Chairman’s Chat
Welcome to our Newsletter. I hope this month finds you all well.
The clocks have leapt forward and I for one am looking forward to the lighter
nights. Hopefully the grass will start to grow and we can cut down on the
hay.
We had a good day at Area Dressage at Keysoe with a few good results.
Our intermediate team came 2nd . If there had been one more team they
would have qualified . There needed to be 21 teams to send 1st and 2nd
place but unfortunately there was only 20 . Well done to all those who took
part.
This is the month of our first Hunter Trial this year and we really need your
help. If you can spare the day and feel you could jump judge for us then
please let us know. You will be fed and watered and it will go down as your
riding club help, as in the conditions of joining.
On the 6th April we have members doing the Intermediate Show Jump
Qualifier and on the 19th we have the Combined Training Qualifier so good
luck to all those competing.
If you would like to give any Qualifiers a go then please speak to Sophie for
seniors and Antonia for juniors.
Hazel is working hard to organize all different types of training so take
advantage and check out the dates.
Finally our entry to Blenheim International Horse Trials in September has
been accepted. Please note that this year we will be watching who helps,
competes and trains with the club. If you do none of these then please do
expect to be selected. You must be capable of jumping 1m5’. Further
information will be posted nearer the time.
We look forward to seeing you at our Hunter Trial.
Best wishes
Becky (RFRC Chair)
News from the Editor
Dear Members,
It is with some sadness that Vicky Ulliot-Rose has decided to give up being Editor of our Newsletter. As her
replacement I just want to say a big Thank You Vicky for all your much appreciated hard work.
I have taken over the editorship of the Newsletter as of this edition. I do hope I will be worthy of the job. We will try
to give you plenty of content to read and find out what is going on within Rockingham Forest Riding Club.
The various committee members have added their reports for the last month and you can see what’s on so far in the
coming months.
Summer is not far away and we kick off the season with our Spring Hunter Trial on 26th April at Boughton Park. Look
forward to seeing you all there whether competing or just coming along and cheering on friends and family.
As you may know, I have been encouraging you all to take part in the ‘Style’ element of the Winter Dressage series
and I am pleased to say the interest has been good. Now, with Summer Area qualifiers in mind, there will be both
‘Style’ Riding and ‘Style’ Jumping to compete in for the National Championships. So do have a go. I am on hand if
you have any questions as I have been honing my judging skills which will help!
One idea I would like to start in these pages is ‘Book Corner’ where a member has a favourite book about horses –
and it can be either fact or fiction – and they would like to share the details with us so that we may buy or borrow a
copy if we wish. Below I am starting it off with my suggestion of the month.
If you wish to submit anything for the Newsletter whether an article, question or advertisement, then please feel
free to contribute. All suggestions are welcome.
Happy riding to you all and may you and your horses be safe.
Jenny Innes

Club Social Events
Social & training
This month see’s the start of our training for this year. I think that most of us will have our horses
up and going after the winter break, so now is the time to get booked in for which ever discipline
you plan to enter in the coming months.
Last month saw our final winter dressage competition, with quite a healthy turnout. I only wish the
same could have been said for helpers on the day. On saying that, a big thank you to those who
did help in between competing and judging etc. Ladies, you know who you were, thank you
again.
Saturday 7th March. The tack sale was abysmal, even the people who requested it, didn't turn up. I
will say no more. We put £11 into the clubs funds.
Saturday 4th April see’s the start of this month’s training with flatwork / dressage. 2pm start at
Alley farm, Lowick, by kind permission of Pam and Kerry. Tony Neal is our instructor on the day,
dressage being one of his many talents, and good at it he is too according to the results in the
horse and hound. These sessions are on a surface and there is plenty of hard standing for all
transport. At this moment there are a couple of places left. £20 for members and £23 for non
members, who of course are very welcome. For those who don't know where it is, it will be sign
posted in the village. These sessions are not for all pure dressage enthusiasts, they are designed to
help get the best out of your movements in a test and the best out of you and your horse at
whatever stage you are at. Please ring me to book your slot. 01832-733242.
Saturday 18th April. Cross country seems to be every ones favourite. 2pm at Boughton Park,
Weekly. Another of Tony’s talents on this day, as he will be our instructor. As I write this there are
only 2 places left. We are so lucky to be able to use this venue, both for training and our events,
especially this year as we are being allowed to update our course as the weather improves. Again
please ring me for a time/slot, price as usual £20 for members, and £23 for non members. 01832733242.
Saturday, 25th April, the first of our show jump training sessions. These will be held from 2pm at
Deer Park, Stoke Albany, by kind permission of Miss Helen Tomlin. Again, will be sign posted. Tom
Fray will be our instructor; many of you will remember him from last year when he helped with all
three disciplines throughout. These sessions are on grass, so be aware that you may need studs.
There is plenty of parking space. Again please ring me to book in, price as before; £20 for
members, and £23 for non members. 01832-733242.
In the future months
Saturday 2nd May - Cross country training Boughton Park, Weekly.
Saturday 30th May - Show jump training, Deer Park, Stoke Albany.
Saturday 9th May. Visit to the Animal Health Centre, Newmarket. This takes place on There are
still places available at approximately £30. I expect to have lunch menus very soon when I will be
able to give a definite price. This visit includes; bus, tour, talk and lunch. We will be going
predominantly for the equine side, but as the majority of us have cats, dogs, birds, reptiles etc I am
sure we will be just as interested in their care and welfare. The research here is second to none in
their new equine treatment centre. I now need deposits from those of you who have already
booked. If anyone else is interested, please contact me ASAP as I need to fill the bus and order
lunches. Bus leaves Burton Latimer car park at 10am on this day and we will definitely be home by
5pm at the latest. 01832-733242.

Book Corner
Out there is a world of literature based around the Horse. I thought it would be nice to find out what and
where it all is.
To start this item off I am suggesting a lovely little book 0f short stories my daughter gave me for
Christmas. I keep it by my bed so I can dip into it on a fairly regular basis. It is called Horse
Stories, edited by Diana Secker Tesdell and published in 2012 by Everyman’s Pocket Classics.
Authors include Beryl Markham, Rudyard Kipling, Saki, Mark Twain and others, all well known. I
thoroughly recommend it. Of course, short stories are lovely when we are busy. It usually means
we can finish it!
