(228823) The Office for National Statistics (ONS) compiles estimates of the number of people who were unemployed following International Labour Market (ILO) definitions from the Annual Population Survey (APS). People interviewed for the APS may classify themselves as having learning difficulties in response to questions about health problems. Unfortunately, reliable estimates of the number of unemployed people with learning difficulties in Streatham parliamentary constituency and the London borough of Lambeth are not available due to small sample sizes. Table 1 shows the number of unemployed people in the UK with learning difficulties, according to survey responses from the APS, for the 12 month period ending December 2014, the latest available period, along with APS estimates for the 12 month periods ending in December for 2010 to 2013. As with any sample survey, estimates from the APS are subject to a certain level of uncertainty. A guide to the quality of the estimates of the levels is included on the table. National and local area estimates for many labour market statistics, including employment, unemployment and claimant count are available on the NOMIS website at http://www.nomisweb.co.uk. Yours sincerely, Glen Watson Director General for ONS Table 1: Number of unemployed people with learning difficulties United Kingdom, Thousands 12 months ending: December 2010 December 2011 December 2012 December 2013 December 20141 44 52 53 49 42 ** Source: Annual Population Survey 1. Coefficients of Variation have been calculated as an indication of the quality of the estimates. See Guide to Quality below. Guide to Quality: The Coefficient of Variation (CV) indicates the quality of an estimate, the smaller the CV value the higher the quality. The true value is likely to lie within +/- twice the CV - for example, for an estimate of 200 with a CV of 5% we would expect the population total to be within the range 180-220. *** Coefficient of Variation (CV) ( %) 0 ≤ CV < 5 5 ≤ CV < 10 10 ≤ CV < 20 **** CV ≥ 20 KEY * ** Statistical Robustness Estimates are considered precise. Estimates are considered reasonably precise. Estimates are considered acceptable. Estimates should be used with caution and, in some cases, may be unreliable for practical purposes.
