Dear Church Family,
The summer of 2015 has started off with some big surprises! In the midst of our own summer vacations and a
fabulous and very successful Vacation Bible School, we have also heard that two of our long time staff
members are stepping down. Ann Graham, after 21 years of Ministry in Christian Education, is retiring and Dr.
Jong Kim our Adult Music Director, after over a decade of music ministry to QMPC, has accepted a two year
position in Korea. As excited as we are for both Ann and J, it may raise questions about what lies ahead for
the church. God will be with them in their new endeavors as God will be with all of us! Knowing that, I feel
confident in sharing a brief outline of how we, as a church, will move forward.
Over a year ago, the Session of the church established a "Staffing Model Task Force" to study what other
churches our size are doing in terms of staffing. The current model we have been functioning (past several
years) under was established in an era where QMPC was much larger, both in size and financial support. This
past fall the Session appointed Bob Lockridge to be the Session member involved with this committee.
Michael Webb is the Chair of the Committee and Scott Robert and Elizabeth Schrader will remain on the
committee. Since the announcement of Ann's retirement, Lisa Cawthorne, Chair of Personnel has been added
to the committee. Together, they will begin the process of praying and discerning where God is calling us in
the staffing of our church.
The word I want to give everyone is patience. The process before us will take time; time to understand the
current needs of the church, time to understand where God is calling us, time to analyze current financial
support, time to take a deep breath and listen for the still small voice of God (1 Kings 19:12). In taking time, we
can also be thankful to God for the many blessings we have. So, patience in the journey!
If you have a question or would like to talk about any of these things, my door is open. If you prefer, ask a
current Session member. Everyone involved in this leadership transition is striving to be open and
transparent. Please pray for the wisdom and leadership of your fellow church members as they continue to
prayerfully discern God’s will for QMPC. They are doing a wonderful job of handling the transition well.
The Good News remains. God is faithful and we are called to be the body of Christ, his hands, his feet, his
eyes, his ears to share the gospel to a broken and sinful world. When we model Christ in a time of transition,
we glorify him and his kingdom come!
God is good, all the time.

Session Highlights, May 2015
Bart opened the meeting with worship and Holy Communion in the Chancel before moving to the Moseley Chapel for the
business meeting.
The following requests were voted on and approved:
 A request from the Personnel Committee to approve 2 new QMPC documents:
1 - Travel Policy and Procedure
2 - Health Flexible Spending Arrangement
 Request from Scholarship committee to accept application requesting Weigand funds for post-graduate studies
 Voted and approved use of Session funds to purchase a 10-week study video and materials entitled ReFrame.
Session meetings will be extended by an hour beginning in June to watch the video and have time for discussion.

The Session met in the Moseley Chapel after worship on Sunday, June 21st.


The Property Committee requested monies to be used from the Property Fund to
1) replace the 30-year old heat pump in the Pastor's Study and
2) replace the feeder filter system that services the Fellowship Hall, kitchen, and lower classrooms. Both items
were voted on and approved. .
The new Staffing Model Committee will be accelerating their work towards developing a proposed model due to
Ann Graham's impending retirement. Session members are grateful for the 21 years that Ann has dedicated to
Quaker.

Dear Quaker friends,
Jane and I wish to express our heartfelt gratitude to you for the generosity you have shown us in the months since my
accident. During those first weeks in the hospital when it was dark and gloomy outside, our spirits were always lifted by the
arrival of a friendly face, some beautiful flowers, or the many, many cards of encouragement. When I returned home seven
weeks later to continue therapy here the days were incredibly full of activity and the arrival of nightly meals was a godsend.
Our spirits were and are warmed and strengthened by the knowledge of your prayers on our behalf. I continue to improve,
albeit slowly, and we were thrilled to be able to make the trip to Nashville to attend the wedding of Bill’s son Ryan to Ginger
Young. We will never forget the steadfast love we received from our church family and we will always hold you close to our
hearts. May God bless you all.

NOTES FROM THE DAY SCHOOL
Although the children are off from school for the summer, Miss Carrie is busy preparing for a new school year
beginning in September. We are looking forward to getting acquainted with some new students and parents,
and also to reconnecting with our returning children and their parents. As a Smart Beginnings provider, the
Day School is committed to preparing young children for school educationally, emotionally, and
socially in a pleasant, age appropriate environment, and we are pleased to have an exemplary four star
rating from Virginia’s Star Quality Initiative Program.
Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Day School offers a half-day preschool program for children ages 2 ½ and 3
to 5 years, and there are some spaces available in our Two-Day Class, Three-Day Class, and Five-Day
Class. Please contact the Day School Director, Carrie Lewis, at (434) 239-2548, (434) 316-2145, or
[email protected] for application particulars. If you are not a parent of a preschool child, please let your
friends and acquaintances who have young children know about us.
Another way that you can support the education of young children is by making a contribution to the Day
School’s scholarship fund. Named in memory of former Day School teacher Jean Kirby, the fund allows young
children in our community to benefit from attending preschool. There are some parents who struggle to afford
preschool tuition fees, and a contribution of any amount will be appreciated. Also, this can be a fantastic way to
honor your own children, your parents, or a special teacher. If you contact the Day School Director with the
applicable details, the preschool can let that person know that a contribution was made in his or her honor.
Preparations are underway for another fun school year, and we hope that your children can be a part of our
caring, creative preschool community. It is always fulfilling to see the children “bloom” and grow as the school
year unfolds!
