Settlement For Some At Willets Point

A cooperative of auto shops that
long stood on the dusty peripherals of
Citi Field settled a lawsuit this month
that will facilitate their move, enmasse, to Hunts Point in the Bronx.
Their relocation will make way for a
$3 billion residential and commercial
development, which includes a controversial mega-mall.
However, the deal will not completely empty the area for developers.
Following years of conflict, a handful
of businesses remain left out of the
cooperative and the Hunts Point deal,
and, for some, on the street.
The Sunrise Cooperative consists
of about 45 members with shops
inside the footprint of the development’s first phase of construction,
according to Cooperative president
Marco Neira, although he said that
most have since moved to temporary locations, which he attributed
to evictions. In February, the Sunrise Cooperative sued the groups behind the project – the City Economic
Development Corporation and the
Queens Development Group, a joint
venture between Sterling Equities
and Related Companies – arguing
that the City approved the plan unlawfully.
Earlier this month, Sunrise settled
the lawsuit for $5.8 million to help
with rent and build-out at the planned
Bronx site, according to the City Economic Development Corporation.
The City will pay $4.8 million and
Queens Development Group will
provide $960,000 of those funds. The

Queens Pols Respond To NY State Budget

Fools day, the State passed its $142 billion final budget for 2015-2016.
Pillars of the new budget, the fifth
in the row to be on time, include education and ethics reforms. Per the Education Act of 2015, the budget includes
funding for new teacher recruitment
and evaluation methods, expanded
pre-Kindergarten and a $20,000 bonus
to top-performing teachers and a plan
for failing schools. The ethics reforms
require public officials to disclose all
outside earned income.
The budget also includes $275 million for rental assistance services for
New York City’s homeless, support
for four new Metro-North stations
in the Bronx, $1.3 billion to the New
York State Thruway system and a $1
billion capital investment in hospitals,
among many other items.
“This $142 billion budget is the
most meaningful that we have agreed
to in many years, not because of what
we are spending, but because of how
we are spending it,” Governor Andrew
Cuomo said in a statement released
Wednesday.
Some Queens elected officials heralded the measures in the budget as
well. Assemblyman David Weprin
(D-Fresh Meadows) called it “monumental” and the ethics reforms “historic.”
“Funding for our state’s education programs has continued to be a
top priority in this budget session,” he
added. “I am excited to report that the
total school aid budget was increased
by $1.6 billion to a record-high of
$23.5 billion.”
Several, however, criticized the
budget for what it left out.
State Sen. James Sanders (D-South
Ozone Park) noted that while the budget does not raise New York’s mini-
mum wage, it includes tax breaks on
luxury items.
“I’m trying to figure out how I’m
going to go to my hardworking community of taxpayers - middle class and
working class people - and explain to
them that we could not raise the minimum wage, but we can give taxpayer
money so that the rich can get a larger
plane or a larger yacht,” Sanders said.
“I tried to find the yacht owners
association in my district. I was unable to find that group. So, I looked to
see how many jet owners I had in my
district, but unfortunately I came up
short there also,” he continued.
Though he applauded library and
veteran funding, State Sen. Joseph
Addabbo (D-Howard Beach) said ethics and elements of education reform
measures do not go far enough.
“While there are many positive
items in our state budget, it can also
be spoken of in terms of lost opportunities,” he said.
Assemblyman Francisco Moya (DJackson Heights) said he was “deeply
disappointed” by the budget’s exclusion
of the DREAM Act, which would allow
eligible undocumented students to access State financial aid and scholarships
for college and called Republican opposition to the bill “short-sighted.” Moya
is the lead sponsor of the bill.
“We will continue to fight for the
DREAM Act in the post-budget session. Now that the Governor has
achieved the ethics and educational
reforms he was hoping for, we expect
him to focus on the DREAM Act,”
Moya said. “Our DREAMers can’t wait
another year, hoping elected leadership will summon the courage to put
people before politics.”
Cuomo will spend the remainder of
the session pushing for passage of his
2015 Opportunity Agenda, a comprehensive plan for the State economy,
education and justice system, among
others.

KAAGNY Ousts President Amid Controversy

The infighting developed after a new
challenger, Ms. Minsun Kim, paid a
$100,000 candidacy fee, with the intention of running against Min.
Sources close to Kim said the organization’s bylaws were allegedly changed
to ban campaigning before an official
candidacy announcement. The sources
added that the laws were retroactive, thus
disqualifying Kim. Also according to the
bylaws, 30 dues-paying members must
be in attendance in order to hold a quorum to elect new leadership. According to
sources, there were only 23 members in
attendance at the January meeting when
the election was due to occur, so Min continued to be president without a vote.
As a result, Kim hired attorney Jerry
Goldfeder to fight the case in court. In
response, members of the Former Presidents Advisory Committee of KAAGNY
announced they would be holding a
meeting on Tuesday night to vote on the
impeachment of President Min and the
current Board Chairman.
In an attempt to delay the impeach-
side authorities to support his indefensible actions at KAAGNY” Goldfeder said
in an email. “Ms. Kim will continue to
defend herself, the membership and the
integrity of Korean Americans.”

request to dismiss the impeachment
hearing and on Tuesday evening, the

however, was defiant.
“The meeting was illegal,” Min responded. “We have to go to court.”

decision “sophomoric.”

Audit: Build It Back Delayed Aid

An audit by New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer found that the
Build it Back program paid nearly $7
million for work that was flawed and
incomplete.
The audit, released on Tuesday,
details delays in the delivery of aid to
homeowners in areas affected by Hurricane Sandy that applied for help with
the city program.
Stringer’s audit examined the program from June 1, 2013 through Aug.
1, 2014, and also included testimonies
from residents during public hearings
held by Stringer’s office and a random
sample of 70 applicants.
The audit found that contractors
were paid up front, $6.8 million in total, for work that was not yet finished.

The Comptroller’s office said the
workers had little incentive to complete their work because of the upfront
payment.
Their audit also found that oversight was not in place to ensure that
contractors were only paid for work
they did. According to Stringer’ office,
the City’s Office of Housing Recovery
Operations paid $245,000 for 905 deliverables that had already been paid
for. HRO also paid $443,247 for consultant hours that should have been
submitted on a weekly basis, but were
submitted monthly instead.
It also found that applicants in the
program were often shuffled around
to different case managers handling
their situation, even though they were
promised that only one person would
be helping them once they applied to
Build it Back.
Their report, released April 17,
2014, included a number of changes
made including improving the experience of homeowners applying for aid
during the pre-construction process
and expanding the eligibility of reimbursement so that more homeowners
can get aid.

president, called the early stages of
Build it Back “a disaster,” and added
that any sort of oversight is always a
positive.

Bike Lanes Planned For Queens Blvd.

lost her son Asif to Queens’ notorious
“Boulevard of Death.” Asif was biking
home from work on Queens Boulevard
in Elmhurst, near the Queens Center
Mall, when he was fatally struck by a
truck. Since then, his mother has dedicated herself to street safety, advocating for street redesigns as part of the
group Families For Safe Streets.
She visited Community Board 2’s
Transportation Committee meeting
on Tuesday, where the DOT was presenting a draft proposal to put bike
lanes on Queens Boulevard, to advocate for the plan.
“I have been asking for a bike lane
for more than seven years, ever since
my son died,” she said. “It’s not going to bring my son back, I don’t hope
that, but I think that it will be a way
of my son giving to the community, to
the society. It will save other lives.”
The DOT’s project area – Queens
Boulevard from Roosevelt Avenue to
73rd Street – is the corridor’s most
deadly, according to planner Nichole
Altmix, who presented the proposal
to CB2 on Tuesday alongside Ryan
Russo and Acting Borough Commissioner Jeff Lynch. The bike lane and
other proposed changes were designed
based on feedback collected at a January public workshop.

Russo said on Tuesday that it is too
early to specify the exact cost of the
intermediary phase of the redesign,
but estimated it would run between $1
million and $2 million.
Board members and residents at
Tuesday’s meeting were receptive to
the draft proposal, with some hesitations and suggestions. Transportation Committee Chairman Joe Conley
pointed out a handful of spots where
he worried the stopped turns would
create congestion, and where long
crossings and crossing wait-times create impatient pedestrians and therefore dangerous conditions.
Conley also indicated skepticism
about the project goals as a whole,
noting, “our position has been, there’s
just some roads where bicycle lanes
don’t belong.”
CB2 will continue to provide feedback to the DOT and will meet the
agency again at its May Transportation meeting; the redesign plan will hit
the full board in June. The DOT hopes
to begin work on Queens Boulevard
this summer.

Borough-wide Transit Plan Needed
Honoring Vietnam Vets
It’s no secret that the borough’s transportation infrastructure is, at best, lacking,
at worst, grossly insufficient. Subways, buses and streets are congested even beyond
normal rush hours.
We are intrigued by plans to implement Select Bus Service in two parts of the
borough – along Woodhaven and Cross Bay boulevards, and along Main Street between Flushing and Jamaica. If done right, these plans could dramatically improve
the speed of bus service along both corridors. This is sorely needed.
But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The MTA and the city Department of Transportation need to come up with a more encompassing plan for the entire borough.
Residents in Eastern and Southeast Queens have limited transportation options. As
areas like Long Island City and Flushing - which has one only subway station - continue
to grow, the buses, subways and roads that connect those communities are reaching
their capacity. Our transit system is built to move people to and from Manhattan,
but today many Queens residents travel within the borough for work.
We call on our leaders to show us a comprehensive plan to improve transportation
and public transit access all across Queens. We also ask Borough President Melinda
Katz to make this a priority.
We cannot build a 21st Century borough with 20th Century infrastructure.

Vietnam Veterans will be
honored at an upcoming
event. Now that is why I applaud
the fact that at this year’s Little
Neck- Douglaston Memorial
Day parade is to honor the
Vietnam Veterans.
This parade is reported to
be the largest in the country.
Vietnam Veterans are being
recognized for their service to
our country. This year marks
the 50th anniversary of the war,
where 58,000 had died in a ten
year conflict. I myself served
during the Vietnam era and
remember a number of men I
knew from the neighborhood
and from school who died in the
conflict. There were also others
who died after the conflict from
Agent Orange. An example was
one young man I knew from
Queens Village, who contracted cancer, which was related to
the effects of Agent Orange and
died at the age of 25.
It’s been a long time coming
to honor these brave men and
women. To these brave men
and women I salute you for
serving our country in a most
difficult time in American
history.

We Must Do More For Sex Trafficking Victims

W
e’ve made great progress in recent years in
how sex trafficking
cases are adjudicated – and sex
trafficking victims treated – in
the legal system. Although
women were once arrested for
prostitution and sent back to
their pimps without any help,
we now acknowledge that these
individuals are forced into sex
work, often held hostage, beaten
and raped by their captors. The
Human Trafficking Intervention
Courts in New York, starting
with Queens County in 2004,
have led the way by treating those
arrested for prostitution as survivors of trafficking, not criminals.
Instead of sending the victims to
jail, women are connected with
service providers for counseling
and other resources to help them
leave the criminal sex trade.
Our legal framework for
handling sex trafficking cases
continues to evolve, and is
being pushed even further to
ensure that women are recognized as victims and traffickers
don’t escape justice. Human
trafficking legislation, which
has passed both houses of the
New York legislature, would
increase criminal penalties
for trafficking and require
law enforcement officials to
receive anti-human trafficking training. Queens District
Attorney Richard Brown created a pro-bono program for
immigrant trafficking victims
that connects survivors with
lawyers who work to vacate
their criminal convictions.
Manhattan District Attorney
Cyrus Vance is pushing legislation to make it easier to convict
child sex traffickers by making
it clear that no child can choose
to enter sex work of their own
volition. Congress created the
T-Visa to ensure that trafficking
victims who cannot return to
their home countries are able
to stay in the US legally.
But we’re missing something. While we reconfigure
the legal paradigm to recognize
the inherent humanity of trafficked women, we have failed to
provide them with the services
their humanity requires

organizations, such as Restore, Sanctuary for Families, GEMSand the New York
Asian Women’s Center, provide
crucial services to victims,
including culturally and linguistically matched long-term
trauma counseling to help victims return to a normal life after
years of horrific abuse; legal assistance to guide them through
immigration proceedings;
educational and employment
counseling, so they can return
to school or get a job; and peerled trainings to prevent girls
from entering the sex trade.
But these organizations are
chronically underfunded and
struggle to meet the demand
for their services. One organization that Queens courts
refer victims to for counseling
and support services has even
stopped accepting new referrals
for thirty days because it simply

These services also work to
provide victims with adequate
housing. As unbelievable as it
sounds, victims often have no
choice but to return to living with
their trafficker because they don’t
have anywhere else to go. While
we provide shelter for victims of
other gender-based crimes, there
are scarce resources for trafficking
victims in New York. Although
organizations in this field have
attempted to provide housing on
an ad hoc basis, they aren’t currently able to provide the level of
support these victims need.
It’s great that we’re reforming our legal system to protect
sex trafficking victims rather
than prosecuting them, and
focusing our attention on the
real criminals -- the traffickers themselves. But we must
increase funding for organizations that support trafficking
victims so we can help victims
leave the commercial sex trade,
and possibly even be able to
place victims in housing and
away from their traffickers.

are trafficked into the US each
year. Thousands of these women
travel through JFK Airport,
thinking they have come for a
new job and a brighter future,
only to find themselves enslaved
and forced to have sex with
twenty men each day. They are
isolated by language and cultural
barriers that make it difficult for
them to access help. Thousands
more come from within the
United States, fleeing abusive
circumstances at home or chasing the dream of living in New
York City -- until they get caught
in a cycle of virtual enslavement. As our legal framework
has changed to recognize that
these women are victims, not
criminals, we have an opportunity to help trafficked women.
We must ensure that the organizations working every day to
restore these women’s lives have
the resources they need to help
every victim, every time.

DOT Holds Closed-Door SBS Meeting

The Department of Transportation
announced its plan to implement dedicated bus lanes for Select Bus Service
on Woodhaven and Cross Bay boulevards and now local community leaders are taking the time to digest what
their proposal is.
Two days after the announcement
of the SBS plan, the DOT held a meeting with community leaders and stakeholders at Borough Hall to discuss the
plan and hear feedback.
The meeting, which was held on the
morning of March 26, was not open to
the public and press. When a Queens
Tribune reporter tried to sit in on the
meeting for this story, he was promptly asked to leave the room.
Eric Beaton, the DOT’s Director of
Transit Development, said there were
no reporters allowed at the meeting so
that the community leaders can speak
freely to the agency about the plan
without the possibility of being written about in an article.
Representatives from four community boards - 5, 6, 9 and 10 - were all
present at last week’s meeting.
The DOT added that the presentation showed to community
members would be available online
and there will be public workshops
starting on April 16, at PS 306 in
Woodhaven and three other meet-
ings in Forest Hills, Howard Beach
and Rockaway.
Residents who attended the meeting said it consisted of a mixture of
DOT staff presenting the plan along
with some feedback from the board
members as well.
Kenichi Wilson, head of CB9’s
transportation committee, who attended the meeting, said that there are
both good and bad aspects about the
bus plan, and those concerns would be
mentioned to the DOT to see if there
is a solution.
The positive, according to Wilson,
is that it does not take away much
parking along Woodhaven Boulevard,
and it should stop the issue of bus
bunching, which occurs when multiple buses end up stopping at one bus
stop, causing traffic behind then to
slow down or come to a full stop. He
said buses would be mostly confined
to one lane, streamlining the pace at
which they drive and make stops.
One possible drawback according
to Wilson – some businesses may lose
load docks in front of their stores after
the streets reconstruction is complete.
He said businesses along the route
could lose business if they do not have
an area to load supplies.
“If you build an island in the
middle of the boulevard, how are the
store owners going to have delivery to
them?” he asked.
Gary Giordano, district manager of
Community Board 5, said one of his
immediate concerns with the plan is
the safety of the pedestrians crossing
the street.
“Would they be running across
heavy traffic to catch the bus before it
leaves?” he asked.
According to the presentation
posted online, this plan would reduce
both bus and car travel on Woodhaven
Boulevard by about 20 to 28 percent.
Giordano said that would be a significant reduction if that is true.
There is also a potential issue of
making left turns on Woodhaven Boulevard after the plan is finished.
One of the renderings released by
the DOT last week shows how Woodhaven Boulevard and Metropolitan
Avenue would look with the SBS
lanes. There is no indication of a left
turn lane in the graphic.
Both Giordano and Wilson said
the possibility of losing left turns was
brought up during the meeting but
that issue would be discussed during
the workshops.
Giordano said many drivers make
that turn on Metropolitan and it is
needed if they want to get on that
thoroughfare. He added that adding
a left on Cooper Avenue could be an
alternative.
“It’s nearby but it’s a very acute
angle,” he said.

Billboards Aim To Reaffirm US-Korea Ties

In the wake of an attack on the
American ambassador to South Korea
last month in Seoul, one Queens businessman is trying to prevent relations
between the two countries from going
sour over the incident.
“Koreans love America and we want
Americans to know that,” Han Taikyuk, who also goes by his Americanized name, Ted Han, said. “ninety-nine
percent of Koreans condemn his act of
violence. We are friends and allies.”
On March 5, Mark Lippert, the
United States Ambassador to South
Korea, was attacked by a knife-wielding ex-con in Downtown Seoul. The
man cut the ambassador’s face and left
arm. His wounds required 80 stitches
and Lippert will need extensive therapy to regain use of his left fingers.
The attacker, identified as Kim Kijong, told officers during his arrest
that he attacked Lippert because he
opposed U.S.-South Korean military
exercises and said South Korea and
North Korea should be reunified. Kijong, who considers himself a Korean
nationalist, served a three-month prison term for attacking Japan’s ambassador in 2010.
In response to the attack, Han, who
operates Bridge Enterprises, an advertising firm based in Flushing that, among
other things, operate advertising space
in bus shelters, took out ads across the
city, including one on a bus shelter at
Northern Boulevard and 149th Street.
The ad on Northern Boulevard,
which is captioned in both Korean
and English “we stand together as
brothers and sisters,” features a photo
of Lippert meeting with South Korean
President Park Geun-hye just a few
days after the attack.
South Korea and the United States
have a long standing alliance going
back to World War II, when the fall
of the Japanese empire liberated Korea from decades of brutal Japanese
occupation. Since the Korean War, in
which the U.S. led a coalition against
communist North Korea and its allies, the two countries have had a close
economic and military alliance. More
than 30,000 American troops remain
in South Korea.

RFP For Citywide Ferry Service

A Request for Proposals has been
released for citywide ferry service, the
New York City Economic Development
Corporation announced this week.
Mayor Bill de Blasio first announced
the plan to expand ferry service during
his State of the City address in February. The administration announced
that it has committed about $55 million to create routes that would connect all five boroughs including Astoria and the Rockaways.
According to a press release announcing the RFP, NYCEDC is looking for “ferry operators, transit service
providers or other qualified firms to
operate a Citywide Ferry System.”
The first three routes of the ferry service are set to launch in 2017, including
to Astoria and the Rockaways, with two
more potentially launching in 2018. The
Citywide ferry service is scheduled to
cost $2.75 a ride, the same cost for riding a subway and bus in the City.
Some local elected officials, while
welcoming towards this plan that
starts in two years, are hoping to restore some kind of ferry service for the
rest of 2015 and 2016. De Blasio took
some heat earlier this year for shutting
down a route to the Rockaways that
was instituted after Superstorm Sandy,
saying it was too expensive to run and
ridership was too low.
State Sen. Joe Addabbo (D-Howard
Beach) has proposed to turn an unused U.S. Coast Guard dock in Fort
Tilden to serve as a dock for a restored
ferry service to run to the Rockaway
Peninsula.
“While we wait for the permanent
ferry service to set sail in 2017, utilizing this Fort Tilden dock could be a
smart, practical, temporary route to
take,” Addabbo said in a statement. “It
already exists, and requires no study.
A ferry operator could start pulling
boats up tomorrow. There is parking
for Rockaway residents wanting to
travel off the Peninsula and Gateway
Beach nearby for beach visitors.”

which points to one warm feeling for sports fans:

The starting rotation is shaping up
to be the strong suit for the Mets this
year with some young arms waiting
for a promotion out in Las Vegas.
The ageless Bartolo Colon will start
the season on Monday following up
on his solid 15-13 record last year.
He will be followed by the reigning
National League Rookie of the Year
Jacob deGrom. Matt Harvey, who
took Major League Baseball and the
City by storm in 2013 before tearing
his ulnar collateral ligament, will take
the third spot in the rotation. Early
indications from Port St. Lucie, Fla.
are leaning towards Harvey returning to his 2013 form. The lone lefty,
Jon Niese, will be the fourth starter.
The fifth spot is under some contention after Zach Wheeler’s season
ended before it even started. Dillon
Gee has a leg up on the role, considering his experience and tenure as
a Met, but Rafael Montero is pushing Manager Terry Collins to make
a tough decision, as he has been
cruising through teams in the Grapefruit League with a 2.40 ERA. Gee
is expected to hold on to the spot,

BULLPEN
The Mets bullpen took a hit early
in Spring Training, when lefty specialist Josh Edgin went down for the
year, requiring his own Tommy John
surgery. He has since been replaced
through the trade market as General
Manager Sandy Alderson pulled the
trigger on two deals to acquire lefty
relievers Jerry Blevins and Alex
Torres. Additional question marks
popped up in Port St. Lucie, with
inconsistent performances from last
year’s closer, Jenrry Mejía and setup man, Jeurys Familia. Their solid
play last year should keep them as
mainstays for the season, since their
pitching turned the bullpen into the
strength of the 2014 Mets. Flamethrowing Vic Black, who was also a
strength in the pen last year, looks
to be starting the season on the DL
after his offseason shoulder surgery.
Bobby Parnell is also expected to
miss the start of the season, as he
recovers from Tommy John surgery.
Carlos Torres is sure to be on
the squad, serving as a long
reliever. The last spot will
either go to Buddy Carlyle
or lefty Kevin Gilmartin, with
Gilmartin having the better
chance since he was a Rule
5 pick over the winter and
would return to the Minnesota Twins if he does not make
the Opening Day roster.
LINEUP

Juan Lagares will be in the
leadoff spot on Opening Day
and is sure to dazzle fans for
another season patrolling Citi
Field’s cavernous outfield. He
also showed a ton of potential with his bat last year and
started to become a threat
on the basepaths late in the
season as he got more comfortable. Right fielder Curtis
Granderson should start in
the two-hole for his second year in
orange and blue, but this season he
has his old hitting coach Kevin Long
alongside him and a closer fence
in right-center field. Grandy could
spend a decent amount of time in
the sixth spot in the lineup once second baseman Daniel Murphy returns
from his hamstring injury a couple
weeks into the season. MLB’s lone
captain, third baseman David Wright,
will be in his usual third spot with
high hopes on bouncing back from
his worst season as a pro, where he
suffered from a shoulder injury. The
refreshed Wright will be followed by
last year’s unsung hero in the lineup,
first baseman Lucas Duda, who led
the Metsies with 30 home runs and
91 RBIs. Wright’s good friend and
the major offseason acquisition, left
fielder Michael Cuddyer, will be in
the five-hole looking to come back
from an injury-riddled 2014. Cuddyer’s Spring Training power should
hopefully signify a return to his NL
Batting Champion form in 2013.
Mets fans, and the organization as
well, look to find out if Wilmer Flores
can be a starting shortstop and everyday hitter this year. Flores will be
followed by catcher Travis d’Arnaud,
who tore the cover off the ball in the
second half of 2014, showing proof
of the hype placed on him early in his
career. The lineup will be capped off
with Daniel Muno, who was impressive at the plate all spring, at second
base. Muno will most likely be sent
down to Triple A when Murphy returns from the DL.
BENCH
Catcher Anthony Recker will return to the bench for the third straight
season to provide some pop off the
pine and solid defense. Ruben Tejada will be the backup utility infielder.
Eric Campbell will reprise his role
as an overall utility man for the outfield and infield while also being the
emergency third-string catcher. Kirk

It Doesn’t Have to Rule Your Life
Urinary incontinence (UI) is a very common condition, but many people have trouble discussing it with their doctor
because of embarrassment, a lack of knowledge about treatment options and the misconception that it is a “normal”
part of aging. Farzeen Firoozi, MD, a urologist specializing in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery
at the Arthur Smith Institute for Urology, part of North Shore-LIJ Health System, discusses what you need to know
about this condition.
Bladder or urinary incontinence (UI), also known as
a loss of bladder control, can have symptoms ranging
from mild leaking to uncontrollable wetting. There are
several types of UI, including:
• Urge incontinence — The inability to hold urine
long enough to reach a restroom. It is often found in
people who have conditions such as diabetes, stroke,
dementia, Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis,
but may be an indication of other diseases or
conditions that would also warrant medical attention.
• Stress incontinence — Leakage of urine during
exercise, coughing, sneezing, laughing, lifting heavy
objects or other body movements that put pressure
on the bladder. This is the most common type of
incontinence in younger women.
• Functional incontinence — Leakage due to a
difficulty reaching a restroom in time because of
physical conditions such as arthritis.
• Overflow incontinence — Leakage that occurs when
the quantity of urine produced exceeds the bladder’s
capacity to hold it.
What you need to know about UI:
• 200 million people are affected by UI worldwide.
• 1 in 3 Americans age 30 to 70 have experienced
bladder control loss, and may be living with symptoms.
• 2 in 3 people with UI do not use any treatments to
manage their condition.
• According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC),
51 percent of people aged 65 and older living at home
reported bladder and/or bowel incontinence.
While one-third of American adults think that UI
is a normal part of aging that they have to accept,
incontinence can be improved or completely cured
with proper evaluation and treatment. The Smith

women who want to discuss these symptoms and

LIC Gallery Celebrates Women Through Art

As a coda to Women’s History Month,
a Long Island City art gallery curated
a varied exhibit honoring women and
meditating on women’s issues.
The Conception Gallery in Long
Island City’s Falchi Building held its
opening night for the exhibit, called
“Woman Up,” last Friday. Curated by
Rachel Wilkins-Blum and Mike Wolf,
“Woman Up” displayed dozens of
paintings, sculptures and multi-media
pieces, while opening night featured
performances including music from the
all-female Afro-Brazilian drum group,
BatalaNYC.
“When we thought about Women’s
History Month, there were so many
ways we could take it. We didn’t want
to just necessarily put ourselves in a
box,” Wilkins-Blum said, adding that
curators asked for work about iconic
women, meaningful relationships with
women or women that have had an
impact on artists’ personal lives.
“So we really got a whole host of different subjects, which is really interesting,” she added.
The pieces span abstract paintings
to portraits to sculpture, and themes
run the gamut from romantic to political. While most pieces were displayed
salon-style across the gallery’s wide
walls, two larger works balanced the
room: Gino Miles’s tribute to the
women codebreakers of WWII – a steel
sculpture representing morse code –
and to two large pieces inspired by the
hundreds of school girls captured by
Boko Haram in Nigeria last year, by
artist Mary Mihelic.
Artist Senia Crespo, who goes by
Crespo professionally, said she appreciated the opportunity to participate in
such a diverse exhibit.
“I was really blown away by the
interpretation of the theme by other
artists,” she said.
For Wilkins-Blum, the exhibit also
offered an opportunity to address the
particular challenges faced by women
in the arts, including lower pay and
weaker representation in galleries and
museums. Even as a curator, she noted,
she receives more submissions of work
from men than from women.
According to Wilkins-Blum, 53 of
the exhibit’s 64 artists were women.

arts and as an artist myself, of course

in “Deli Man,” a new
documentary film from
director Erik Greenberg

to the meat of how delis
got their start in the United States.
“It’s a piece of deli history,” Parker
said, after watching the film. “It gets
right to the heart and soul of what
makes delis, delis.”
The film stars Ziggy Gruber, a Culinary Institute of America chef and
owner of Kenny and Ziggy’s delicatessen in Houston, Texas, as he travels
around to some of New York’s most
renowned delis, including Carnegie,
Katz’s, the 2nd Avenue Deli and many
others.
According to Parker, of the 1,500
kosher delis that once operated in New
York City, only 21 are left. He said the
film not only looks at the so-called
“meccas” in the deli game, but some of
the challenges facing delis in the 21st
Century and sheds some light on why
kosher delis have been blinking out of
existence.
“The film was really well told and
worth-telling,” Parker
adds. “It is really something that should be
seen.”

than 70 years and is a big
supporter of the local
community. From their

corned beef sandwiches,
Ben’s has been a staple in
the industry.
Parker said that if his
grandchildren ever ask

Heems’ Rhymes Are
Queens Inspired

Himanshu Suri, also known as
Heems to those familiar with his music,
has made it from the suburbs of Bellerose to a music career that is surging.
Suri, who grew up in Bellerose and
Glen Oaks, has risen to solo stardom
with the release of his first full-length
album “Eat Pray Thug” last month.
He used to be in the popular hiphop trio Das Racist until they broke
up a couple of years ago. Since then,
Suri released a mix tape titled “Nehru
Jackets” in 2012 and now his first solo
album since the group’s break-up.
In an interview with the Queens
Tribune at his Long Island home, Suri
talked about his upbringing in Queens,
how that has influenced his music and
the solo album as well. His family spent
a few years in Flushing before moving
to the Glen Oaks/Bellerose area. They
still visited Flushing frequently even
after the move.

went back to Flushing, because our
temple was there, my grandmother was
there and other relatives were there,”
he said. “Flushing was definitely a big
part of my Queens upbringing, but
more of my earlier memories were as-

because he lived in suburban Queens as
opposed to Manhattan.
“I always felt like an outsider to the
American experience, but because I’m
from Queens, I also felt like an outsider to the New York experience,” he

looking at America, but also being in
Queens and looking at Manhattan. As a
writer or an artist, having this perspective as an outsider is important to my
work and because I’m from Queens, it’s
magnified.”
Suri plans to tour the United States
this summer and later Europe and Asia.

Lost In LIC
At a hearing last month of
the City Council’s Cultural
Affairs Committee, attendees
could not hold back their excitement of the New York City
arts world.
The hearing, held on March
20 and featuring former Queens
Museum head and now Department of Cultural Affairs Commissioner Tom Finkelpearl,
discussed how the proposed
budget would affect the City
agency, which oversees nearly
three dozen City-owned museums and cultural institutions,
as well public arts programs,
When the committee’s
chairman, Queens’ own Jimmy
Van Bramer, brought up the
Musicians OF QuEEns
popularity of the arts in the
City, cheers erupted from the
audience.
But in the formal chambers
of City government, such outbursts are a no-no. Van Bramer,
who was empathetic with the
excited hearing attendees,
kindly reminded them to show
decorum, and should they want
to express their approval, they
could do so quietly - by showing
the palms of their hands and
wiggling their fingers.
We at QConf can’t help but
wonder which is more distracting, the "Woot! Woot!" of the
crowd in a City Hall committee
room, or a bunch of people doing jazzhands instead.

It’s amazing the many
types of treasures you will
find on the streets of Queens.
But here’s one thing even we
jaded New Yorkers we weren’t
expecting.
While walking on Center
Boulevard in Long Island City
last week, we noticed a long
white piece of plastic sliding
across the sidewalk,
It was a toothbrush- one of
those vibrating ones that help
get the hard-to-reach plaque
out of your gums. We know
it works, because it was on.
Vibrating about the sidewalk
like a fish out of water.
Did someone frustratingly
toss it from a bathroom window
in one of the apartment towers
after trying to get rid of their
gingivitis? Did it come from a
driver in a hurry
We hope its owner quickly
got a new one.
Though the tempo may be
quick and the audience buzzing, Astoria-based musician
Mike Bono always wields his
guitar with comfort, precision
and originality. Listeners can
expect both solid technique
and unique melodic choices
from this 23-year-old artist.
The recent Berklee College
of Music graduate has already
brought his music to France,
Ireland and California as well
as jazz clubs throughout
Boston and New York City.
Although jazz seems to be his
calling, Bono fell into the genre
almost by accident.
“I heard this guitar player
on the radio. His name was
Pat Martino,” Bono recalled,
referring to the renowned
guitarist and composer. “It
blew my mind. From then on,
I started buying some of his
records and talking to people,
and finding out about more
music to check out.”
These experiences marked
the start of a busy career as
a performer and led him to
Boston after high school,
to study at Berklee. Here he
met Matthew Halpin (tenor
sax), Naseem Alatrash (cello),
Christian Li (piano), Roberto Giaquinto (drums) and
Jared Henderson (upright
bass), who would join him
as members of the Mike Bono
Group.
“From Where You Are,” the
Mike Bono Group’s debut album, was released in the fall of
2013. Each musician displays
remarkable technique, and
together their voices blend
seamlessly, engulfing the
listener in a multi-dimensional
sound.
According to Bono, part of
the group’s success is due to
their personal connection.
“We’re all best of friends,
we live together, and a lot
of the music that is on that
record we’ve been playing for
probably three, almost four
years now,” he said. “A lot of
it, we learned and developed
together, which I think is really
special.”
Bono moved to Astoria in
2013. He said that his new surroundings have had a significant impact on his writing.
“I’ve been going out and
hearing music all the time,
and I get to see some of my
heroes play on a regular basis,
which is amazing. I think that’s
definitely influenced a lot of the
newer stuff I’ve been writing,”
he explained.
When he’s not performing
or writing, Bono can be found
teaching classes at the Calhoun School in Manhattan, as
well as private lessons.
He said that he enjoys the
task of bringing beginners
into music.
“Teaching someone to play
starting from nothing is actually a lot more challenging,”
he said. “How do you teach
them things that they should
know fundamentally about the
guitar in a way that’s not going
to bore them and make them
not want to play?
“I really do love teaching
at the high school,” he added.
“They’re really open to learning and I have a great relationship with them, so it makes it
really fun for me.”
The Mike Bono Group is
performing regularly, with
plans to record later this year,
