What is a Level 3 Good Sports club? The Good Sports organisation works with communities to make sports clubs safe and healthy by providing advice about managing alcohol responsibility and making clubs friendlier. As we are a Level3 Good Sports club we abide by a liquor license, have bar management strategies and a full alcohol management plan in place, and our bar volunteers attend Responsible Serving of Alcohol training. We are not completely reliant on bar sales to function. A much larger percentage of our income comes from, green fees, raffles, functions and special events. We do not sell cigarettes and have a smoke policy in place. We also have in place a transport policy. Advice and assistance from the Good Sports organisation is greatly appreciated This community service is proudly supported by Alan Viner & Shirley Warwick-Day 01, Peter Thurecht 02, Alf Lorraway 03, Errol Gregson 09, Garry Walker 13, Bernard Tregilles 19, John Bain, Sid Hoare & Tom Hoare 20, David Archer 25, Alex MacDonald 26, Hugh Byrd 27 Happy Birthday to all of you from the rest of us at RBC Lady President Merle Moore. Report by Bev Johnston. Rockhampton Bowls Club ladies held a very successful Day for their President, Merle Moore, on 1st. April. Visiting teams from areas west, the coast and Rockhampton were welcomed with a delicious morning tea. Following the meet and greet and sharing of tea and coffee and temping scones, players gathered on the green to a formal welcome and allocating of teams for social play. Laughter and good fellowship was the order of the day. Ladies were impressed by the beautifully decorated dining area with a rose theme and enjoyed drinks and a taste tempting luncheon prepared by our ladies with help from member, Kev Weaver who has not lost his ham carving ability. Table service and kitchen clean up along with bar service was provided ably by several of our male bowlers. Presentations were provided to President Merle by both Ladies and Mens sections. Team trophies and donated gifts were distributed. Our Easter raffle which had proved very popular was drawn along with other raffles including the Easter cake, decorated cushion and a hand bag. All of these prizes were donated and or made by our ladies. Merle`s day was enjoyed by all those present and this made all the preparation work worthwhile. Bowls Queensland have changed the Come & Try Day to what days may suit the various clubs best. We all know that nearly all clubs need to increase members including ours. I have applied for all the flyers and posters needed for a Come & Try day. We hope to organize a day in June and again in September. We are considering sending out invitations to individuals and groups. We need all members to help. If you know someone that may be interested in bowling or someone that is looking to get involved in something, please let your Secretary know. 36 Players contested the Neil Barry Shield recently. Teams were table selected and all had a great afternoon A few years ago, Peter Lawton came to a meeting and said that shields played in the past that still have room for more winners should be still played for. Neil Barry was a very prominent member of RBC and playing for his shield stopped when family support wained. It was pleasing to see Peter winning on the day with Beverley Johnston and Carol Wellings after the efforts Peter put in to get this game going again. Mens Competition Results. Main aim of the discussion is to ascertain what procedures are required in the planning stages of such a project. In relation to this project we have requested a meeting with the Iwasaki Foundation to discuss and receive advice how we should apply for a grant for this project. Unfortunately we were not eligible to apply for a grant at this time. Your Secretary, Bernie Gottke contacted Fred Dickman of Aus Solar Power to discuss the viability of upgrading our solar cells to the 10kKWs system we had originally planned to do. Having the 6 kW of solar cells has saved our club around $6,000.00 to date. Electricity costs for the same period have been around $24,000.00. Fred Dickman has negotiated a deal with Bowls Queensland to install solar cells for Bowling Clubs and pay off the costs of the solar cells with the savings of electricity over 4 years. We are in a position whereas we could pay a substantial deposit and pay off the remainder in 3 years. Increasing from our present 6 kW of solar cells to 10 or13kWs of solar cells would be a huge saving. Upgrading of our 190 watt cells to 305 watt cells would attract a rebate from the Government. Your committee will look into this. In the January and February Newsletters I had an article about how to recognise strokes. When we are faced with a medical problem that anyone of us might face, the rest of us are left to “What to do” We now have a folder in a container just under the downstairs wall phone marked First Aid Rockhampton Bowls Club. In this folder is a brief instruction on what to do with, a heart attack, a stroke, an asthma attack, a nose bleed and all the other things that may happen to someone. Each item describes the very basic step to take while the ambulance is on the way. Make sure you have a look at it and tell others it is there if needed. Please do not take it home to read. Cover of the folder Inside the folder are all the basic guides of what is the first thing to do when someone has for example, Chest Pains, a Nose Bleed, an Asthma Attack, a Stroke, a Heart Attack and all the other various problems anyone of us may have at any time. Being aware of these guidelines it may save someone`s life. The recently appointed CEO of Bowls Queensland has resigned. Doug has been given the opportunity to advance to a better job. We wish him well in his new job. Your Secretary, Bernie Gottke and Deputy Chairperson had a meeting with Melissa Findlay from the Queensland Sport and Recreation Department to finalise the replacement of the sails between the clubhouse and the roof over the green. It was discussed that replacing the sails with new sails would most likely have a same result with another cyclone or severe storm. We have now applied for a grant from the disaster fund to replace the sails with a solid roof. Your Secretary, Bernie Gottke had a meeting with Brian Coe from the QRAA to discuss and apply for a grant from the disaster fund to cover the cost of the broken window, the torn northern shade cloth and the subsequent flooding of the lounge and dining area as a result of the cyclone Marcia filling our gutters with insulation wool. Application for money to cover the cost incurred by the cyclone has been completed. Broadband for Seniors Our main Tutor, John Eurell has moved on to live in the Maleny area. Our kiosk has access to a wealth of information. The computers are ideal for seniors to learn how to use computers. They are very easy to learn how to type letters, make cards and etc. How to send emails or surf the Web. Some of our members that said they could never be able to use a computer are now doing so. Many of our present members have computers and use the web. What I am asking is for some of these members to become an official Broadband for Seniors Tutor You will be surprised the information you will have access to. It is very rewarding that a few hours of your time each week can help someone to operate a computer and to connect them to their grand children. I also appeal to any person in our community that would like to become a Tutor, please contact Bernie Gottke at [email protected] You will be most welcome. On many occasions over the years, we have requested those that choose to play competitions to place their name in the absentee book if they are going away or too ill to play bowls. However we do stress that you cannot continue to be absent on an ongoing basis. It is not good enough to just send an email or leave a phone message at the last minute to say you are not available. Recently there has been a message sent to the competition director who was on holidays. A lot of time is spent by the competition committee and they would be in the right if your name is not in the absentee book or not notified of unavailability, you could face a forfeit. 21% of our income comes from our bar operation. In recent times it has been getting harder and harder to get volunteers to work behind the bar. Your committee has arranged for volunteers to do the Responsible Serving of Alcohol course on the club`s computer under the guidance of a Committee Member. Your committee has also bought a till with all sales of drinks programmed. To sell a soft drink, a beer, a mixed drink a juice or nip of spirits all you need to do is press the key marked soft drink, light beer, heavy beer, a mixed drink, juice or nip of spirit and the price will automatically be recorded. More than one drink press the key twice or for the number of drinks sold. For a variety of drinks press the required keys. Full instructions are next to the till. This enables the volunteers to not worry about the price of drinks. We have no beer on tap so again volunteers do not have to pour a beer. I ask our members to think about volunteering and contact Noel Roberts to discuss the matter. Coming events are. May 09 Emu Park BC President`s Day May 16 Bates Goddard at NRBC May 17 Victoria Park BC Presidents Day May 24 RBC Noel Roberts President`s Day May 29 Ladies Cards Day. May 30 & 31 Hook Anderson Fours at DMBC BBQ & Bowls May 15 BBQ & Bowls May 16 BBQ & Bowls May 30 War Games Group State Championships May 30 & 31 (Includes Bowls & BBQ) If you would like to help out with any home event, please see our Chairperson Scott Howell. Our Website WWW.rockhamptonbowls.com.au has now been updated and includes all information about our great club. The photo gallery has now been replaced with all new photos. Check it out. The main water pipe to the club house that was above ground has now been replaced with underground poly pipe. Other work to be scheduled is to replace the green`s roof gutter and or down pipes adjacent to the club house with a larger gutter and down pipes. Especially if we receive a grant to replace the sails with a solid roof. We have received advice from our Regional Council that there has been an increase in cases of food borne illnesses in Queensland recently, many of which related to outbreaks of Salmonella. Salmonella infection is a type of gastroenteritis caused by Salmonella bacteria. The top four issues observed during recent food borne illness outbreaks are Egg wash that is topped up, used multiple times &kept at room temperature over long periods Raw egg products such as mayonnaise & hollandaise, mousse &tiramisu prepared to far in advance & not refrigerated Inadequate cleaning & sanitation throughout food businesses Cross contamination of bacteria using tea towels & other equipment
