Photography Workshop with John Sylvester
Rose Blanche, Newfoundland
Sept 10-14, 2015
John has more than thirty years experience photographing throughout Newfoundland &
Labrador, so he is very pleased to be offering a Newfoundland photography workshop in
2015.
Where: Rose Blanche is a picturesque fishing village located on Newfoundland’s south
west coast, 45 minutes east of Port-aux-Basques, the Newfoundland terminus of the
Marine Atlantic ferry from North Sydney, Nova Scotia.
Our home base will be the charming and comfortable Rose Sea Guest House located in
the heart of the village and overlooking the harbour. http://roseblanche.ca
When: The workshop begins on the evening of Thursday, September 10 and concludes
on the morning of Monday, September 14.
Why: Rose Blanche and surrounding area offers a wealth of photographic opportunities
including: picturesque fishing villages, one of Atlantic Canada’s most beautiful and
historic lighthouses, spectacular coastal scenery and waterfalls.
What: Proposed Schedule Thursday, Sept 10 – Supper and introductions. John will give an evening presentation.
Everyone will get an assignment.
Friday, Sept 11 – We’ll rise early (about 6:30 am) to photograph the historic Rose
Blanche lighthouse. The granite structure – which stands prominently on a rocky
headland with stunning views of the rugged coastline – was built in 1871 and designed
by Robert Louis Stevenson’s family of Edinburgh, Scotland.
After breakfast we’ll visit Barachois Falls, a spectacular waterfalls that spills off the
barrens into a scenic valley just down the road from Rose Blanche.
The balance of the day will be spent exploring the village and surroundings, including
the old road from Rose Blanche to neighbouring Harbour Le Cou to photograph
magnificent views of the coast and fishing village.
Saturday, Sept 12 – We’ll travel by boat to visit the abandoned outport,The Petites,
located along the coast about five kilometers east of Rose Blanche. This fishing
community was re-settled in 2003. Today the houses and buildings stand empty,
exposed to the ravages of weather, including the historic Bethany United Church, built in
1859, one of the oldest wooden churches in Newfoundland.
Sunday, Sept 13 – Morning photography in village. Afternoon, edit images. We’ll discuss
the task of editing and John will give a brief introduction to the editing and processing
software, Adobe Lightroom. Sunday evening: presentation of images and discussion.
Monday, Sept 14 – Breakfast
and goodbyes.
Who: Photographers of all
levels are welcome, from novice
to advanced amateur. The
emphasis of the workshop is on
developing visual awareness
and improving understanding of
the elements that go into making
successful images. However,
you should be familiar with your
camera operation. Read your
