Dear Ms McGovern,
As Director General for the Office for National Statistics, I have been asked to reply to your recent question
asking the Minister for the Cabinet Office how many people died of Parkinson’s disease in England in each
of the last five years. [228779]
Table 1 provides the number of deaths where the underlying cause of death was Parkinson’s disease in
England registered between 2009 and 2013 (the latest year available).
Deaths are coded to specific diseases using the International Classification of Disease. In 2011 ONS moved
to version 2010 of the Tenth Edition (ICD10) of this classification. Each update aims to better classify
deaths. Following this move, some deaths that were coded to Parkinson’s disease under the previous
classification are now coded to pneumonia, organism unspecified. Therefore data for 2009 and 2010 are not
directly comparable to data from 2011 onwards.
More information about the effects of the change from version 2001 ICD10 to version 2010 ICD10 can be
found in the following bridge coding study: http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/rel/subnational-health3/results-of-theicd-10-v2010-bridge-coding-study--england-and-wales--2009/2009/statistical-bulletin--results-of-the-bridgecoding-study.pdf
Yours sincerely,
Glen Watson
Director General for ONS

1 Parkinson’s disease was the underlying cause of death defined using the International Classification of
Disease the tenth revision (ICD 10) code G20.
2 Figures are based on deaths registered rather than deaths occurring in a calendar year. Further
information on registration delays for a range of causes can be found on the ONS website:

3 Figures registered before and after the introduction of the International Classification of Disease tenth
revision Version 2010 in 2011 are not comparable. More information about this can be found usingthe link
