Best of Class!
Congratulations to Dave Soball for winning Best
of Class in Class 7 at the 2011 Olds National Meet in Reno, NV. In
addition, Dave was awarded the Post War REO Award. A double
winner! This must have made the trip from Canada worthwhile.
Other chapter members winning awards were Don Wahlstrom,
Senior Preservation; Bob Gaunt, Hard Luck Award for the carburetor
fire that caused enough damage that Bob had to rent a truck and trailer
and return home from Bend, OR. He never made it to the Nationals.
The only other mishap experienced was the tire tread peeling from a
trailer tire destroying the inner fender of your editor’s trailer west of
Susanville, CA.
The 2011 National Meet had the fewest number of cars attending in
recent years. Evidently the higher fuel costs and the fact the many
OCA members do not like to cross the Rocky Mountains from the east
to get to the West Coast. 25 percent of the cars on the show field were
Modifed and Street Stock, the largest showing in years.

It’s August already. As you may have heard we
had a small showing at the Pacific NW Zone Car
Show. It was pouring down rain early in the
morning and a small group of us gathered under
the tent trying to decide if we needed to cancel or
not. But then a few cars started to show up so we
voted to have the show despite the rain. Ended up
with 19 cars on the field most of them OCA
members including one member from Canada.
The sun came out in the afternoon and the rest of
the day was pleasant. I would like to thank Ed and
Kathi Straw for all of their hard work preparing for
the show and to all the volunteers who helped set
up and stuck around to clean up after the show;
you all did a great job. I assume the rain kept
most people away but for those of us who did
show up we had a good time.
By the time you read this several club members will
be on the road to the Nationals, in Reno. I wish I was
with them but work once again interfered with fun. I
wish the travelers a safe and fun trip. Hope they take a
lot of pictures to share with those of us who cannot
attend.
There will be no August meeting. Our next
meeting will be on Sept. 11. The meeting place will be
posted in the September newsletter.
See you there
Regards,

“BETWEEN THE BUMPERS” … By Ed Konsmo
2011 Oldsmobile National Meet update…
Another National Meet is in the history books. Everyone who traveled to Reno agreed that
the venue at the Grand Sierra Resort was one of the best in years. It was great to have all of
the participants in the same hotel. The weather was “picture perfect” though too hot for some
during the day. The last two nights of the meet a storm with the threat of high winds and hail
caused those with trailers to get their cars inside and those without trailers quickly assembled
their cars under the hotel porticos for protection. The hail never materialized. However, the
winds blew over the tents and totaled several canopies in the swap meet.
Traveling to Reno for the National Meet was adventuresome for several chapter members.
Bob Gaunt did not complete the journey because of a carb fire that caused substantial
damage. Bob had to rent a truck and trailer to get the “Phantom” back home. Your editor
had tire on the trailer lose its tread and destroy the inner fender liner. No damage to the car in
the trailer. Ron Haave had an alternator go bad on judging day and had the car towed off the
show field before it could be judged. Ron had to leave the car for repair, fly back home and
then fly back to pick up the car.
This was the first year that the newly revised judging sheets were used. As of this writing, no
complaints about the judging process have been received. That may change when the
members receive their judging sheets. Again, the Judging Clinic was a great success with an
overflow crowd of 90 in the room. We will continue to hold the clinic at all future National
Meets.
The 2012 National Meet will be in Des Moines, IA hosted by the Iowa Olds Club. For the
first time it will be held indoors at a convention center. The Illinois Valley Olds Club along
with the Archway Olds Chapter placed their bid for the 2013 National Meet. Their bid was
accepted and the meet will take place in Springfield, IL where the 1998 meet was held. The
Holiday Inn and Suites will be the host hotel. The Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky
Chapter presented a plan to host the 2014 National Meet in Cincinnati, OH. They were the
hosts for the 2003 meet. Their proposal was also approved by the OCA Board of Directors.
We will share more information about the future National Meets as we receive it.
