Events Highlights in Brief Picnic For Poki Charity Walk Calendar of Events This day in history Sudoku & Word Search Birthdays Employee of the Month Easter Luau Luncheon Editor: Diane Alba-Means Marketing Director The practice of decorating eggshell is ancient, predating Christian traditions. Ostrich eggs with engraved decoration that are 60,000 years old have been found in Africa. The Christian custom of the Easter egg can be traced as far back as the early Christians of Mesopotamia, who stained eggs red in memory of the blood of Christ, shed at his crucifixion. The Christian Church officially adopted the custom, regarding the eggs as a symbol of the resurrection. I loved dying Easter eggs when I was a kid. My mom didn’t like it much because it would take her months to get the dye stains out of her white porcelain sink. I didn’t care much for the Easter clothes. Just when the weather was getting warm and, I could get rid of my snowsuit, I was forced into clothes that were stiff, painful, and pastel colored. Usually, I would get a new baby blue sport coat, a crisp white shirt with a scratchy collar, and a clip on bow tie. However, the worst part was the shiny, hard Easter shoes. The hard leather soles were effective for breaking the thin ice in the gutter while waiting to go to church, but the slippery bottoms combined with the thin ice meant that I fell down repeatedly. This turned out to be near tragedy when, like a good scout, I escorted my grandmother across the street and brought us both down in the slush! The thrilling part of spring was that when the snow melted in the front yard we would find all the toys and sports equipment that got covered up by the first snowfall last October. It was like getting surprise presents, although they were usually moldy and wet. One year my sisters’ car got covered in a surprise blizzard and it stayed there all winter. I remember one spring we discovered a whole croquet set that had been left in the middle of a game and all winter buried under the snow. I thought it was great that we could just start playing without all the trouble of setting it up. This year I’m going to celebrate Easter by wearing flip flops!
