Taking Out the Trash!
Today is garbage pickup at our house. Since the garbage trucks come around early, we try to take the
trash and recycle containers to the curb the night before. If we forget, Joe usually makes a run to the
Dump. Otherwise, the garbage piles up and becomes a problem. It’s cumbersome and unsightly. Stuff
begins to rot and stink, which then attracts flies. Ants appear out of thin air.
So it is with our lives. There is a lot of garbage that accumulates in our day-to-day living. If we don’t
regularly “take it out,” it can pile up, becoming cumbersome and unsightly. It can fester and rot and . . .
well, you get the idea.
The garbage of life can take on a variety of forms.
At times it’s anxiety. We worry about our children, our finances, our weight, our marriage, our work, our health, our parent’s
health, our children’s education, our church, our government, our society, our world.
Or maybe anger. We’re angry at the car that stopped too abruptly in front of us, the woman talking on her phone in the line
ahead of us, the cashier being “too chatty” while checking us out, our spouse for not listening, our boss for too many demands,
our children for being children, our parents’ for being parents, our church for being church.
Perhaps it’s resentment. We resent not being chosen, not getting our preferred way, being told what to do, not being consulted,
not having our “say.”
Sometimes it’s guilt. We regret the phone call never made, the letter not written, decisions made while young, the harsh word
spoken in haste, the critical spirit that looks for fault, the accusation that was hasty, the joke offered at the expense of another.
Often it’s fear. We are afraid of settling for less, losing our job, the worsening economy, the future of our children, our
declining health, learning something new, being forgotten or left behind.
ANXIETY. ANGER. RESENTMENT. GUILT. FEAR. Just some of the trash we accumulate each day. The garbage can pile up and
weigh us down, cluttering our minds, polluting our hearts, creating attitudes that can emit some rather noxious fumes.
GOOD NEWS! We have a Savior—and one of His specialties is picking up the trash! Psalm 51:10-11 says, “Create in me a clean
heart, O God; renew a right spirit within me! Do not banish me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.” And I love
the way Eugene Peterson interprets the Psalmist in verse 11: “Don’t throw me out with the trash, or fail to breathe holiness in
me.”
No matter how stinky we may be, Jesus doesn’t throw us out with the trash! Instead, Jesus wants to take the trash out of our
lives—daily. So here’s the deal: I have to make the effort to take it to the curb. But, thankfully, I don’t have to wait till “Garbage
Day.” Jesus is always ready and willing to pick-up the trash.
I think I’ll carry some out right now. I bet my family and friends will be happy about that. And, truthfully, so will I. And best of all,
since He lives with me, my Father should feel a lot more at home in a clean house ;-)
Joyfully His and Yours,
Pastor Gayle
RHCC VISION
WOMEN OF THE CHURCH
These are exciting times. God continues to do amazing things in
and through RHCC. In March, at the congregational gathering,
we had the opportunity to share what our vision statement and
core values mean to us. This month, and in the months to
come, we will be sharing the comments that we received.
Women of the Church will meet on Tuesday, May 5, for
our annual salad luncheon at 10:30 a.m. (note the time)
in the greeting area. Our lesson is "Balancing Needs and
Wants". How well do you like to shop? Lunch will
follow. Please bring a salad to share. For any questions,
call Chris at 1-704-516-3507 or Anne at 893-831-1086.

Love and Prayers, Katherine Hinson, Director
Have you recently lost a loved one? Are you still acutely
mourning the passing of a spouse, a parent, a friend or a
child even though it’s been years since it happened? At
some point in our lives, we all have to face the sadness
that comes after the death of a loved one. This group is
designed to provide practical and spiritual means by
which grief can be managed, shared and even transformed into a stronger hope in Christ’s resurrection. If
you or anyone you know is suffering with grief following
the passing of a loved one, please feel free to join us in
Room 116 on Sundays from 3-5:00 p.m. Each session is
designed so that you can join at any time. Please contact
Pastor Jason or Nancy Palmer for more information on
this new program at our church.
WELCOME !
We are so happy to welcome to our RHCC church family
John Leon Lewis as our new Minister of Worship and Arts
and Bobby Little as our Associate Minister of Worship and
Arts.
John is a passionate worship leader, a powerful conductor
of choirs and orchestras, a skilled vocalist and recording
artist, an accomplished pianist and a highly sought after
Christian entertainer. He studied voice and piano at the
Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, Maryland and
received a Music degree from Towson State University in
Towson, Maryland. Although John’s list of accomplishments is quite impressive, the PSRC was most captivated by
his deep reverence and love for Jesus Christ. We are
extremely excited about not only the beautiful music, but
also the energy and enthusiasm John has already brought
to our Worship and Arts ministry since he joined us
officially on April 12th, and we eagerly look forward to what
is yet to come!
Bobby has had a passion for music since the sixth grade at
Wake Christian Academy where he played the saxophone
and later the bass clarinet. After graduating high school
and moving to Charlotte, NC, his passion became a career
as he became the bass player for a local band. Feeling a tug
from God on both his heart and his life drew Bobby into
focusing his talents on leading worship in numerous
capacities. He participated on the worship team leading
30,000 students in worship in St. Louis, has toured with
worship leader Ryan Internicola, has led numerous worship
services around the greater Charlotte area and has
recorded with Danen Kane, a nationally renowned
Christian recording artist. He is humble, with a heart only
to serve the Lord and serve the people of his church. Bobby
is already a familiar face around RHCC, but we look forward
to him officially joining our staff on May 10th.
No doubt RHCC will be deeply blessed not only by their
extraordinary contributions to our music ministry, but also
by the hearts of these two fine men.

DO YOU KNOW …
What is a Missions Committee?
The Missions Committee is a group of persons, each with unique gifts, united in the desire and determination to
help people in need, while reaching out to bring people to God.
What does the Missions Committee do?
The Missions Committee leads all of us out through the church doors into our community and the greater world.
While lending support with heart, hands and money, one compelling goal is to find and serve the needy, sharing
the love of God with them.
Each year, a number of mission projects are selected and funded by the Missions Budget.
Every month, 10% of the pledge and plate offering is transferred into the Missions Budget.
Additionally, church members volunteer to serve as liaisons between the organizations and the congregation.
Who is presently serving?
The Missions Committee consists of 9 members, confirmed by the congregation, who agree to serve for a three year term. Every year, three of them rotate out.

CONGREGATIONAL QUESTIONNARE - You should have received in your mail a congregational
questionnaire inviting your participation in the capital feasibility study we're conducting this
spring. We ask that you take a few moments to read the Vision Statement about the proposed
projects and then complete the questionnaire and return it directly to our consultant's office in
Charlotte. You also have the option of completing the questionnaire online at the link http://
www.surveymonkey.com/s/riverhills2015. If you did not receive a questionnaire and would
like a hard copy, please contact the church office. The deadline to complete online and post
mark hard copies is May 8, 2015
