April 2015 NEWS FROM RAND CLUB Reciprocal News Events Club News A message from the Chairman David Williams. Dear Members As noted in my recent previous messages, we continue to work with our Food & Beverage partners Umlumzani to improve efficiency and to enhance the offering for Members. As you can see from the content of this newsletter, the Club has been very active and more events are planned. Please support the Club, and I draw your attention to the benefits outlined below that are available to Members - in particular the discount on travel with Rovos Rail. David Williams Chairman Rand Club Quiz League The great success of our quiz nights has led to the creation of our very own quiz league. Four quiz evenings will be held this year and each team’s top three scores are tallied to determine the winners at the end of the year. Quiz master, Larry Benjamin, puts the teams to the test with challenging questions and tasks. Brisk competition is encouraged and friendly rivalry between existing teams has led to enthusiastic anticipation of the next event. Although the teams participate mainly for bragging rights, we have, to date, had generous prizes donated by PAST Experiences, The Market Theatre, SAB World of Beer, Johannesburg In Your Pocket, Just Brewing Craft Beer, Johannesburg Theatre, Joburg Hop on- Hop off Sightseeing Bus and Bidvest. It’s not too late join the Members Quiz League 2015. Current league champions, the Winning Winos are only 7 points ahead of the Dutch Rudders, followed in third place by the Marchionesses of Triomph. Congratulations to our non-Members team, Cranium Crushers, who are placed second on the board. Our next Quiz Whizz takes place on Thursday, 28 May 2015. Look out for details on our website and notice board. What you missed in March Newtown tour, 14 March Jo Buitendach of P.A.S.T Experiences led an intrepid group of Rand Club Members and their guests on a walking tour of Newtown Precinct on Saturday, 14 March 2015. After a sobering visit to the Worker’s Museum we headed for Newtown Precinct where we had a chance to enjoy some of the activities of the Newtown Festival. The highlight of the walk was a viewing of Johannesburg’s lesser known street art, produced by some of the most talented graffiti artists in the country. Black Oystercatcher Wine and Food Pairing, 19 March Another enjoyable wine and food pairing with an informative and entertaining presenter, generous amounts of impressive wines, a well paired and delicious meal and a lively and interactive crowd. Warm thanks to Owen MacDonald, the Black Oystercatcher representative, for a job well done. The event, capped at 34 attendees, was a sold out success. The next wine tasting event is a De Krans port tasting on 21 May. Please book early to avoid disappointment. This business club is the oldest business networking group for individuals in Namibia. The Windhoek Club has its origins in the old United Service Club which began in 1918 shortly after the surrender of the Deutsch Suedwest Afrika territory to the union forces of South Africa. "A strong desire arose amongst those who passed muster for the army of occupation that something should be done in the way of establishing a rendezvous, wherein they could foregather and read the English papers, rest their weary limbs, or play a game of cards or billiards." wrote the Windhuk Advertiser in 1969 in a golden jubilee edition commemorating the newspaper's fiftieth anniversary. Over the first fifty years of the club's existence, the Windhoek Advertiser was published as the "Official Organ of the United Service Club." . The name was subsequently changed to the Windhoek Club which is still its official name today. The Windhoek Club is located next to the Maerua Mall in Windhoek, where they have shared premises with the Alte Feste Lions Club for some years, and their facilities include a Club House Bar, Snooker Room and a Garden Court Yard entertainment area. The club boasts the oldest snooker table in the country, and on and around this table, many fables were spun, and many contracts were sealed. They presently have thirty two Country and Permanent Members and often have temporary Members who visit Namibia on business. They share reciprocity with The Swakopmund Club. After 97 years, the Windhoek Club is still going strong with weekly meetings at the Club House which are attended by well-known names in the Windhoek business fraternity. Book of the month AUGUSTUS – from Revolutionary to Emperor by Adrian Goldsworthy Review done by Ivor Sander The book paints a vivid picture of the violent, bloody chaos of the Roman state immediately after Caesar’s assassination in 44BC. With a wealth of anecdotes it shows the remarkable personal qualities of Octavius which enabled him to rise to supreme power and general popularity in extremely unpleasant, hostile and hazardous circumstances. It goes on to show how his skills as an instinctive leader of men and one of history’s great administrators, inaugurated The Pax Romana, which freed the western world from large-scale conflict for nearly two centuries. Augustus was most certainly a complex man. In the early stages of his public career, while still a highly ambitious youth of 18, he was as pitiless and bloodthirsty as any competing warlord in the political arena. With no other assets than his adoptive name and the allegiance of his great-uncle’s still-loyal legions (which he took care to secure by paying them hefty bonuses) he steadily advanced his power. Although he continued to monopolise the control of state power, remaining in effect a military dictator, he took great care to retain the outward forms of republican government. Rejecting offers of monarchical titles, he preferred to call himself Princeps Civitatis – “First Citizen of the State” It is an unfailingly engrossing and instructive story. The decision to rename four streets in downtown Joburg was taken by the Mayoral Council in September 2014. The move is supported by the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation, a community-based organisation that has been a watchdog over the preservation of the City's rich history for more than three decades. The renaming initiative gained momentum last year when the Freedom of the City was awarded to four activists who played prominent roles in the struggle for democracy and led the well-known Women's March to the Union Buildings in Pretoria in 1956. • Bree Street has been renamed to Lilian Ngoyi Street. Ngoyi was a textile worker and mother of three from Orlando who joined the liberation struggle at an early age and rose to become the Secretary General of the ANC Women's League and National Chairman of the Federation of South African Women. Her outspoken defiance against the injustices of apartheid resulted in her being charged with high treason, banned and placed under house arrest. She remained a beacon of strength to the liberation movement up to her death in 1980. • Jeppe Street has been named after community activist, Rahima Moosa. From humble beginnings as a worker in a canning factory and with little formal education this formidable woman was a guiding influence on the struggle for freedom struggle for more than five decades. As a member of the Transvaal Indian Congress she led the initiatives to unite the liberation movement and to mobilise workers into effective and powerful trade unions. • President Street is now known as Helen Joseph Street. Joseph was an indomitable fighter for freedom and justice for more than six decades. As a founding member of the Congress of Democrats she was a major organiser of the Congress of the People in Kliptown in 1955 where the Freedom Charter was adopted as the guiding document for the liberation struggle. Decades of banning and house arrests and repeated assassination attempts could not silence her voice and she remained a powerful political force until her passing in 1992. • Sauer Street has been renamed to Pixley ka Isaka Seme Street. Pixley ka Isaka Seme was one of the founders of the African National Congress and later served as its President (1930 – 1936). He had a law degree from Oxford University and was the first black lawyer to practice in South Africa where he served as a mentor to a number of young activists who later played key roles in the liberation struggle. He died in Johannesburg in 1951. • Noord Street becomes Sophie de Bruyn Street, named after the only living leader of the Women's March. As a founding member of the South African Congress of Trade Unions and a full-time organiser of the Coloured People's Congress she played a critical role in mobilising communities to protest against injustice. She continued to serve a democratic South Africa through vital contributions as a Member of Parliament, Deputy Speaker of the Gauteng Legislature and member of the Commission on Gender Equality. In terms of the Council's decisions dual signage containing both old and new names will be retained for a maximum of 12 months to enable members of the community to familiarise themselves with the changes. Maps and street addresses will be changed during this period and modern technology will support the transition on GPS and internet platforms. 7 Rand Club Offer 13-nights Mediterranean Tapestry cruise package onboard Ms Nieuw Amsterdam.
