President’s Report
A delightful day was had at the Scenic Rim Dairy and a run to Kooralbyn to the Valley Kitchen.
We had a turnout of 48 people attend the lunch and a similar number had an informative talk and tour
of the robotic dairy. It was lovely to dine and view our cars in the park opposite the restaurant.
Our next outing is the Golden Oldies run on Sunday the 19th of April to Sketches Restaurant
Ravensbourne. It will be great to see the old cars and modern ones as well.
I am currently preparing to go to the 57th Annual Federal RROC Rally in Fremantle after which Susie and
I will be continuing onto Europe for a 6 week holiday. We intend to visit Villa D’Esta and Villa Erba to see
the Concorsa at Lake Como on the weekend of May 23rd and 24th. Whilst I am looking at all those
magnificent cars Susie is hoping to see many gorgeous well dressed Italian men!!
We are also intending to go over the Alps following Route Napoleon and visit the French National Motor
Museum, ie the Schlumpf collection in Mulhouse.
Frank Carroll will be taking on the role of President while I am away.
Look out for our May 17th event to Queens Park at Ipswich which coincides with the National Motoring
Heritage Day. It should be an enjoyable day seeing other clubs attending as well.
Brett Roberts our events coordinator is organising the Annual Navigation Run for the 28th of June.
See you in June.
Happy Motoring

Vale Ian Haynes
Ian James Haynes joined the Club in
October 1988. He resigned due to ill
health and inability to attend club
functions in 2012. He was a financial
member for 24 years.
During his membership he owned a 1925
New Phantom, Chassis No. 21RC –
Coachbuilders Windovers. This car was
originally ordered by Lord Maidstone. Lord
Maidstone did not keep the car and it was
sold to a Mr A B Nagle of Cunnamulla
arriving in Sydney in 1926. Ian purchased this vehicle in the 1960’s when it was rundown and in need
of a lot of TLC. He proceeded to restore the car. He had the body rebuilt and made the car driveable. It is
Page 3 of 16
The Northern Spirit

good news that the vehicle was purchased by a fellow club member in 2012 from Ian and is currently
under restoration.
Ian was a chemist and had a chemist shop in Nambour for many years. He was a member of several
other car clubs including the Horseless Carriage Vintage Car Club now located in Maleny.
He built and operated what is now the Bli-Bli Castle located on the hill overlooking Bli-Bli shopping
centre and the Paynter River for many years.
He and his wife Marcia hosted a Queensland Branch club event at their home at Eudlo inland from the
coast.
Ian was a very supportive and happy person who hated wearing ties. He and Marcia were involved with
the Scouts in Nambour over the years and Ian was highly thought of for the support he gave the
Scouting group.
By request Ian wanted those attending his funeral to wear colourful clothes and no ties, obviously, a
reflection of his happy, casual nature
He is survived by his wife Marcia, two children and four grand-children.

Vale Peter Barrow
Peter was held in the highest regard by all who knew him well. Born in
Melbourne in 1948, the second of four children, Peter was five years old when
his family moved to Innisfail where his father George conducted medical
research. Growing up close to the North Johnston River, cane fields and rain
forest, Peter developed a wiry strength and endurance, self-reliance and an
intuitive sense for the bush that he said stood him in good stead when driving
on intelligence seeking missions during the Vietnam war. He learnt to drive in
his mother’s Mini on narrow dirt roads and his passion for motor cars, and
driving at speed, never left him. Interested only in the very best, his search led
him to the technical excellence of Rolls-Royce and the philosophy of Henry
Royce which resonated with Peter and influenced his future endeavours. The 1962 edition of RollsRoyce, The Living Legend arrived from Melbourne on 12-11-1964, the first and most loved book of an
extensive library on Rolls-Royce.
Peter boarded at St Augustine’s Marist College in Cairns until junior level (Year 10 today). He was a
champion swimmer, Army Cadet Medic, member of school band and musical productions. He joined the
Army in 1966 where he undertook adult training to be a motor mechanic. He was posted to 1st Field
Regiment Aid Detachment, Wacol, Queensland in 1967, the same year he purchased his beloved 1951
Bentley Mk.6, Chassis B162MD. To say this car was pampered would be an understatement. It was
Peter’s pride and joy and the vehicle was meticulously maintained during the course of his ownership.
The Bentley was well travelled with Peter driving over 90,000 miles in the early years of his ownership.
Due to ill health Peter sold the Bentley to a family member in Melbourne to keep it in the family. The
Bentley resided in Melbourne until it was recently sold to a private person residing in South Australia.

Peter’s career in the Army spanned 26 years. He did a tour of duty in Vietnam in 1969 with 1st Field
Regiment which included driving for Phoenix operations. This period of his life was to affect Peter’s
health in ensuing years but his pursuit of knowledge continued. Peter received a Chief of General Staff
Commendation for his innovations in logistics. While at Logistic Command in Melbourne, Peter gained
a Bachelor of Business at RMIT, a Post Graduate Diploma in Organisation Change and Development and
a Masters of Business from RMIT. He retired as a Major from the Army in 1992.
Peter was brought on board by the Queensland Police Service after the Fitzgerald Report to design and
run educational programs in Management and Leadership as Principal Staff Development Officer. A
senior member of the Police Service, Emmanuel Anthony said the Peter was an educator as well as
lecturer; having the innate ability to enthuse, to support and to encourage all those with whom he came
into contact. Peter had the ability to lift people’s spirits, to overcome adversity and coupled with this an
infectious enthusiasm for life. I believe all of us who knew him would see that as his lasting legacy.
Retired Deputy Commissioner, Dick Conder wrote to Peter, “You can take pride in your efforts that
certainly brought forward a much wiser, flexible and knowledgeable Senior Executive Leader. Thank you
for your commitment to us.” Peter was awarded the Police Service Medal with clasp.
In 2013 Peter and his wife Monica purchased a 1985 Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit, Chassis No ASF13178.
Again, this car was subject to Peter’s fastidious care. Minor repairs and adjustments were made with a
list of future projects for the car, even down to the right and wrong way to clean the vehicle, within
months of it arriving in Peter’s garage. With his passion uplifted for the marque by the purchase of the
Silver Spirit, Peter was determined to attend the Federal Rally in 2014 in his new car. Defying advice,
both medical and personal, Peter’s determination to not give in, saw him and Monica join in with fellow
club members on the journey and participation, to and at, the 2014 Federal Rally in the Hunter Valley of
New South Wales. He became ill in Inverell but rested and resumed the journey; such was Peter’s strong
will. He was not going to be beaten by ill-health. He enjoyed the rally immensely. He spoke of it many
times with fond memories of the events and renewing friendships with interstate members. Peter’s
resolve and faith, love of his family and friends, of music, cars and planes, and his mates, sustained him
and gave him strength to live each day of his life. He lived and died as a good soldier.
Peter was a Foundation Member of the Queensland Branch and a full financial member, of which he
was very proud, until his passing. Although a man with a seemingly quiet nature Peter was the champion
of the underdog – always there with good council and support for anyone in need. He was a fighter; for
his fellow human beings, his country, his family and friends, sometimes to his own detriment, till the
end. Peter is survived by his wife Monica and their much loved daughter Michelle. Peter was described
by a fellow club member as the the epitome of the term “An Officer and Gentleman”. Peter was all of
that and more. Rest in Peace Peter. We will miss you. Monica, and your friends Barry & Ann Sparks.

Thank You
We would like to thank all club members who attended Peter’s Funeral Service and honoured him in escorting
him to his final resting place. Peter would have been ecstatic to see so many Rolls-Royce and Bentleys grouped
together, particularly in his honour. Thank you.
Monica and Michelle.

Scenic Rim Dairy and Valley Kitchen Outing March 2015
Words by Sue Maitland, photos by Brian & Liam Carson
What a great day we had visiting the Scenic Rim Dairy and the Valley Kitchen at Kooralbyn.
After much stormy weather we had beautiful weather for our drive in the countryside to Scenic Rim
Dairy. Glorious green countryside everywhere.
Experiencing a robotic operated dairy was a fascinating experience. On arrival some of us were a little
concerned about the “skinny cows” but Dennis assured us later that they were very healthy and were
producing lots of milk which is totally different to fattening beef cattle for meat.
Amazingly the computer system directs the cows at the milking shed to where the cows need to go,
either into the milking shed or out. This is via the computer chips in their ears as to whether they are to
be milked or not according to whether they have calves or not. However, the cows all wander over to the
milking shed 2 or 3 times a day to be milked and they wait patiently in line to step onto the automatic
milking machine.
Dennis gave us a very informative talk about his dairy farming life and the challenges they have
experienced due to government regulations and the buying powers of the 2 big supermarket chains.
While Dennis would love to see the consumer have the choice to buy fresh raw milk ie unpasteurised
and unhomogenised, he has at least achieved being able to sell unhomogenised milk ie. the cream sits
on top of the bottle as it did when we were kids! For those who are senior enough to remember!
The milk is delicious so if you haven’t tried it, Google Scenic Rim Dairy and check out your local supplier.
All in all it was a great experience particularly for those who brought along the younger generation who
even got so see a family of piglets running around the paddock!
We continued onto Kooralbyn for lunch at the valley Kitchen where the hospitality was warm and friendly
and the food was like delicious home cooking. Much interesting conversation was to be had with old
and new members alike. It never ceases to amaze me the wealth of life experiences we have amongst
us in our club and I learn something about life at every lunch time conversation. Of course there is often
much humour along with life’s antidotes.
I hope other members enjoyed the day as much as I did and I look forward to seeing you all soon.

Helpful Hint Fitting replacement batteries
Before replacing the battery in your vehicle, there are a few things to keep in mind.
o What polarity is the vehicle. Negative earth or positive earth.
o Which battery terminal is connected to the body or frame.
Fitting a battery incorrectly can be costly to repaired damaged components.
If your vehicle has items which require a battery connection to maintain settings, eg: clock, radio and
seating positions, use a memory device.
Ensure the replacement battery is up to the task. The battery is large enough to cope with the load.
Batteries are rated CCA (cold cranking amps) and RC (reserve current).
Check the battery terminals are tightened and the cables are not fouling on the any metal components.
