Easter on Corfu - Described by two local writers
By now, there can be few
regular visitors to Corfu who
do not know that the Easter
celebrations of the island are
unique and memorable. As for
the residents of this beautiful
and hospitable place, Easter is
looked forward to with great
anticipation every year,
representing as it does, for
most of us, an end to winter
gloom and a new beginning.
A blend of pagan and Christian
traditions, a time for
extravagant eating and
drinking, an immensely
colourful display, accompanied
by wonderful music – where
else would you want to be?
All eyes are focused on the
town of Corfu, where the
events of Holy Week reach a
climax with the mourning
processions on Good Friday,
with flower decorated biers
carried around the boundaries
of the various parishes,
accompanied by church
dignitaries, banners and icons.
In the town, the most
spectacular of these
processions take place later in
the evening and wind through
the narrow streets together
with the Philharmonic bands
and church choirs, watched by
hordes of visitors from all parts
of the island itself as well as
from further afield. There is
much to see and listen to,
traditions that date back to
Venetian times and a
programme of music that
represents the diversity of
Corfu's rich musical heritage.
Saturday brings more
processions, more music,
revived traditions, and then
there is a lull as people gather
to chat quietly, observing a
kind of fast, preparing
themselves for the spectacular
declaration of the Resurrection,
at midnight. Fireworks streak
across the sky and then
everyone retires to home, hotel
or taverna to break the Easter
fasting with plates of
Mayeritsa, the aromatic and
satisfying soup eaten only at
Easter, accompanied by
numerous other delicious
dishes. The first of the scarlet
eggs, hard-boiled and dyed on
the previous Thursday, will be
cracked for luck,
Time eventually for a sleep,
though the men designated to
cook the lamb or goat on the
spit (it's always men!), must
make do with very little sleep.
It takes time to dress the meat
and get it on the spit and
prepare the charcoal for the
fire (if we are being
traditional), and an early start
needs to be made if the meat is
to be cooked perfectly. There are
always plenty of volunteers willing
to risk their fingers by pulling off a
piece of the sizzling meat to test its
readiness!
Easter in Corfu is characterised by
the fact that despite the immense
crowds that gather in the centre of
the town to observe the
celebrations, the atmosphere is
one of good humour and
hospitality. There is only one event
during these days that could be
misconstrued by the ill-prepared
visitor – the famous 'Pot Smashing
Ceremony'.
At 11pm on Good Saturday,
the villagers of each village gather
at their local church. The children
hold decorative candles and
lanterns while the adults carry
large plain candles. Each candle is
lit from the holy flame, which
comes direct from Jesus’ tomb. This
flame travels around Greece and
lights every candle around the
country. Again, a procession with
candles, led by the priest, travels
lamb, which has been cooking all
morning on a spit over an open fire.
Some villagers prefer to leave the
lamb for Monday and instead feast on
(avgolemono) egg, lemon and rice
soup.

ends at the local church where the
priest says a prayer and
blesses everyone. At 12 o’clock, the
church bells ring out; once the
priest cries out ‘Christos
Anesti’ (Christ has risen),
fireworks, gunfire, and loud bombs
are let off. Everyone goes around
kissing and shaking hands,
wishing neighbours, friends and
family, a happy Easter. At least
one candle must remain lit, so the
sign of the cross can be burnt above
the front door of the home.
During the warm sunny days of
Easter, you will find the cafes full of
Greeks sipping frappes and iced
cappuccinos. In the evening, tavernas
and nightclubs open their doors after
11pm for bouzoukia (live Greek
music) where the Greeks dance and
drink until the early hours.
Back inside the house, the family
feast on Magiritsa, a soup made
from lamb’s intestine. Dyed, hardboiled eggs decorate the dinner
table as the family competes to
smash each other’s egg.

At precisely 11.00 on Easter
Saturday morning, hundreds of
clay pots of all sizes from medium
to massive, part-filled with water,
are hurled enthusiastically from
windows and balconies in the town
centre to smash satisfyingly at the
feet of the onlookers. Greeks love
to break things when they are
happy, and what better excuse
could they have than this event
that has come to typify the Easter
spirit of Corfu?

For the Greeks, Easter is not just
about chocolate eggs, although
there are more appearing in the
shops every year.
The Greeks live by their religion
(Greek Orthodox) so Easter is one
of their biggest holidays.
Every town and city has their own
traditions, but the beautiful Island
of Corfu, where I have lived for
over 22 years, is famous for it’s
Easter.
Thousands of Greeks, as well as
foreigners, travel to Corfu for the
unique celebrations.
For forty days, traditional Greeks
will fast, leaving meat, eggs, milk,
cheese, and sweets from their diet.
The rest of the country fast on
Wednesday and Fridays, but all
will diet for the last week before
Easter.
Lefkimmi is one of the largest
villages on the Island. The first of
the numerous parades begins
when the sun goes down on Good
Friday. Villagers dressed in black,
congregate at the local church.
Carrying lighted candles, they
walk around the village while a
band plays a funeral march. A
wooden cross and religious icons
lead the parade, while the priest
and local villagers join up for the
candle mass. Windowsills and
balconies are lit up with tealight
candles, making the narrow village
lanes look magical. Even though
the parade represents the funeral
of Christ, and the villagers are in
mourning, it is an incredible sight.
The atmosphere, although somber,
is awe-inspiring.
Easter dinner is fresh roasted
Early Monday morning, each church
in Lefkimmi has mass, and then the
congregation leaves with their church
flag. As the assembly walks through
the village, other churches with their
priests and flags join in the parade.

hundreds of villagers,
all dressed in their
finery. At 12 o’clock,

amazing place. Easter is
exceptionally breath-taking. With
flowers in bloom, and the freshly
painted white-washed walls, you will
fall in love with the beauty of the
Island. With unique traditions and
countless celebrations, Easter in
Corfu is an experience you will never
forget.

The views along the north west coast of

All of the buildings in the square have been recently
painted in traditional Corfu colours of deep
pink, terracotta and yellow. However, as you walk up
the winding streets of the village, the colours
change to mostly blue and white and the houses take
on the appearance of those commonly found
in the Cyclades.
Afionas is known locally as the green village or
garden village, as there are so many flowers that
adorn the houses there. The main event of the year is
the festival dedicated to the
church of Saint John on the 24th of June.

Beyond Corfu - Ioannina
The beautiful city of Ioannina (pronounced
Yo-an-nina) lies approximately 48 miles
east of the port of
Igoumenitsa . The
drive takes just
over an hour once
you have reached
the Greek
mainland, on good
roads, making this
an easy
destination for a
day out or a
weekend away
from Corfu.
What to see
Much of modern
day Ioannina, a
thriving
university
city,
was developed by
ambitious
town
planners in the
1960s. However,
the old town remains largely intact and is a
‘must see’ for any visitor. Located on the
west shore of Lake Pamvotidha, on a rocky
promontory jutting out into the water, its
spectacular fortifications punctuated by
minarets make it one of the most unique old
towns in Greece. From this stronghold, Ali
Pasha carved out a semi-autonomous
fiefdom that encompassed much of Western
Greece and present day Albania.

The old bazaar and Jewish quarter is a
warren of narrow lanes, which retain a

Ali Pasha’s citadel ‘The Kastro’ survives
largely intact and is a fascinating place to
visit. Don’t miss the inner citadel, where Ali
Pasha’s decapitated body is entombed.

mostly around the Kastro walls, lakeside
and in the Jewish quarter.

ranging from low budget to five star.

always required and significant winter

is location. We want to arrive and dump
the car so the three hotels recommended
below have been chosen with that
requirement in mind:
Blow the budget
Grand Serai Hotel and Spa (address: Dodonis 33,
tel: 26510 90550). A superb five star hotel with full
spa facilities, parking and free wifi within walking
distance of all the major attractions. Excellent
staff and plentiful buffet style breakfast.
Mid range
Hotel Kastro (address: Andhronikou, Paleologou
57, tele: 26510 22866). A three star hotel in a
fantastic location in the Kastro near the Ottoman
library. This is a tastefully restored inn with just
seven bedrooms. Good breakfast. On road parking
is available. Free wifi.
Kind to the pocket
Bretania Hotel (address: Dimokratias Square 11a,
tele: 26510 26380). A two star hotel on a busy road
within walking distance of all the main
attractions. Surprisingly quiet despite the location.
Free underground parking across the street, free
wifi and a good breakfast served in a delightful
adjoining patisserie shop. Good value budget hotel.
And finally, did you know – Ikea, Jumbo, H&M
and a sports supermarket can be found on the
approaches to Ioannina. There is also a Praktika
(DIY store) and a very large Carrefour selling
much more than food!

Animals on Corfu
The Story of Μπαρμπιλι
( Barbili) from Igoumenitsa
On February 24th Justine Lawson
posted on the Corfu Grapevine
Facebook page a photo of a dog
that had been in the Moraitika
area of Corfu for a few days – lots
of people commented and tried to
establish if the dog was owned or
a new stray in the area.
On 26th February Vicky Zafeiri
saw a post on the Kivotos
Facebook page that a dog of the
same description was missing
from Igoumenitsa in mainland
Greece where the ferries from
Corfu go to and from. Vicky did
some research on the Igoumenitsa
animal welfare group and found
the dog was indeed from
Igoumenitsa and had a microchip
so if necessary this could provide
the confirmation. Vicky
communicated with the owners
who were overjoyed to know their
family member had been found.
Justine and her husband Lee
went out in the dark to find
Barbili and took him home with
them to keep him secure until the
owner could come over to Corfu
the following day.
On 27th February after 2 weeks of
being missing, dog and owner
were reunited in a tearful and
happy reunion – see photo above.
The owner had offered a reward of
500 Euros for the return of his
beloved pet and Justine donated
this money to animal charities on
the island. A big thank you to all
those who helped reunite Barbili
with his owner and especially to
Justine for posting the photo of
him in the first place and for her
generosity in donating the reward
money to charity. This story is
being told to show what can
happen when people care and
work together for a positive
outcome and to highlight that
microchipping is very important.

Microchipping of Pets in
Greece
In Greece it is a legal requirement
that pets must be microchipped.
In Greek law the term used for
pets is companion animals.
Microchipping serves different
purposes, for example
1. .An animal can be identified and
returned to its owner should it
become lost
2. It prevents someone stealing an
animal and saying it belongs to them.
3. It records the animal for
transportation purposes alongside
the rabies vaccination which for dogs
is also a legal yearly requirement in
Greece
.
Here is the English translation of
the relevant section of the law:
Law No: 4039/2012/Article4/Section
3. a) : Microchipping of each
companion animal is mandatory,
with the exception of dogs used as
guardians of flocks, for which is it
considered optional, under the
condition that they do not participate
in genetic improvement programs in
order to improve and stabilise certain
breeds. The costs of microchipping
and registering of owned companion
animals shall be borne by their owner
and that of stray companion animals

microchipping directly from the
market.
Microchipping costs around 25 to 40
euros and then the microchip is
registered to a database in Athens.
The microchip is now referred to as a
transponder on the new passports
being issued since 29th December
2014.
The usual place that the microchip is
inserted in Greece is the left side of
the neck/ left shoulder. When a
microchip is inserted the vet will
check it with a reader – last time I
had a dog microchipped the vet
checked the microchip with the
reader before inserting it into the
dog's neck. When checking for a
microchip on an animal found on the
streets – the reader is swept over the
area and then all around the neck
and shoulder area as microchips have
been known to move. The microchip
is about the size of a grain of rice and
under normal circumstances

in place. It is important to check
your pet's microchip with a scanner
on a yearly basis at the pet's annual
health check and always before
travelling abroad with your pet.

Lefkimmi Animal Rescue Centre
The Lefkimmi Animal Rescue Shelter
was established 15 years ago. The
shelter is always full to overflowing.

sometimes daily, we will arrive at the
shelter to find yet another dog tied to our
gates or thrown over the fence..We are in
the process of having a CCTV system
installed so we have evidence of the
perpetrators.
Many are pregnant or have lifelong
illnesses which need immediate attention.
This is difficult considering our closest vet
is in Corfu Town. We cannot just ignore
the dogs abandoned at the shelter, so we
take them in. This is how we have gained
the majority of our dogs.
DOG OF THE MONTH
The shelter is comprised of 29 outside
pens with kennels and a 3 room puppy
house.
We currently have 3 full time volunteers
and 1 part time volunteer, however this
will change in May when we say goodbye
to the founder of the shelter Marjorie
Pandi.
When I first volunteered she told me, “I
started rescuing dogs & cats because I
couldn’t look the other way anymore”.
Marjorie has saved over 3000 dogs in the
15 years the shelter has been open and
many cats too. Due to her retirement we
now need to find homes for these cats too.

has devoted
so much
time and
passion into
a selfless
cause. She
will be
dearly missed. We would like to take this
opportunity to wish her the best of luck in
her retirement and also thank her on
behalf of the thousands of dogs she has
saved over the years.

and was found entangled in
brambles in a river bed in
muddy water and was lucky to
survive. She was rescued and
taken to a place of safety where
she is temporarily until a more
permanent solution can be
found.

yellow color is a pretty addition to any table. It
can be served as an appetizer, meze, or a side
dish. Fava goes particularly well with dark leafy
greens, salty dishes, and fish. Look for the peas
at a Greek grocer, or try an Indian market and
look for yellow daal (moong).







1 3/4 cups of yellow split peas
4 1/3 cups of water
1 tablespoon of sea salt
2 tablespoons of olive oil

Preparation
Put the peas in a pot with water to cover generously. Bring to a boil and cook 5-10
minutes until froth rises to the top. Drain the peas and rinse well.
In a pressure cooker, add the 4 1/3 cups water and peas. Bring to a boil, seal, and when
pressure reached, reduce heat to low and cook for 10 minutes. Use fast-release of pressure, and open the pot.
Purée the peas and liquid in a food processor bowl, and return to the pot. Add oil and
salt. Cook uncovered over lowest possible heat for 15 minutes until it becomes the
texture of thick cream, stirring with a wooden spoon to prevent from sticking.
Serve at room temperature in shallow bowls topped off with olive oil and a tablespoon
of diced onion.
