Days Of Prayer, Mourning And Support For Nepal

After a devastating earthquake
shook Nepal last weekend, New Yorkers poured into Jackson Heights’ Diversity Plaza to raise support and remember those lost.
The 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck
Nepal last Saturday morning. A rising
death toll recently passed 5,000, and
tremors continue to shake the region.
Diversity Plaza, located off of
Broadway between 73rd and 74th
Streets, saw a gathering of hundreds
for a vigil on Sunday. Many have
remained for long days and nights
over the past week, manning donation tables, lighting candles or writing
prayers and thoughts for the Nepalese
on a colorful mosaic of sticky notes.
Queens is home to roughly 5,000
Nepal-born residents, according to
the U.S. Census Bureau.
According to Pralay Rajbhandari,
a member of the New York Nepalese
Football Club who helped organized
Sunday’s vigil, fundraising efforts that
night brought in more than $23,000
and continued throughout the week.
“[It] is still not enough, but we are
doing everything, every effort, to do
the collection and send it back home as
soon as possible,” Rajbhandari said.

the capital region of Kathmandu.
Dorje Lama, an East Elmhurst resident whose family resides the Helambu region, said, “people can carry you
and walk 20 blocks in Kathmandu and
take you to a hospital… but in the villages, they have no hope – people have
to carry you for seven days to get to
Kathmandu. It’s impossible.”
Rajbhandari noted this discrepancy
as well and said donations collected since
Sunday will be sent to rural villages.

described difficulty communicating
with family and friends back home
and its emotional impact.
Binamra Khadka said he has been
able to connect with his loved ones
only a few times, by phone or Viber, a
messaging app.
“For me, mentally, it’s exhausting,”
Khadka said. “Just to know you have
family and friends back home and you
basically cannot protect them.”
Lama said he was finally able to
connect with a cousin on Monday at
2 a.m., and learned that his village’s
situation is dire.
“My family, all my villagers, they’re
gathered in one spot… by the monastery,
which is also shaken. They have a few
tents for hundreds of people,” he said.

he tried to connect with his mother for
three days. He ultimately reached her
after a friend back home with a working phone went looking for her.
“Back home I have my mother,
brothers, sisters and everybody, and
we’re really worried about them,”
Tandul Lama explained. “They are
having a very hard time. It’s cold I
heard, it’s raining there, they’re trying
to get together, be strong.”
New Yorkers who want to support
relief efforts have a number of options.
Councilman Daniel Dromm (DJackson Heights), who was present for
Sunday’s vigil, suggested contributing
to Adhikaar, a Woodside-based human
rights organization for the Nepalese
community, as well as the Red Cross
and UNICEF.
Adhikaar is accepting online donations at life.indiegogo.com/fundraisers/immediate-relief-for-nepal-earthquake-survivors.

Whitestone Rallies Against Proposed Development

Developers with Edgestone Group,
LLC, are proposing to develop 107
townhouses on a 15-acre vacant lot at
151-45 6th Rd. in Whitestone, which
would bring a total of 203 new residential units to the community.
But many of the project’s proposed
neighbors have voiced opposition to
the plans, arguing that the proposed
development of 107 townhouses is contrary to their initial proposal back in
2008 – when they were given approval
to construct 52-single family homes.
“That’s out of control,” Devon
O’Connor, president of the Welcome
to Whitestone Civic Association, said.
“I understood when they [proposed
building] 50 homes, but for it to be
107 two-family homes is outrageous.”
We Love Whitestone, a nonprofit
civic association, passed a resolution,
according to their website, stating that
they will not support any development
at the CYO/Whitestone pool site other
than previously approved plans for 56
single family homes at the Edgewater
site.
However, because a previously filed
zoning permit expired, developers can
build high-density units “as of right,”
and are not required to file for a permit to build multi-family dwellings.
State Sen. Tony Avella (D-Bayside)
said he issued a warning in opposition to any construction outside of the
originally agreed-upon plans.
“This developer is declaring war on
the community,” Avella said in a statement. “When I was a City Councilman
representing this area in 2008, the
neighborhood made it very clear that
they would not accept the construction of anything other than singlefamily homes at this site.”
Avella continued, saying it is “unacceptable” for the developers to now
try and challenge plans that were supported by both Community Board 7
and City Council.
“We are prepared to fight this project proposed by Edgestone Group and
will not stand to see another residential area succumb to overdevelopment,” Avella said.
City Councilman Paul Vallone
(D-Bayside) joined Avella in taking a
stand against the proposed plans.
“Any new development here must
follow what the community and City
Council agreed upon in 2008 and conform to the character of the neighbor-
hood,” Vallone said in a statement.
“Quadrupling the amount of units
and eliminating the 3-acre waterfront
park is a direct attack on Whitestone’s
quality of life.”
In the meantime, Edgestone continues to work on remediating the site,

ACS Abruptly Closes East Elmhurst Daycare

More than 100 parents are reeling
from the loss of their neighborhood
daycare and pre-K center, while more
than 30 employees are scrambling to
find new work, after the Administration for Children’s Services abruptly
announced that East Elmhurst’s Malcolm X Early Childhood Education
Center will close due to a rent hike.
Located at 111-12 Northern Blvd.,
the Malcolm X center is sponsored
by Sheltering Arms, an ACS Contractor and Citywide organization serving
low-income families. The center has
been a part of the East Elmhurst/Corona community for four decades and
serves low-income families by priority.
According to Principal Hope Cannady,
it is the community’s only center with
ACS programs for kids as young as
two-years-old.
According to an ACS spokesperson,
Malcolm X will close on July 24 “because of a substantial rent increase” on
the property.
Cannady said that ACS informed
her of the closure decision in midApril. Then, before she had an opportunity to inform parents and without
her knowledge – and two weeks before
the first deadline to apply for Universal
pre-K programs – ACS sent letters to
parents announcing the closure.

“A lot of people were crying, staff
were crying,” she said. “This school is
not just a school… It’s like losing family members.”
Xiomara Dunning, a family services
worker at Malcolm X, said that she has
been working on relocations “family by
family,” though most cannot afford the
fees at nearby private daycares.
“Those families are being left out
in the street. Where do they go?” she
said.
Regarding the transition, ACS provided parents with a list of child care
centers within a three-mile radius.
However, many parents said that the
burden of finding new placement remains overwhelming.
Jessica Guaman, who has a two- and
three-year old at Malcolm X, described
the stress and difficulty of finding a new
daycare. She worried that, with limited
options in the region, she may have
to enroll her kids in different centers,
meaning pick-up and drop-off could
interfere with her husband’s work and
her plans to return to work.
Miriam Montes, who has a threeand four-year old at Malcolm X, said,
“I’m feeling crazy. I’m feeling disappointed.”
Montes said she has not begun
searching for new daycare options because she wants to focus her energy on
fighting to keep the center open.
For her part, Dunning said, “if we
could just get at least a year for us to
be able to relocate to another site, we
would really appreciate that.”
“We are really upset and we are feeling disrespected that such a change
came overnight,” Dunning added.
Parents also said that ACS added insult to injury by providing the closure
announcement letter and transition information exclusively in English.
ACS responded that Spanish-language materials were mailed out last
week and some Spanish translation was
available at Sheltering Arms’ parent
meeting.
For the Malcolm X community,
the decision to close the center runs
directly against Mayor Bill de Blasio’s
promises to champion early childhood
education.
“The mayor really needs to look
deeply into the situation,” Cannady
said. “I’ve looked up all his quotes and
all his speeches that he’s given all across
the City, where he is adamant about
maintaining early childhood programs
to bridge the gap. But if schools that
are doing well like ours are being taken
away, how is that bridging the gap?”

Third Avenue Exit Nearly Done

MTA Bridges and Tunnels is nearly
finished with a $109 million reconstruction of the 3rd Avenue exit ramp
on the Whitestone Bridge and rehabilitate the roadway superstructure.
The project, which has been ongoing since January 2013, will also add a
new emergency breakdown shoulder,
a deceleration lane and new curbing
at the 14th Avenue exit. It should be
finished by the end of May.
Now, the City Department of
Transportation announced plans to
install bollards at the exit along the
service road of the Whitestone Expressway to help calm traffic and flexible delineators once the ramp opens
to deter speeding as vehicles exit.
In addition to deterring speeding,
the 70 feet of new flexible delineators
aims to better organize traffic by minimizing conflicts between vehicles already using the service road and those
merging onto it from the exit.
“We have been working very closely with NYC DOT on the design and
collaboration of these safety enhancements to the 3rd Avenue exit, which
are in keeping with the Mayor’s Vision
Zero program,” Chris Saladino, an
MTA facility engineer for the Whitestone Bridge, said.
At the request of the community
and elected officials, the DOT will continue studying the area for additional
safety measures, which includes reviews for enhanced signage, markings
and other traffic calming measures.

Participatory Budgeting
The City has asked that each Council Member engage their constituents in establishing a priority list of Capital projects and voting to fund up to $1 million. This is
a good step towards empowering communities to take hold of municipal spending. It
removes the backroom deals of who gets the largess in capital projects. Transparency
is also the best form of government and this process is a step in the right direction.
We are saddened that five members of the Queens delegation - Elizabeth Crowley,
Rory Lancman, Peter Koo, Daniel Dromm and Ruben Wills - did not take up the cause.
To those who did, we commend their leadership. The others should not be afraid to
share in the decision making with their communities. We hope that this year’s list
will get acted upon and put in place. Unfortunately, several of the items chosen last
year have yet to be implemented. We suggest that the community members who attended this year’s participatory budgeting process keep active and keep the promises
made by their Council members.
We also hope that those communities that did not partake in this process call their
elected officials and ask, “why not us?” Its a worthwhile cause to engage people in
the budget process and not let lobbyists and selective influential groups determine
what is good for our communities.

have endured job losses, stagnant wages and skyrocketing
levels of income inequality.
Given those facts, it is inexplicable why any politician
in New York could support
the Trans-Pacific Partnership
(TPP) or “fast track” legislation
that makes this unfair trade
deal possible.
As secretary-treasurer of
United Food and Commercial
Workers (UFCW) 1500, I stand
with hard-working families
all across New York who are
fighting to achieve a better
life for themselves and their
loved ones.
Unfortunately, some Republican and Democratic Members
of Congress, as well as President
Obama, have chosen to support
a fast track trade deal that will
generally make life worse.
If passed, the TPP will be
one of the largest trade deals
the world has ever known. It
includes 12 countries along the
Pacific Rim and would impact
792 million people. Altogether,
this massive trade agreement
would govern 40 percent of the
world’s economic output.
Amazingly and most concerning, every single line of this
trade deal is being negotiated
in secret.
Labor unions, environmental groups, civil rights organizations and consumer advocates
have been shut out of TPP negotiations, while 600 corporate
lawyers are advising the U.S.
Trade Representative.
Instead of addressing these
failures, the Obama Administration is asking for “fast track” authority – a policy that will force
Congress to simply approve or
reject the finalized trade agreement, with no opportunity to
make improvements. This “take
it or leave it” approach all but
guarantees that workers and
families all across New York will
pay a steep price.
Enough is enough.
Republican and Democratic
politicians who support the TPP
and “fast tracked” legislation
through are ignoring the brutal
truths of past trade agreements.
It is America’s hard-working
men and women, and their
families, who will bear the biggest burden as jobs pay less or
disappear completely.
To be clear, this is not about
partisan politics. Fast tracking
the TPP will hurt Republican,
Democratic and Independent
workers all across New York.
On behalf of all hard-working men and women, whether
they are part of our union
family or not, we urge every
member of Congress from New
York to oppose the TPP and
“fast track” legislation.
We can only hope that they
will do what is right for all the
people of our great state
and nation.

the U.S. testing market with nobid contracts in New York, New
Jersey and many other states and
cities. Pearson has a paranoid
passion for secrecy, as shown

media remarks posted by New

begin charging grocery shoppers a fee
for each plastic shopping bag
distributed at stores in order
to reduce their use, I thought
it is appropriate to voice my
objections publicly.
Plastic bags do not just wind
up as litter flying in the street
or getting stuck in trees. Plastic
bags actually facilitate physically
challenged individuals who
do grocery shopping. Having
to rely on bringing reusable
shopping bags to grocery stores
would be cumbersome at best or
become an additional obstacle
to overcome for a physically
challenged shopper. I don’t think
it is appropriate for shoppers
who rely on plastic bags that
are extremely lightweight and
provide a means of conveyance
to be burdened with additional

As a volunteer tutor at a Queens
public school, I saw how standardized tests yield sub-standard
education. The only skills kids
gain from them is the ability to
fill in bubbles. Pearson made
huge mistakes in producing and
scoring these tests, but its clueless clients, including New York
State’s Department of Education,
renew contracts rather than seek
competitive bids from other
educational publishers.
Why do they have such
blind faith in Pearson?
Full disclosure: I retired
from McGraw-Hill (19682003), the second largest educational publisher, now owned
by Apollo Global Management
(a private equity firm). I have
no ax to grind or any skin in the
game. But no publisher should
have a chokehold on our children’s education. If New York’s
education leaders want parents
to opt into Common Core, they
must opt out of Pearson, public
education’s worst predator.

Worrisome Woodside Intersection Made Slower

An intersection notorious for long
waits and near-hits got an upgrade
recently, which neighbors hope will
create a safer crossing for the students
and seniors that need it.
Located at 51st Street and Skillman
Avenue, the intersection received a
new traffic light and crossing signals
this month, after years of campaigning from the Woodside and Sunnyside
community. Councilman Jimmy Van
Bramer (D-Sunnyside), who began
pushing for the traffic signal after a pedestrian was struck at the intersection,
announced its installation on Monday.
“One stop light may not seem
like the biggest thing that government can do for a community,” Van
Bramer said. “But if you live in this

DOT Gets SBS Input In Forest Hills

The City Department of Transportation, joined
by the MTA, held its second meeting last week to
get community feedback on the proposed Select Bus
Service for the Q52/Q53 route coming to Woodhaven and Cross Bay boulevards.
DOT representatives at the meeting said nothing is set in stone for the plan, so they are having
four meetings in different neighborhoods along the
route to learn how residents and stakeholders feel
about the project, which will turn the right lane into
a dedicated bus lane in each direction on the main
road along with two lanes for vehicles and a twolane service road separated by a median.
“I think we’re getting a lot of terrific feedback,” Eric
Beaton, DOT’s director of transit development, said.
“It’s much better to get this kind of discussion going
early and get a project that fits the community.”
Attendees were split into small groups with MTA
Bus Company facilitators, who explained the plan,
answered questions and took notes on any concerns
or advice.
Jessica Cignarella, a facilitator from the MTA,
said the entire route, which has about 300,000 bus
riders, is about 14 miles long and has had a double
digit number of fatalities along the corridor, with
the majority of those involving pedestrians.
“It’s a dangerous corridor… so creating some
improvements for the area is something that we’re
really looking into and we really want to hear input
on,” she said. “We have made a pretty strong effort
to keep all the community members and different
stakeholders involved.”
Josselyn Atahualpa of Corona, who works with
the Rider’s Alliance and takes the Q23 and the Q53
along Woodhaven Boulevard, said that crossing the
boulevard is dangerous, and buses sometimes will be
late, and a few will show up at once, clogging up the
bus stops.
“It’s also a scary place to take the bus in the middle of the night,” she said. “I’m really excited about
the bus station improvements.”
The plan aims to create shorter wait times and
provide safer access to bus stations, with larger wait
stations and better lighting. There would be offboard fare collection machines at all SBS stops and
riders can board at any of three doors.
All of the express and local routes would also use
the bus lanes, but there will be different stop poles
and riders will still have to pay on the bus.
Although the route in the northern portion will
not be changing much, the Atlantic Avenue stop will
be discontinued and stops will be added at 91st, 101st
and Pitkin Avenues in Woodhaven and Ozone Park,
respectively.
Vance Barbour, a member of the Woodhaven
Residents Block Association, has been taking the
QM15 on the corridor everyday for 15 years, and
said that he did not like the plan because of the left
hand turns that will be taken away along the route.
“You can’t not have left-hand turns off of this,”
Barbour said. “It’s going to kill the businesses in all
of the communities. We don’t need a highway, we
don’t want a highway.”
Barbour was not opposed to the SBS plan as a
whole. He said he preferred for the bus lanes to be in
the middle of the boulevard.
“This is not a good idea,” Barbour said. “Where the
turns are now, you can’t get rid of any of the turns.”
Toby Sheppard Bloch of Glendale said that he is
excited about the project, because the current conditions on Woodhaven Boulevard require a change,
and he wishes buses were a more viable mode of
transportation.
“I think Woodhaven’s broken for all travelers. It’s
disorganized, it’s frustrating and it’s dangerous,” he
said. “The only thing worse than a long commute is
someone getting hurt or killed. I feel like this eliminates a lot of conflict.”

This Friday, you can watch the premiere of the director’s cut of a film
that not only takes place in Queens,
but also at the Queens Tribune.
The director’s cut of the 2010 film “The
Emerging Past,” a film by Ridgewood native Thomas Churchill, is set to premiere
at the New York City International Film
Festival this Friday in Manhattan.
“The Emerging Past,” stars Krista
Grotte as a Queens Tribune photographer. After she is discovered tak-
ing a life-altering picture of a sacrifice
ritual, her world suddenly becomes a
jigsaw puzzle that she quickly needs to
solve before her emerging past catches
up with her. With nowhere to go, she
turns to her coworker Dylan, played by
Brooke McCarter, for help. As stress
levels rise in her search for the truth,
her coworker spins the game into another level as he reveals just who he really is. As she soon realizes, the past is
never where you left it.
The film was shot in Ridgewood,
Glendale, Maspeth and Middle Village,
and includes scenes inside the Queens
Tribune’s former Fresh Meadows office, where the newspaper moved from
in 2010. The director’s cut now includes scenes filmed in the Tribune’s
current office in Whitestone.
The director’s cut follows the previous version of the film released in
2010 that won six awards as it played
the circuit. Churchill said he was “never happy” with the original cut and decided to film a new version.
“That version is now a collector’s
item; never to be released again...ever,”
Churchill said of the original film.

As part of their expansion plans,

budgeting process.
Ulrich’s office announced the five
winners that will split the $1 million
pot that is allocated for the citywide
initiative.
The following projects will be getting funding after voting in the district
concluded earlier this month: School

Speaking to a small gathering of
reporters in his Ozone Park office,
Ulrich said, the process went well this
year, with hundreds of residents coming out to vote. He said they group
projects like schools and libraries
into one group so that residents can
vote on all of those related projects
together instead of pitting schools or
libraries against each other.
“We have done a very, I think,
blended and balanced
approach to participatory budgeting that
works well and we
want to continue,” Ulrich said.
Ulrich currently has
not expanded participatory budgeting to
the Community Board
10 portion of the district, which includes
Howard Beach and
Lindenwood. He
also runs the program for residents
in the Rockaway
peninsula.
When
asked
about expanding it
further, Ulrich said
he wants to bring
it to CB 10 and he
will look to hire additional staffers to
handle the work
related to organizing the program.
Martin Colberg, president of the
Woodhaven Residents Block As-
sociation, had mixed feelings about
the results from this year’s budgeting. He said he was happy to see the
emergency call boxes get funding
because it is needed in Forest Park
following several crimes there within
the past few years including a rape
and a burglary.
“How can you not want something
that can help you in the case of an
emergency?” Colberg said.
To the contrary, he said that many
of the ballots only had a single vote on
it for the school project. He suggested
that parents were stuffing the ballot
with votes just for the school project.
Colberg said he would like to see
a minimum vote amount if you vote
on a participatory budgeting ballot to
give all project options a fair shot at
winning a slice of the money pie. On
this year’s ballot, there were eight
projects to choose from and you can
vote for a maximum of five.
“They really should have to pick
five projects to make it more fair,” he
said.
Simcha Waisman, the president
of the One Stop Richmond Hill Community Center, said he is satisfied
with the projects that won this year
and the money will benefit the future
of the community.
“As long as its good for the community and the kids, it’s good for us,”
he said.
In District 23, represented by
Councilman Mark Weprin (D-Oakland
Gardens), more than 2,000 voters
came out to participate in this year’s
participatory budget process, approving three of ten proposed capital projects, for a total cost of $1.2 million.
Although it was a tight race,
technology upgrades for nine local
schools garnered the most votes from

Logistics, Fairness Concern Pols Who Don’t Take Part
While participatory budgeting
has gained popularity in much of
the City, there are some council
members who currently do not participate in the initiative.
In Queens, there are five council
members who do not have participatory budgeting in their districts, Elizabeth Crowley (D-Glendale), Daniel
Dromm (D-Jackson Heights), Rory
Lancman (D-Hillcrest), Peter Koo
(D-Flushing) and Ruben Wills (DRochdale Village).
Crowley’s district includes Maspeth, Middle Village, Glendale and
portions of Ridgewood, Woodhaven
and Woodside.
Sources said Crowley has not
yet done PB because she does not
want to let residents who do not
support her decide where money for
projects would be allocated.
“She only wants to be [representative] for her people,” one source, who
asked to remain anonymous, said.
Bob Holden, who is the president
of the Juniper Park Civic Association, said there would be a lot of interest if Crowley brought PB to her
district, but she does not want to al-
locate discretionary funds to every
group in her district and accused
her of playing favorites to her political supporters.
He said there are several areas
in the district that could use that
money, including renovating the
baseball field and hockey rink at Juniper Valley Park.
“We need Participatory Budgeting
because she’s not fair, she doesn’t
disperse her money fairly,” he said.
“This speaks volumes about who
she is as a council member.”
Colberg said the WRBA has spoken to Crowley’s office in the past
about PB, and while they are happy
to offer their opinion to her office
about the initiative, it is ultimately
her choice to participate or not.
“If an option is given to one part
of Woodhaven, it should be given to
the other,” Colberg said.
Gary Giordano, District Manager
of Community Board 5, which covers much of Crowley’s District, said
Crowley could decide not to be in
PB because she may already know
which projects she wants to fund.
He added that she has funded
projects in the past like the Glendale
Library, the running track at Juniper
Valley Park and the renovation of
Evergreen Park. Giordano said it is
a positive to bring a process like PB
to any community.
“Most of the time, to air it out, it is
healthy,” Giordano said.
A spokesperson for Crowley’s office said they are discussing bringing participatory budgeting to the
district next year.
“Until then, I will continue to engage community stake holders including; city agencies, community
boards, local principals, and civic
leaders to help determine how best
to allocate discretionary funding in
the 30th Council District,” Crowley
said in a statement.
As for the other council members, Lancman said in a statement
that he still has concerns about Participatory Budgeting.
“My concern with participatory
budgeting is that it potentially exacerbates the lack of funding for underserved and underrepresented communities, and might shortchange
long-term capital planning needs in
favor of immediate results,” he said
through a spokesperson. “Allocating
funding for capital projects is a responsibility that I take very seriously. I’m proud that in the current fiscal
year, we were successful in allocating almost $1,000,000 to improve
community parks, $350,000 for
health care facilities, over $250,000
in library improvements, $500,000
to higher education, and nearly
$3,000,000 to twenty-two public
schools in our council district.”
Koo, through his spokesperson,
said he has a responsibility to make
sure funding is allocated to every
part of his district and their office
reviews constituent records to see
what needs are not being met.
“I wholeheartedly agree with participatory budgeting in principle, and
while not an official participant, my
office takes great care to ensure every request for funding gets its fair
shake,” Koo said.
Wills’ office declined to comment
for this article and Dromm has not
returned requests for comment as
of press time.

Councilman Paul Vallone (D-Bayside), more than 2,300 votes were
cast, approving four of ten proposed
capital projects, for a total cost of
$995,000.
Plans to create a $400,000 stateof-the-art music studio at Bayside
High School for the 350 students en-
rolled in the “Career & Technical Education” program for music production
and performance, garnered the most
votes from residents with 1,430.
“We are thrilled to have our project selected as one of the winners
and thank Council Member Vallone’s
office for giving us this opportunity,”
John Hirata, Bayside High School’s
Assistant Principal of Operations,
said. “Participatory budgeting was
a great experience for our students
and we look forward to the positive
effect the new music studio will provide to our academic programming”
With 1,041 votes, upgrades to PS
169’s auditorium came next. Costing
approximately $400,000, the capital
expense will help replace lighting,
curtains, sound system and seating
for students and faculty who use the
auditorium for after-school, summer
and community programs.
Coming in third – with 934 ballots
cast – voters also approved spending $90,000 for technology upgrades
at PS 159, which will help finance
new Smart Boards for classrooms
and laptops for the school.
“Thank you to the education committee and all the volunteers who
took the time, and we appreciate all
the help,” Paul DiDio, principal of PS
159, said.
Lastly, voters cast 880 votes to
spend $105,000 for NYPD to install
three security cameras around the
district.
Now that the votes are in, the hard
part comes. Several past winters of
participatory budget process are still
in the works
In 2012, voters in District 23 approved $35,000 for roof and shingle
replacement at the Brooder House at
the Queens Country Farm Museum.
The work still hasn’t been done.
“It takes years,” Amy Boncardo, executive director of the Queens Country
Farm, said. “That is the nature of using
City money for capital expenses.”
Boncardo said she is grateful
for Weprin’s funding and understands that it takes a long time before they can begin the construction.
Ulrich, meanwhile, acknowledged
two of the projects that won last year
– the installation of bus countdown
clocks at four stops in CB 9 and repaving of Woodhaven Boulevard in
the district – are still in the works. His
office will meet with the appropriate
agencies on those proposals “in the
near future.”

Jody Kriss. Front For The Russian Mafia And Yanukovich
Usually information about the mafia gets leaked to the media from
the FBI or police reports, but rarely from informants or key players in
the organizations themselves. That’s why the following story piqued
my interest and I began to investigate the alleged activities linking the
Russian mafia to the U.S. real estate market.

following story piqued my interest and I began to investigate the alleged
activities linking the Russian mafia to the U.S. real estate market.
Jody Kriss, the former CFO of Bayrock Group, a major construction company, and the current owner of East River Partners-a seemingly respectable company-all but admitted he was working for the
Russian mafia for seven years. While managing Bayrock Group, by
his own account, he ran errands for Russian criminals involved in real
estate and construction in New York and Florida. In doing so, he was
using money from a criminal cash stash. The
criminals dubbed Jody-who graduated from the
prestigious Wharton Business School-”Vorton”
or “Wharton-v-zakone”, which is a play on
“vor-v-zakone” in Russian. This translates as
“thief-in-law”, “kingpin”, or “made-man”. All
of this has been confirmed via court papers filed
in New York as well as in many credible media
outlets such as the New York Post.
The large number of lawsuits filed because
of Jody Kriss’ illicit and often outright criminal
activities is unambiguously and publicly docuJody Kriss
mented. Excerpts from lawsuits clearly show
that Jody Kriss found it perfectly acceptable to
use direct extortion (as cited from a lawsuit: “…
accusation of using Mafiosi tactics in order to
get his share from real estate deals”) and blackmail (as cited from a lawsuit: “…the defendant
forced the Cornblit family to move out of the
apartment with a newborn baby, which endangered the baby’s life…”). Kriss ended up paying
these victims $1.6 million to drop the charges.
In one of the other lawsuits Kriss filed, he
even fraudulently used the memory of Holocaust victims (as cited from a lawsuit: “the
defendant, without being authorized to do so,
spoke on behalf of those who had died in concentration camps, demanding financial compensation…”) in an attempt
to extort money from a business associate.
One of Kriss’ shady ex-partners is still wanted by the Moscow DA’s
office for financial and tax fraud. Another partner of his, a twiceconvicted racketeer, stated in an interview that Kriss covered up his
many illegal activities and acted as a front man for the criminal world.
The racketeer expressed his surprise at how cheaply Jody Kriss agreed
not only to sell out, but also to bring his father Ron Kriss, a prominent
attorney, into the scheme saying “I thought Wharton boys were more
expensive to buy off”.
Kriss’ third partner was arrested for pimping …that also led to a lawsuit. Jody Kriss’ fourth partner, a well-known mafia associate, requested
protection from the FBI because Jody Kriss had turned to a dangerous
mafia organization known as the Persico or Colombo crime family for
“help”. The head of the Persico family is Carmine “The Snake” Persico,
a prominent mafia capo, who was sentenced in 1987 to 139 years in
prison.
The kind of “help” that only a mafia organization could provide,
which involved eliminating a mutual enemy of both the Persicos and
Kriss. Jody Kriss and his legal team of Frederick M. Oberlander and
Richard E. Lerner used stolen court documents. These sealed files,
which were stolen by another associate of Kriss, proved that one of his
ex-partners had assisted the FBI and U.S. Justice Department and was
willing to testify against members of the Persico criminal organization.
Kriss delivered copies of this deadly information to attorneys for the
Persico crime family …potentially inciting the murder of his ex-partner.
Some people use the courts to resolve disputes, and some use the mafia.
However, this is only the beginning of Jody
Kriss’ connection to criminals and gangsters. In
digging deeper into this story information was
uncovered from several former CIS countries
District Attorneys’offices that are investigating money-laundering
channels used to move large amounts of money from those countries
to the USA. The names of Semion Mogilevich, Vyacheslav Ivankov aka
“Yaponchik”, Aslan Usoyan aka Grandpa Hassan, and other notorious
post-Soviet criminal kingpins, including Victor Wolf-currently on the
FBI’s Most Wanted list for massive real estate fraud-were found to appear next to Jody Kriss’ name.
According to some Ukrainian sources, the anti-corruption committee of Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (Ukrainian parliament) is
conducting an investigation to try and retrieve funds stolen by former
Ukrainian president, Victor Yanukovich. It is
believed that Jody Kriss invested some of that
money in U.S. real estate. It is known that,
in recent years, Kriss visited both Russia and
the Ukraine where, according to the official
investigators, he had meetings and was photographed with criminal kingpins. Predictably,
the Ukrainian authorities are investigating
Jody Kriss’activities in an attempt to recoup
the money Yanukovich pilfered.
According to the website of the New York
Attorney General, publicly filed documents

reveal in Courthouse News that Jody Kriss
fronted for and hid his criminal partners on a
number of large real estate transactions.
Presently, there are also several scandals
associated with his current company East
River Partners, breaching not only construction, but health and human standards as well.
(Citations from the lawsuits: “…During the
repair works at the apartment, it was found
that the walls had been initially painted with
lead containing paint…Dept. of Environmental Protection issued a construction stop work
order on a residential building due to multiple
breaches of construction regulations…The
defendant has been warned many times about
non-compliance with construction norms and safety regulations…).
Nevertheless, Jody Kriss’ company, East River Partners, appears to
be thriving. This raises an obvious question: If a real estate developer
was caught having connections to the mafia, and had to leave his former
company-whether by choice or otherwise-where does he get the money
to start a new company? He would obviously need a large amount of
investment capital. However, having earned a “Mafioso” reputation, it
would be very difficult to find reliable and, more importantly, legitimate investors in the U.S. So where did the money come from?
Jody Kriss is known for his constant litigation with individuals such
as Donald and Ivanka Trump, as well as major real estate companies
such as CIM Group, iStar Financial, and even law firms. He and his legal team are currently trying to sue dozens of people an Source: http://

amount he apparently desperately needs. But so far, Kriss has not profited a single penny from his numerous lawsuits.
Kriss’ current financial backing must come from other sources,
which, in turn, poses the question that journalists and law enforcement
agencies in the U.S. and other countries are trying to answer.

Bacon And Beer Classic
When the Mets are away, the people will play. Thousands of bacon and craft beer
aficionados flocked to Citi Field this past Saturday for the second year of Cannonball Productions’ New York City Bacon & Beer Classic. Bacon and beer lovers got to
munch on a cornucopia of pork-based grub from pork belly to bacon-wrapped burgers to chocolate and bacon grease covered cheesecake balls. Ottomanelli’s Burgers
in Woodside and Queens Brewery were some of the home Borough favorites among
hundreds of other restaurants, food trucks and brewers from the Metropolitan area.
There was also an oversized game of Jenga for patrons to enjoy.

Fresh Air Fund In Flushing
Fresh Air Fund representatives and community members gathered at the YWCA of
Queens to kick-off efforts aimed at giving more children in Flushing enriching Fresh
Air experiences, free of charge. Joined by the YWCA of Queens Executive Director
Helen Kim, the Fresh Air Fund’s Executive Director Jenny Morgenthau discussed its
initiatives to reach out to new immigrant groups, and Korean, Mandarin and Spanish
translators were on hand to provide program and registration information to guests.

Arbor Fest At The Queens Botanical Garden

Last Sunday, the Queens Botanical
Garden had its annual Arbor Fest, featuring hours of live music, a petting zoo,
food tents and trucks, face-painting and
tables full of helpful materials, toys and
handcrafted items.
While visitors enjoyed the beautiful blossoms and the birdsongs in one
part of the garden, at 43-50 Main St.,
others were listening to the rock band
Reprimand in another part. They played
fast-paced favorites like “Hound Dog”,
“Soul Man” and “Twist and Shout”. As
adults strolled in the sunshine amidst
budding magnolia trees and banks of
daffodils, kids enjoyed the adorable
antics of real “kids” -baby goats - angora
rabbits, a llama, chickens and ducks,
plus a hamster and a guinea pig from
John Bowne High School’s agricultural
classes.
Corn on the cob was particularly
popular, while the crepe and empanada
stands and ice cream vendors did brisk
business as well.
Laughing children were everywhere,
having their faces adorned
with flowers and stripes,
playing with feathered bird
marionettes and toys that
shot streams of tiny bubbles,
taking pony rides and bouncing in the bouncy houses.
When the music played, many
danced with their parents or
grandparents.
The Garden is everyone’s

now that various trees and
shrubs around the grounds
are filled with pink, white and
yellow blossoms and Spring
flowers are blooming.

Musician Of Queens: The Good Morning Nags

The Good Morning Nags are a
Queens- and Brooklyn-based band who
stand out in “a world of pop-chaos,” as
they put it, with stomping American
roots music that is steeped in history
and knowledge of the genre.
Band members Britt Reagan, Tim
Hassler, Titus Tompkins, Mark Spitznagel and Ben Quinn hail from Astoria
and Sunnyside, as well as Brooklyn. The
Good Morning Nags met at Indiana’s
University of Evansville, first writing
and performing together for a play set
in the Appalachian Mountains. According to Reagan, about half of their
repertoire is covers, half is written in a
collaborative process.
“A song is never finished until
we’ve all added our own ingredients,”
Reagan said.
Much of the band’s work involves
arranging traditional folks or Irish
fiddle tunes, and the band likes to mix
in standards for fans.
“We like our audiences to feel like
they are a part of the show,” Reagan said.
“And when they recognize a song, it’s like
an inside joke between them and us.”
“What draws us to roots music is
just that - it’s our roots, our heritage,”
he added. “There’s such a remarkable
history to folk and bluegrass music.
These are songs that gave comfort and
enjoyment to soldiers during the civil
war, and the fact that they are still relevant and accessible to folks today is
really special.”
“There’s a humility and connection
to it that is so refreshing in a world of
pop-chaos,” Reagan continued. “The
music has such wonderful stories
behind it, and people like to be a part
of that.”

instrumentation includes guitar, banjo,
mandolin and fiddle, as well as kazoo,
spoons and washboard.
“Above all, we want audiences to
enjoy our music and have fun with us
while they listen,” Reagan said. “We
want them to hear the stories and
feel that connection like we do. And
if they don’t, then they should still be
stomping their feet and clapping their
hands!”

On July 16, the Lyricist Lounge “Live

Terriers’ Twin Tennis Titans Play For Last Year

St. Francis Prep High School will lose two key
players when graduation comes this June. In fact,
they won’t even be together again next year.
One of them is trying very hard to continue
to make it big one day in tennis, while the other
is playing tennis for the fun of it, more for recreation.
Douglas Nover, a senior at St. Francis Prep,
already committed to continue his education and
tennis at St. Peter’s College in New Jersey. His twin
brother Dan Nover has committed to St. John’s
University, staying closer to home. Dan may try
out for the tennis team as a walk-on once in college.
According to NCAA regulations, a student
must commit by May 1. Right now their concern
is to graduate and lead their high school to a team
championship.
Last year, Fordham Prep defeated St. Francis
Prep and won the team title of the Catholic High
Schools Athletic Association.
Now the Terriers want to take it back.
Last Monday in a dual team match, the Terriers turned back rivals Archbishop Molloy, 5-0,
winning all three singles matches and two doubles
ones.
Doug Nover had an easy match, and defeated
Dan and Douglas Nover
Alex Rezhits of Molloy, 6-0, 6-0 at singles on a
slightly windy afternoon at Alley Pond Park.
The key to the singles match was keeping his
serves in play.
In doubles competition, Dan Nover teamed
with Reno Cattabiani to defeat Molloy, 6-1, 6-1.
In his fourth year on the team, Doug Nover
broke serve at the outset of the match, and had it
easy the rest of the way.
Doug, who is ranked 266 in
the East, is 4-0 in singles matches at press time, previously defeating Fordham Prep, Iona Prep
and Molloy. He used to playing
in tournaments, but now is focusing heavily on high school
tennis.
As for college, Doug liked the
campus at St. Peter’s and felt that
he would fit right in. He credits
his high school success to his high
school coach John Brennan. Outside of high school he credits his
success to Eric Rebhuhn and to
some of his teammates.
“Brennan helped me develop,
to become more calm, and be consistent,” Doug said.
He still has to work on all
parts of his game, while getting ready for college.
“After this current season it’ll be different to
split up from my brother,” he added.
The two brothers will have to adjust.
“The goal now is to win the regular season
team title and do well in the Mayor’s Cup,” they
said. “We’ll have to be consistent and have great
concentration.”

USACricketers.com unveiled its
new website look, originally hosted
under newyorkcricket.com. The
change was make to reflect what it
was doing on newyorkcricket.com,
but now under a domain name that
reflects and covers all of U.S. cricket
and beyond. The site owners’ previous domain name reflected national
coverage to a much lesser extent.
Changing the domain name and
expanding coverage was a simple
task, because of reports, stories and
contributions from many across the
United States.
The site hosts some of the U.S.’s
most well-known cricket contributors and writers, and no one takes
you closer to the U.S. cricket scene
than them. The site encourages contributors to continue to help cricket
move forward, and welcomes new
contributors and suggestions.
From their analytics the site
determined that local coverage
and stories were overwhelmingly
in demand, meaning they were the
most read stories in comparison
to international news. Those facts
helped USACricketers.com’s webmaster make the move to the wider
coverage of the sport in the United
States.

last year.
