyterian Church. We were invited by the congregation to help them celebrate
the 100th anniversary of their ministry in the current facility. (Though the
congregation dates back to 1848). Registration and supper begin at 4:30 and the
meeting will start at 5:45 pm. Come and join us as we worship, deliberate and
celebrate together.
Dalton Pres. is continuing to work on their new sanctuary in downtown Dalton. As
you can see in the photo, the brickwork is now being applied. Looks like they will
certainly be ready for us when we come for the November Presbytery meeting!
