They are based in Lakewood Township, N.J. They play in the Class A South Atlantic League. Their home field is First Energy Park. The Blue Claws moved to Lakewood from Fayetteville, N.C., where they had been known as the Fayetteville Generals and later as the Cape Fear Crocs. Their first season in Lakewood was 2001. The Phillies’ previous South Atlantic League affiliate was based in Kannapolis, N.C., and known as the Piedmont Boll Weevils from 1995 to 2000 (the team is now known as the Kannapolis Intimidators). Prior to that, the team was based in Spartanburg, S.C. On Sept. 1, 2004, Ryan Howard became the first former Blue Claw to play in the major leagues, playing first base for the Phillies in a 7-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves at Citizens Bank Park. He played for the Blue Claws in the 2002 season. In 2005, he was named the National League Rookie of the Year, and, in 2006, he was named the National League Most Valuable Player. We will be taking a trip to the Blue Claws Stadium on Wednesday, July 22. The bus will leave at 10 a.m. Please sign up at the front desk. Before coming here they resided at Lake Ridge in Toms River. Betty was born at home in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Betty had many jobs throughout her life. For 10 years Betty worked as a teller in a bank. For six years Betty worked at National Starch where she was a secretary to the president of the company. After that, she worked as a secretary at AT&T for seven years. Gene was born in Nanticoke, Pa. (a mining town). Gene attended King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., in 1953. He earned a BA in economics, plus one additional year to pick up educational credits for teaching. From 1953 to 1955, Gene served two years in the U.S. Navy where he was on a destroyer serving as a radar man. In 1959, Gene attended Seton Hall College in South Orange, N.J. He received a master’s in personnel and guidance. Gene worked at New Jersey Schools — Edison High School, Bridgewater, Raritan High School, and Franklin High School. He worked in the schools for 37 years — 34 of those years spent in the Guidance Department. Some of Betty’s hobbies include reading, playing solitaire on her iPad, listening to music, and collecting DVDs. Betty also enjoys the activities we hold in the ILCR at Bella Terra. Betty enjoys meeting and befriending nice people, both residents and the great staff. For 15 years, Gene was a driving instructor. He also coached soccer, softball, bowling and tennis. Travel was always important to Gene and Betty. Two of their daughters served in the Navy Nurse Corps. Their oldest daughter, Betsy, retired 11 years ago as a commander. Their other daughter, Tisha, is still on active duty. She is a captain and has been on duty for 27 years. Tisha is planning on retirement in three years. Betty and Gene visited wherever they were stationed. They took side trips to Thailand and Hong Kong when Betsy was stationed in Oklahoma. When Tisha was stationed in Guam their side trips were to Australia and Tokyo. Betty and Gene have seven children, four girls and three boys. They have 19 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Something most people do not know about Betty is she went to college for seven years at night while working full-time and raising seven children. She earned an associate’s degree. Some advice Betty has to share with the younger generations is to always show respect to other people. Keep in touch with your family and always let them know that you love them. Do not hold grudges! Always be kind. Gene’s advice is to follow your heart! Find a job that you like and you will never work a day in your life. Betty and Gene both served on the IL Association at Bella Terra. Betty and Gene will be married for 61 years in September. Betty says, “Gene was always my best friend, partner and love of my life.” Gene stated, “A marriage made in heaven!” EVENT RECAP MANAGEMENT TEAM Our Trip to Sandy Hook was enjoyed by all.
