Early Years Open Morning
Parents should have letters for the Tombola, IDP /
Second Hand, Food and Commercial Stalls. Well
done to all the children who have started bringing
in things for the Tombola and IDP / Second Hand
Stall. Please ask your child if you have not yet
seen the letter as plans are well on their way for
our annual Fun Day Celebrations taking place on
Saturday 6th June 2015. It promises to be yet
another exciting day so make a note of the date in
your diaries.
On Thursday 14th May 2015 the Early Years
Department will be opening its doors to
prospective parents. There will be an informative
talk about the Early Years Foundation Stage
Curriculum
and learning
styles. Parents
will then be
able to visit
the Playgroup
to see the
session
in
progress.
Please pass on the word to friends with children of
two – three years of age and help us to show off
our impressive Early Years Department. We meet
in the school hall at 9.30am and finish at 12noon.

Year 5 Life Cycle
Year One Outing
As part of the Science topic ‘Growing Plants’ in
Year 1 for this term, we went on a field trip to
Transcorp Hilton’s Plant Nursery. In order to give
the children a practical experience and
understanding of how plants are grown and the uses
we make of plants. The children had a fun and
educational learning experience.
On
Thursday
morning, all three
Year 5 classes
attended a very
interesting,
thorough
and
stimulating talk by
Dr Maiyaki on
‘Life
Cycles’,
charting the various
stages that we all,
as human beings,
travel through during our lives, starting with
when we were babies.
“I saw a house made of plants, I went inside the
Greenhouse and I saw very beautiful plants. I also
planted a plant. I felt excited and had lots of fun.”
Adhira Shekar 1A
“I saw plants and the manager told us their names.
He also told us how to grow a plant.”
Khadijah Y. Kassim 1A
At the end of the lecture, the children asked
many questions, showing clearly that Dr
Maiyaki’s talk had given them a lot to think
about. Her previous lecture to the Year 5’s took
place
last
October on
‘Healthy
Eating’. Our
grateful
thanks goes
to Dr Maiyaki
for giving up
her precious
time yet again
to talk to the
children.
2S Class Assembly - "The Great Fire of London
1666"
Despite the rain that was falling outside, this did
not dampen the activity that was taking place in the
Hall.
The fire had a disastrous effect because it spread so
quickly because all the houses were made of wood
and were crammed together so closely. A huge area of London was burnt as a consequence.
2S delivered a super assembly on the "Great Fire of
London 1666'. I wish most history lessons were
delivered in this way as I am convinced more
children would remember the details and the events
clearer.
The boys and
girls dressed
up in period
costumes and
retold the story
using
both
modern aids
and a historical
narrative
which
was
delivered by
the
narrator
and
Samuel
Pepys.
Sometimes, disasters bring about good, believe it
or not. The Great Fire of London did help to curtail
The Great Plague in London of 1665 by driving or
killing the rats which were believed to be the
carriers of the disease causing this plague and also
the plague of 1349, the Bubonic Plague. In addition. lessons were learnt about building houses.
Many were now built with more stone as opposed
to wood.
A huge thank you to the teachers and the children
for entertaining and educating all of us in such an
interesting manner. Long live History and the more
interactive lessons we adopt, I am sure the children
will learn easily. Congratulations once again to 2S.
You are the champions and you were all really hot
on stage this morning.
5R Class Assembly
It was 5R’s turn to share their acting and dance
skills in a very entertaining, interesting and
inspiring way on the theme of ‘Hope for Nigeria’.
They did this by re - enacting a scene from a typical
Victorian classroom, where the cane was used on
naughty and unruly pupils, and all children sat in
rows, not daring to put a foot wrong! Pictures from
the visit to the Gishiri school were shown with as
many as 75 children in one class. By contrast, there
are 22 children in 5R and they all took an active
role in the Assembly from flower and pure water
sellers to current Presidents, Senators and
Governors.
It was clear from their Assembly that they had
combined what they had learnt about the Victorians
last term with a recent visit to the Gishiri Primary
School last week.
The main character ‘Hope’, portrayed her role
through dance, song and powerful acting. Well
done 5R! It was powerfully put over and gave us all
a lot to think about.
