Spring is here and summer is just weeks away! I love the heat, the colors, but most of all I relish the anticipation of lengthy, sun drenched days. Of course the end of one school year brings on thoughts of the new school year that will arrive September 2nd. The School Board has determined that next year the student day will be 8:20 to 2:50. Students will enter at 8:10 and attendance will be taken at 8:20. During the spring and summer we work on determining student placements for the new year. During the student placement process, we consider a variety of factors about each student including academic level, social and emotional development, peer relationships, and student/teacher match. We also attempt to create balanced classes that allow for building a strong classroom community. In our effort to create these balanced classes, we do consider parent input, recommendations and relative information to be valuable to the process. If you would like to provide information regarding your child’s placement, please send a letter or email to Lori Bobinsky, [email protected]. The letter should inform us about any of the following: learning style, teaching style, student strengths or weaknesses that would assist us in determining placement for your child. While we cannot honor specific teacher requests, we will make every effort to use this information in our placement considerations. Please submit requests by Monday, June 8th, 2015. June 15 4th Grade Game Show “So You Think You Know Maine”, 2pm In early August, we will notify all families regarding their child’s teacher for the upcoming school year. This will allow us adequate time to thoughtfully place students and to accommodate summer moves and registrations June 17 Awards Ceremony, 2pm If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Bobinsky or Mr. Brewster at the school (874-8175) or via email. REICHE COMMUNITY SCHOOL News from Ms. Provencher’s 4/5 Class Tales From 208 Old Fort Western First, we went to Old Fort Western. We learned about how life was like in the 1700’s. Children had to do more work than adults! For example, children had to make their parents bed, go to the neighbor’s house for buckets of water, and that meant going across a big river! In reality, a neighbor wasn’t always a close neighbor. During wartime, when the men were out on the battlefield, women had to do the men’s work too. People living at that time couldn’t just go to Walmart and buy some clothes. They had to start from scratch, making the fabric and all. We got to try out some of the chores that they did. We made butter, sliced bread, and chopped wood. I have to say, we got to experience some fun things at Old Fort Western. (I love chopping wood; after all, I am a Mainer!) My friends and I had a lot of fun and I will always remember this experience. By: Colette Van Dyke Museum of Science The trip to Boston was fantastic! It was educational and fun. Some of the things we did were to see a live animal exhibit, a lightening show, and a movie on Lewis and Clark in the Omni Theater. th Another luxury we had as 5 graders was taking a V.I.P. bus to Boston. The busses had WIFI, comfy seats, bathrooms, and a DVD player. On the way home, we also stopped at Sonic for milkshakes. th The 5 grade students would like to give a shout out to the PTO and donors from DonorsChoose.org for helping to fund this trip! Thank you!! By: Avery Douglas and Anthony Thach Are Black Bears a Threat to Humans? In class, we have been studying whether or not Maine black bears are a threat to humans or not. We read articles, watched videos, debated with each other, and wrote essays. Here are some pieces of our essays that we wrote, supporting both sides of the argument. By: Molly Wendell-Pearson Yes, They Are! I know that you are thinking that black bears are wild animals and they don’t know what they’re doing. Let me tell you that you are right. Black bears will attack randomly and viciously because they are wild, therefor black bears are a threat to humans. They are a threat because they are attracted to human food and trash. By: Liam Sommer No, They Aren’t! If you want black bears to get away from you, just make a lot of noise. They will be scared and think that you might attack them, or be getting ready to attack them. Another option would be to bluff-charge the bear. Bluff charging is when you run toward the bear (or any animal that you know will run away), and stop after the bear turns and runs. So, the next time you see an unwanted black bear, remember that you can easily scare it off. They are timid animals. By: Caspian Benedict-Murphy 2 JUNE 2015 News from Mrs. Foley’s 2nd Grade Class Second Graders are now working with Side X Side on a project called Moving Oceans. Students are researching sea creatures from the Gulf of Maine. Scientist, researcher, and author Mary Cerullo visited the classrooms for presentations and workshops to introduce the project. Students are collecting information to use to make fact cards and a non-fiction book. They will be working with artists to make line drawings. Then students will make paper mache creatures. We are also going on two related field trips, one to Scarborough Marsh and the other to Kettle Cove. We will learn about the ecosystem at the marsh and at Kettle Cove we will explore tide pools. We are excited to be working on this wonderful project and look forward to all the activities. News from Mrs. Provencher’s 4/5 Grade Class It's hard to believe that the school year is coming to an end. The students are working feverishly to finish up testing and classroom projects. The whole class has been studying WWII for literacy, researching and reading about the subject. Each student has written a research paper and participated in book clubs. It's exciting to see who enthusiastic they are about the topic. They studied Living Systems for integrated studies and now the focus is on Maine Studies for the fourth graders and U. S. Studies for the fifth graders. The fifth graders are researching a state of their choice and drawing a map for their state. All the students enjoyed their field trips to Augusta and The Science Museum in Boston. Sometimes I think their favorite part is the ice cream at the end of the trip. It was nice to have so many parents along on the Augusta Trip. Thank you to all those parents who helped out on both trips. I hope everyone has a restful and fun filled summer.
