He brings to the club a generous sponsorship from the manager of the Avondale Heights TAB, and a strong passion for the continuing success of our club. This is his profile. Bob was born on the 5th April 1944 and is 71 years of age. He grew up in Moonee Ponds and was educated at Moonee Valley Central and Essendon Technical School. As a boy he loved sport, kept himself fit and played football and baseball. He excelled at baseball and played for the Essendon Baseball Club in A grade. As a young man he studied for an apprenticeship and completed an engineering technicians course along with tool making and press tool design. Bob worked at the ammunitions factory for 34 years and when the company relocated to Benalla he took a redundancy package. He met Lyn his wife at a social picnic and they have been happily married for 46 years, they have two children Kristian and Alicia. They also have four beautiful grandchildren. Bob speaks glowingly of his wife who has been a tower of strength, throughout periods of illness, currently he is in good health. With an excellent back ground of administration skills from his occupation and as a past President of Avondale Heights Football club for three years he brings to the club a wealth of experience which he hopes to utilise in some capacity. When Bob arrived at Maribyrnong Park he was immediately impressed and as a newcomer to bowls realised he faced an enormous challenge. He has been made to feel most welcome and appreciates the support shown to him. Particularly from the coaches, Brian D’Arcy and Mat Cattivera. He also thanks Wally Herrick, Bob Kelly and Fred Menzies for their encouragement. P.S Bob would also like to thank the manager of the Avondale Heights TAB, Mr Phil Jolley for his generous donation to our club. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Life Members Day On Sunday 12th April a small number of members helped to celebrate our Annual Life Members Day. It is a day when we thank them for the work they did in building this great Club and their continued support. Thanks to the ladies who organised the Life Members lunch and our afternoon tea. Also thanks to the Life Members for supplying the prize money for the winners of the social bowls. Midweek Players Lunch On Thursday 16th April, twenty five of the Midweek players had an end of season lunch at the Pascoe Vale Hotel. Good food and good fellowship had by all. Thanks to Dulcie Heard for organising the outing. Health and Fitness As we grow older Doctors recommend small amounts of exercises. This includes strength, aerobic, and flexibility. Four days a week for 30 minutes. Some readers might find “A Work Out” of some help. Work Out A work out is 25% preparation, 75% determination. Stated another way its one part physical exertion and three parts self discipline. Doing it is easy once you get started. A work out makes you better today than you were yesterday. It strengthens the body, relaxes the mind and toughens the spirit. When you work out regularly your problems diminish and your confidence grows. A work out is a personal triumph over laziness and procrastination. It is a badge of a winner, the mark of an organised goal oriented person, who has taken charge of his or her destiny. A work out is a wise use of time and an investment in excellence. It is a way of preparing for life’s challenges and proving to yourself, that you have what it takes to do what is necessary. A work out is the key that unlocks the door to opportunity and success. Hidden within each one of us is an extra ordinary force. Physical and mental fitness are triggers that can release it. A work out is a form of rebirth, when you finish a work out, you don’t simply feel better, you feel better about yourself. Health Check ( the Clubs, not Yours) Back in May 2013, twenty members attended and contributed to the discussions at the forum conducted by Paul Holtschke, Community Development Officer from Bowls Australia. The Forum was arranged with Paul because your Board had done a “health check” on the condition of your Club. The result showing we are around 68 per cent, about average, but it pointed out various areas we needed to address to enable us to become an above average club. From these discussions we made the final list of “What will make us Great”. Neil Gladstone formed a “Working Group” to plan our “Strategic Plan” to “Make us Great”. Over the past two years we have tried to implement your suggestion and I am pleased to report that our latest “health check” shows we are at 80 percent. Well done to all members who have contributed to the Club over this period. But we still have room for improvement. The report shows we a behind in the areas of Membership services, Members and manpower. Let’s see how we can improve in these areas over the next two years. Graeme Tabley, Chairman.
