UX20036 Drive the rigid vehicle on private roads in a safe and fuel efficient manner This standard is about the safe and fuel efficient driving of a goods rigid vehicle on the private road. It covers the appropriate use of rigid vehicle controls to maximise safety and fuel efficiency. It covers knowledge of the factors that maximise fuel efficiency and the safety of other road users. UX20036_v2 NOS 2SfL5b Level 2 Credit value 4 GLH 20 Observations (minimum) 2 External paper(s) 0 Drive the rigid vehicle on private roads in a safe and fuel efficient manner Learning outcomes On completion of this unit you will: 1. Be able to drive the rigid vehicle on private roads in a safe and fuel efficient manner 2. Know how to drive the rigid vehicle on private roads in a fuel efficient manner Evidence requirements 1. This unit must be assessed in the workplace, in a realistic working environment and/or in a formal learning environment. 2. You will be assessed over a reasonable period of time using a variety of assessment methods. 3. Competent performance must be demonstrated to your assessor on at least two occasions. 4. Whilst a range of evidence types can be presented for assessment against each assessment criterion, observation of real work activities should be a prime source of evidence. 5. There is no external paper requirement for this unit. UX20036 3 Achieving observations and developing knowledge Achieving observation outcomes Your assessor will observe your performance of practical tasks and will sign-off an outcome as complete when all assessment criteria have been competently achieved. Criteria may not always naturally occur during a practical observation. In such instances you will be asked questions to demonstrate your competence in this area. Your assessor will document the criteria that have been achieved through oral questioning. Competent performance must be demonstrated to the assessor on at least two occasions. Achieving knowledge outcomes You will be guided by your tutor and assessor on the evidence that needs to be produced. Your knowledge and understanding will be assessed using the assessment methods listed below: • • • • • • • • Observed work Witness statements Audio-visual media Evidence of prior learning or attainment Written questions Oral questions Assignments Case studies Where possible your assessor will integrate knowledge outcomes into practical observations through oral questioning. The knowledge and understanding evidence produced must relate to your workplace. 4 UX20036 Observations Outcome 1 Be able to drive the rigid vehicle on private roads in a safe and fuel efficient manner c. Demonstrate how to drive the rigid vehicle You can: a. Follow organisational policies and procedures, in relation to driving the rigid vehicle and load, in a fuel efficient manner, that relate to: • health, safety and security • legal requirements • operating requirements b. Position the rigid vehicle and apply lane discipline to maintain the safety of yourself and other road users according to the prevailing driving conditions Observation 1 safely and in a fuel efficient manner to include: • giving clear signals in good time • driving at the appropriate speed for the driving conditions • minimising fuel consumption and wear and tear • applying the braking systems, in a controlled manner, appropriate to the driving conditions, distance available, the rigid vehicle and its load • overtaking other vehicles at a suitable point • take preventative action to avoid harm to any other road user 2 Optional Date achieved Criteria questioned orally Portfolio reference Assessor initials Learner signature UX20036 5 Knowledge Outcome 2 Know how to drive the rigid vehicle on private roads in a fuel efficient manner You can: a. Explain organisational policies and procedures, in relation to driving the rigid vehicle and load, in a fuel efficient manner, that relate to: • health, safety and security • legal requirements • operating requirements b. Explain the organisation’s policy when driving conditions vary and result in changes to the schedule c. Describe how to adapt driving styles to changes in driving conditions d. Explain how to adapt driving manner to suit changes in driving conditions e. Explain how the actions of other road users can affect driving manner f. Explain how to: • position the rigid vehicle on the road to ensure the safety of yourself and other road users • appropriately use signals • alter speed to meet different types of road conditions and requirements • use the controls of the rigid vehicle to optimise fuel consumption • assess and maintain safe separation distances • assess factors affecting safe stopping distances • use the controls of the rigid vehicle to adjust braking under different road conditions g. Identify types of hazard that could occur on the road 6 UX20036 Portfolio reference Outcome 2 (continued) Know how to drive the rigid vehicle on private roads in a fuel efficient manner You can: Portfolio reference h. When overtaking, identify: • • • when overtaking should and should not occur the types of hazards involved factors affecting the distance required to overtake other vehicles i. Describe the effects severe braking could have on the load and roadworthiness of the rigid vehicle j. Identify problems that can occur when driving the vehicle, on private roads, in a safe and fuel efficient manner k. Explain the appropriate action to take, in order to deal with identified problems UX20036 7
