Course Description:
Provide an integrated approach to reading and writing using thematic units,
student’s interests, academic skills and abilities. Students will participate in small guided reading
groups, writing projects – using the writing process and a variety of genres, journal writing, and
literacy activities such as games, puzzles, and literacy folders. Students will explore and expand their
knowledge in the content areas of math: algebraic thinking, place value, measurement, probability,
problem solving and geometry throughout the course of the year. Students will further develop
number sense in all of these areas through hands-on activities, games, online learning and real world
applications. Most importantly, students will learn that math can be a blast!

build knowledge and know-how. Become young geologists delving into rocks, minerals, and magnets.
Later, we will investigate weather, becoming expert meteorologists! Finally, we will learn about the
many different soils in Washington State that help and grow our communities. We will grow our own
garden, and learn about how to keep our earth healthy and clean. Support and encouragement will
also be provided for students to engage in at-home science projects to share and showcase at
PARADE!

Readers Theater, Puppetry, Photo Story, and other artistic mediums that will incorporate literacy skills

Course Description:
The purpose of this class is to learn music through five concept areas: Rhythm,
Melody, Harmony, Form, and Timbre, and to have some beginning learning experiences with musical
instruments that foster an interest in life long musical learning. We will approach learning music
through movement, speaking, singing, listening, and playing. This process will include imitation,
exploration, improvisation, and practice. Students will experience a variety of instruments, including
beginning exposure to the recorder. Students will have more success and fun in the class if they
practice at home during the Recorder Karate portion of our class. Students can purchase a recorder on
their own, or use one from PARADE for the course of the class. Note: Students are welcome to take
this class more than once. It changes every year based on who the students are, what knowledge they
bring into the class, and preferences of the students. A higher level of challenge is available for those
students who have taken the recorder portion before.

and characters, then build context through activities that require decision-making, writing, and verbal

Course Description:
Share the adventures of reading and writing through the worlds of fiction and
non-fiction genres. This course will offer and integrated approach to learning based on the students’
interests, academic skills and abilities. Students will learn about the structure of fiction and nonfiction text through reading strategies to build critical thinking around text. They will also use that
structure to develop their own writing skills while working through the writing process. Learning will
take place as a whole class, in small group instruction and through various literacy activities that
develop lifelong readers and writers. This class will engage students in learning about the concepts of
math operations and principles using hands-on concept development and skill practice. Students will
participate in a variety of math investigations to help them develop basic math understanding using
mathematical tools, manipulatives, math games, and peer collaboration. Students will be able to
express their mathematical understanding both in oral and written form. Parents should be using a
published math curriculum with students on a daily basis at home. Homework will be in the form of
math fact practice and development.

This course is designed to approach math from an investigative, problem
solving point of view. Students will conduct investigations of mathematical concepts using
mathematical tools, manipulatives, and experimentation in collaboration with their peers. Students
will be able to express their understanding of mathematical concepts and principles both orally and in
writing. Topics covered could include numerical sense, money, decimals and fractions, probability and
statistics, introductory algebra, and geometry concepts. Math topics will often coordinate with the
Science class being taught during 1st block.
All students should be using a published math curriculum at home for their main math instruction, as
this is a supplementary class. This course is intended to supplement the math curriculum that students
are engaging in at home.

research of topics, presentations to our class, and dramas. Students will be given short weekly

Students will delve into the growing world of technology in order to become

again and again. Special projects will involve learning about various cloud based tools, along with

Course Description:
Explore the power and creativity of words as you write your own adventure
story. This class will encourage and excite the creative writer as we explore the world of heroes and
heroines. Students will develop their oral, written, and listening skills as they create their own hero,
heroine, villain, and the plot that weaves them all together. By the end of the semester, students will
publish their adventure story in digital and/or print format. There’s no right or wrong way to write
creatively. The only thing this class requires is your imagination to write what you and no one else in
the world can. Students will be asked to spend time each week writing outside of class, so please
allow one hour per week for writing time.

Students in this class will explore a variety of techniques for using
photography as a way to express themselves. Students will gain experience in the elements of
photography as well as the modes of the camera. They will also have an opportunity to work with
photo editing software, and learn about organization of photos, printing, and posting their work on
the web. Most project work is done in class, however, students are encouraged to practice their new
skills at home. Students are welcome to use their own family camera; class cameras will be provided,
but many students gain more time on task if they bring their own camera to use. SD cards are

In Micro Worlds, students explore magnifiers, learning that tools like lenses
and microscopes can be used to extend the sense of sight to view objects in greater detail. By
observing everyday objects with a variety of lenses, students will learn to use a microscope, learn the
functions of all its parts, and practice proper lighting and focusing techniques. Students will prepare
their own slides, view live specimens, and watch how they feed, grow, and multiply, developing a
sense of microbial life and interactions among living things and between living things and their
environment.

Do you ever wish you had a group to play an outdoor game but can’t round up
enough people? If so, this course is for you. Over the semester the class will focus on group games
and activities that help students get fit. Students will develop skills and techniques in running,
jumping, throwing, and group decision making through the experience and challenge of cooperative
and competitive games such as Ultimate Frisbee, Capture the Flag, and Slalom Blindfold Challenge.

This hands-on course will immerse you in the exciting and popular world of
robotics. As you build, program, and test a variety of LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT 2 robots, you’ll create
robotic solutions to problems set in real world environments. You’ll explore a variety of different
robots such as; drive designs, walking robots, bumper cars, and robotic animals. This course will
challenge you to think critically and work with others to solve problems. Participants will work
together in design teams to build and program robots which can perform various assigned or chosen
tasks. Whether you’re brand new to programming and robotics or an aspiring engineer, you’ll expand
your knowledge while having an awesome time with classmates who share your interests.

Course Description:
In this course, students will explore the topic of journalism as it relates to
newspaper and the internet, including blogging. The main focus of this class will be the development
of written and oral articles that can be published in our own newspaper, The PARADE Times, which is
published every four weeks, and in our local community papers. Students will take turns in various
newspaper roles throughout the year, and should expect to spend time each week composing and
writing. Individual writing coaching and lessons will occur throughout each class, and students will be
encouraged to learn how to develop ideas and stories of their own interests. Students will be
expected to follow up on writing ideas, research possible topics, and spend time writing at home in
supplement to the time spent in class, with an average time at home being thirty minutes a
week. Access to a computer and Microsoft Word outside of class will be helpful. Examples of The

Students will gain exposure to Pacific Rim countries with the purpose of
becoming more aware citizens in our culturally diverse world. Learning activities will be hands on as
teams of students work together to research, prepare fact sheets, draw timelines, write short reports,
and present information about 16 western Pacific Rim countries as they simulate a "race" from Japan
to New Zealand. Students will be given short weekly assignments, and will create a “game board”
map of the Pacific Rim. Homework will vary but averages about 1/2 hour per week. Homework will
reinforce concepts covered in class. Many materials will be supplied in class. Individual student
projects may use materials found or purchased from home.

again and again. Special projects will involve learning about various cloud based tools, along with
learning how to use these tools to research topics and organize learning for other classes the student
