Privacy Awareness Week
I had a conversation this week that went something like “Did you know that a lot of young
people here in Bingara and Warialda had a Facebook friend whose actual identity they did not
know. They had simply accepted the friend request”. I said I was not aware and that like them
I was alarmed by this. I did some research which led me to another schools website page and
found the following article which has some timely information for our community. I encourage
all parents to follow the advice here and to have a conversation with their children about the
hazards of accepting friend requests from people they don’t know.
Type in to your browser or follow this link http://www.ipc.nsw.gov.au/privacy/ipc_resources/
privacy_awareness_week_2014.html to the NSW Government website for more information.
Regardless of your child's age, the world may already know a lot more about them than you
suspect. According to recent research:

92% of children under the age of two have a digital presence (it starts with proud
parents posting newborn baby photos on Facebook or Instagram)
a quarter of Australian children aged between eight and 12 use Facebook, despite
the minimum age for a user being 13
more than 20 per cent of tweens publish photos of themselves on the photo-sharing

young people between the ages of 14 and 19 have an average of 453 fans, friends

Even if you don't know a lot about social media yourself, you can help your child stay safe
online simply by asking them about the social media accounts they are using, and regularly
reminding them the importance of keeping their personal information private.
The Information and Privacy Commission NSW has created a lot of practical information for
parents and children, to support 2014 Privacy Awareness Week. It includes:




security tips for parents and teens
resources to help prevent identity theft
information on cyberbullying
guides to protecting your digital reputation
information about mobile apps and the data they may collect.
You can also find a parent's guide to social media – including Kik Messenger, Instagram, Vine
and Facebook - in the School A to Z technology glossary.

PRIMARY NEWS
Primary Assembly
There will be no K-6 Assembly this Friday.
Zone Cross Country
A big congratulations to all students who travelled to Ashford last Friday for the Zone Cross Country Carnival. All
students did our school proud and looked great in their school singlets. There were some outstanding results on the
day with many of our students finishing in the top 10-15 out of fields of 60 students across 10 schools in the zone.
Erica Dixon competed exceptionally well finishing 6th in her division and being selected for regional level, which will
be held in Coolah on Friday the 13th June. Well done Erica!
Legends of League
Students from Year 6 will travel to Ashford tomorrow for the annual Legends of League day. The boys will play in a
7 a side rugby league competition and the girls will play in a 7 a side league tag competition. It is always a fun day
for the students and we wish our Year 6 students all the best.
Northern Regional Netball Trials
Well done to Erica Dixon who competed in the Northern Regional Netball trials on Monday in Inverell. She played
well and was successful in making it through to the next level. She will travel to Armidale on Monday for the North
West trials. Congratulations on another excellent achievement Erica.
Reward Day
The first Reward Day for Term 2 was held today. Congratulations to all students who qualified. Those who missed
out will need to focus more on their behaviour for the remainder of the term.
A Hard Day’s Night at the Roxy
All students were given an order form for the Beatles T-shirt which will be part of the costume for our upcoming
school musical. The cost of the shirt is $5 and all students will require one as part of their costume. Money can be
paid at the front office or sent in an envelope to the class teacher.
Rehearsals for the performance have continued to improve and it is shaping up to be quite a show. We look forward
to staging it at the Roxy and hope to see you there for one of the performances.
Reminder
As the weather begins to get cooler, please label all clothing that you think that your child might take off
during the day e.g. hat, jumper and track pants.

PSSA Netball
On Tuesday, 10 girls from Years 5 & 6 travelled to Warialda to play in the first
round of the PSSA Netball competition.
The girls played with great
determination and
proved to be fierce
competition for the
Warialda team! All girls
played hard right to the
end!
The result was very close
with Warialda coming out
winners 13—10.
All girls displayed
outstanding
sportsmanship and should
be pleased with their efforts. As a school, we are certainly proud of their
commitment and effort!!
Well done girls!

FROM THE DEPUTY
HALF YEARLY EXAMS
These commence for all students in Years 7 to 11 on Monday 2nd June. Students would be well advised to ensure that
they are well prepared for these exams. If students tell you they have no homework remind them that next week is
exam week so they have plenty to do, and should be preparing.
MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLBEING OF YOUNG PEOPLE
On Friday 30th May Mr Hansen, Mrs Gasson and myself will be going to Sydney for this all day seminar.
Some of the topics include ‘Helping Kids through the Middle Years’, ‘Internet Addiction - is it real?’, ‘Anxiety in
Young People’, ‘Bullying ……;. It should be a really fruitful seminar covering a wide range of very relevant topics.
ICAS
These competitions continue next week with the Science competition taking place on Tuesday 4th June.
Until next time …….
