Prior to that, he was a reporter, editorial writer and editor at the Baltimore Sun, the Chicago Tribune, the Lexington (Ky.) Herald-Leader and the KnightRidder Washington Bureau, where he covered the U.S. Supreme Court from 20032007. Henderson's work has been honored with more than a dozen national awards, including the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for commentary and the 2014 Scripps Howard Award for Commentary. Henderson hosts a weekly talk show, "American Black Journal," cohosts the weekly news wrap-up show "MiWeek," both on Detroit Public Television, and hosts Detroit Today on WDET-Public Radio 101.9 FM. “Assuring all adults read at a minimum proficiently is absolutely necessary to our region’s economic and social growth,” explains Henderson.
