California Transplant Rose Hata Blooms at QMC
ROSE HATA, APRN, Patient Care Consult-
ing Services, is the QMC Honolulu April
Employee of the Month. Her accolades
are many and her dedication toward putting patients first is paramount.
“Rose was the first ever Clinical Nurse
Specialist for the QMC Surgical ICU,” endorsed Director Mimi Harris, RN. “She
has become an invaluable resource to
individuals, groups, institutions, and most
importantly, patients and families. While
her CV is impressive, it is in the day to day
moments and interactions…that Rose’s
true impact is realized. I could not ask for
a more dedicated, compassionate, skilled,
creative, open, objective, fun individual to
be privileged to work with.” Mimi went on
to say that Rose not only has the vision
and passion that has moved us towards
the successful development and expansion of many significant clinical programs
and improvements, but she also humbly
takes responsibility for the mundane realities that accompany such responsibilities.
Rose makes the journey…joyous, Mimi
continued. “She’s the quintessential ambassador of nursing excellence, patient
safety and advocacy, and…has won over
even the most skeptical of hearts.”
Rose is a California transplant who
came in 2009 after hearing Queen’s was
the best hospital in Hawai‘i. She admits
that she started out as a call-in (in the
SICU) because she really wanted to be

sure before she made the commitment to
a full-time position. “But when I saw the
great physician and nursing leadership,
I realized this was a long-term place for
me,” Rose explained. “I really appreciate
the focus on patients first and I truly felt it
from day one. I love working in the SICU
and am so proud and happy to be a part
of such a great team.”
Her nominations were many. Mimi says
she has a folder full of emails, notes from
staff, physicians, patients, and families
singing her praises. Here are just a few:
“Rose is the heart, soul, and brain behind
CLABSI (Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infection) nursing prevention initiatives at QMC. She is highly knowledgeable on the subject, passionate about pre(Continued on Page 2)

Whew! But be assured, those were just

Rose was recently chosen for the national
nominating committee of the AACN, and
has always been a champion of bringing national recognition and the highest
standards of care to Hawai‘i’s nurses. She
is very proud to announce that the QMC
SICU has recently been given the AACN’s
Silver Beacon Award for Excellence. Rose
was instrumental in bringing the recognition to Queen’s. The award is called “a
significant milestone on the path to exceptional patient care and achieving a healthy

DAISY Blooms
in the Springtime
LET’S CELEBRATE SPRING with a round of
DAISY awards. In case you haven’t been
paying attention, DAISY is an acronym for
Diseases Attacking the Immune System.
The DAISY Foundation was formed in 1999
by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who died
at age 33 of complications of Idiopathic
Thrombocytopenic Purpura. The awards
were created to thank nurses for their extraordinary care to patients and their families. Queen’s is proud to be one of 1,900
health care facilities in 14 countries that are
committed to honoring their nurses with
the DAISY Award. Nurses may be nominated by patients, family members, and
coworkers. Here are some excerpts from
the nominations of this quarter’s winners.

Mona Briones
Michelle Sato, RN, QET 4 MICU
“Michelle was my husband’s nurse. She is
so kind and compassionate we were put
instantly at ease by her calm nature. She
saw us through to discharge so we spent a
lot of time with her and were so impressed
by her attention to detail and follow-up.
She made sure to update the [in-room
communication] board often during the
day and explained our plan and focus as
it changed throughout the day. She advocated for us and worked so hard to resolve
the acute issues he had on admission.”
Mona Briones, RN, QET 8 DH
“I recently observed nursing care at its finest. While rounding on patients, I recognized an atypical patient on QET 8 DH, a
man on oxygen in an agonal breathing pattern. Next to him sat a tiny elderly woman.
She began to weep and in hushed tones
of broken English, told how she and her
husband were all alone. Mona entered and
in Filipino asked how she was doing, if she
had all she needed. Mona assured her that
she would help. She realized there were
precious few hours left for this couple to
spend together and made them a priority.
Mona and her team made sure he
spent his final hours comfortably instead of
being moved to another unit when a bed
became available. He passed away before
his daughter could arrive from the Philippines, but Mona advocated for them so
that he could remain in the room until the
daughter arrived. She did not want this final

visit to be in the morgue. This type of endof-life emphatic care might be expected on
an oncology unit or in an ICU, rather than
on an ortho unit. It was so special to see
that it did seem to be the norm for Mona
and the staff on QET 8 DH to provide such
exceptional, personalized care.”
Josie Esmino, RN, Pauahi 2
“Nurse Josie Esmino treated me with
dignity and respect. She changed the
sheets three times during the night and
responded to our frequent calls with
patience, remaining cheerful the whole
time. I was most impressed by the caring
attitude of Josie and highly recommend
her for this well-deserved DAISY Award.”
Rodney Choy, RN, PACU (Now at
QMC-WO; awarded for work in Honolulu)
“During discharge after surgery I was
very uncomfortable, but impatient to be
released. Mr. Choy took it upon himself
to help me. He called my doctor and
handled my paperwork with compassion
and understanding about my physical
and mental condition. His actions were
outstanding. I have known many professionals at Queen’s, however, Mr. Choy
embodies the healer’s touch attitude that
you so diligently strive for. He is the best!”
DAISY Awards are given every quarter to QMC Honolulu nurses. Nomination forms are available on all nursing
units and on the Queen’s Intranet under Clinical>Nursing>New/Upcoming
Events. The DAISY Committee welcomes
volunteers who wish to help screen nominations. Email [email protected].
