Stephen Henderson joins Reading Works Board
Detroit, March 23, 2015 - Today Paul Anger, Chair of the Reading Works Board of
Directors announced that Stephen Henderson, Editorial Page Editor for the Detroit
Free Press, has joined the Reading Works Board. “Stephen is an important voice for
education and literacy in our region,” says Anger. “We are excited to have him join
our mission to raise adult literacy in metro Detroit.”
Henderson is a native and current resident of Detroit, and has been with the Free
Press since 2009. Prior to that, he was a reporter, editorial writer and editor at the
Baltimore Sun, the Chicago Tribune, the Lexington (Ky.) Herald-Leader and the KnightRidder Washington Bureau, where he covered the U.S. Supreme Court from 20032007. Henderson's work has been honored with more than a dozen national awards,
including the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for commentary and the 2014 Scripps Howard Award
for Commentary. Henderson hosts a weekly talk show, "American Black Journal," cohosts the weekly news wrap-up show "MiWeek," both on Detroit Public Television,
and hosts Detroit Today on WDET-Public Radio 101.9 FM.
“Assuring all adults read at a minimum proficiently is absolutely necessary to our
region’s economic and social growth,” explains Henderson. Paula Brown, Executive
Director of Reading Works adds, “We are honored to have Mr. Henderson join our
board to help us build greater support around this critical issue.”
