Father’s Day Luncheon
One of My Father’s Famous Sayings: Our
neighborhood was made of small houses with steep roofs
and small windows. Mrs. Swenson put in the first picture
window in town! It was one big pane of smooth glass and
it didn’t have any dividers. We were amazed. It was a
sign that the future had arrived in our small town.
Mrs. Swenson put her swivel recliner right in front of the window . . . and
promptly fell asleep in it. Her hair in curlers, her feet up and slip showing,
her mouth hung open and she was sawing logs for all to see. All of us kids
thought it hysterical. We didn’t realize that along with seeing her….she
could watch us.
If we were going to the corner store she would see us and ask us to pick up
something for her. If we were shoveling the walk or walking the dog she
would ask for our help to do the same for her. It was irritating, but my
mother said we should always help the old neighbors. So we did, but drug
our feet. Soon she was calling our parents and reporting on our behavior . . .
or lack thereof!
One spring day, I strung a rope across the sidewalk to snag some friends
when they rode their bikes on my part of the sidewalk. Mrs. Swenson called
my parents and reported me. I was punished and mad and said something
(not nice) about Mrs. Swenson and her spying on me all the time.

My Father, in a moment of frustration, said “Well it takes a village to raise
an idiot”. That got my mother and sisters laughing, and me furious.
Whenever I was out of line, which was the cue for them to repeat that mixed
idiom over and over throughout my childhood.
As an adult I think back on Mrs. Swenson and wish we had more nosy
neighbors like her that would help us all watch out for each other.
Along with Honoring our Fathers and nosy neighbors this June remember
June 11-18 is National Nursing Assistants Week. Remember to give a big
mahalo for the wonderful work that’s done by these
extraordinary caregivers that care for our kupuna.
With Aloha,
Steve Hansen, General Manager

Picnic for Poki ~ Kaulike Pescaia
Roselani Place and Ola Na Mele Productions invite you to join our
residents to a Picnic for Poki at 11:00 AM at the Historic Kaahumanu
Church in Wailuku Town, 103 South High Street on Thursday, June
18, 2015. One of our featured guest with live Hawaiian entertainment
will be Kaulike Pescaia. He attends Kamehameha School. His first
contest win was at the age of 8 when he won Maui Shower of Stars
(in the 18 and under group).
Kaulike Pescaia is a dedicated musician and falsetto singer, hearing a song that he likes, will listen to it,
teaching himself the words and chords. He started singing along with the radio at age 2. His dad was
teaching him to play ukulele before age 4 and he got a Mele Ukulele for his 4th birthday and has won
first place (in his age division) at the Hula Grill Ukulele Contest.
Bring your lunch and a friend with you and enjoy coffee and fresh baked cookies from Roselani Place.
Relax under the monkey pod tree for an hour or so at this free event, which is open to the public.
King Kamehmeha I
Kamehameha I (born February 1758, November 1737, or May 1, 1738; died
May 8, 1819), also known as Kamehameha the Great, conquered the Hawaiian
Islands and formally established the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1810. By
developing alliances with the major Pacific colonial powers, Kamehameha
preserved Hawaii’s independence under his rule. Kamehameha is remembered
for the Kanawai Mamalahoe, the "Law of the Splintered Paddle", which
protects human rights of non-combatants in times of battle. Kamehameha's full
Hawaiian name is Kalani Paiea Wohi o Kaleikini Kealiikui Kamehameha o
Iolani i Kaiwikapu kaui Ka Liholiho Kūnuiākea.

June is National Rose Month
President Ronald Reagan signed legislation in 1986 that made the rose the
United States' National Floral Emblem. People everywhere have been
passionate about roses for centuries. Roses represent beauty and love to
millions. Roses are an ancient symbol of festivals and the commemoration
of historic events. Our name Roselani is always of interest,
Lokelani Rose Flower of Maui
especially to folks outside of Maui. It is the “Americanization” of the
Hawaiian word Lokelani, which means “heavenly rose” and is Maui’s official flower.
Did You Know These Facts About Roses?
 More than 1.2 BILLION fresh cut roses are sold each year.
 The world's oldest living rose is thought to be 1,000 years old. Today it continues to flourish on the
wall of the Hildesheim Cathedral of Germany.
 The rose is the favorite flower of 85 percent of Americans.
 Thousands of songs have been sung about roses, including, “Red Roses for a Blue Lady,” “Ramblin’
Rose,” “My Wild Irish Rose,” “Everything’s Comin’ Up Roses,” “Yellow Rose of Texas,” “Days of Wine
and Roses,” and, of course, “Mama Liked the Roses,” a song recorded by Elvis Presley in 1969. The
Tournament of Roses began in 1890 as a festival. In 1902, a football game was added for entertainment.

started as a server in the Dining
Room. After five years, Mona
took off for one year and has been
with us ever since! Today she is
the Dining Room Supervisor!
Her main concern is to serve our
clients. A couple of our residents
were asked to give their opinion
about Mona and said that Mona
knows the residents and their needs. They also said that
Mona helps in many sensitive situations. She cares for the
residents and in the dining room, she is very versatile.
Nalani Freitas, resident assistant from Aloha Gardens
quotes, “Auntie Mona is very honest, hardworking, reliable
and thoughtful! I love when she brings in her goodies that
she makes, and shares with the employees. She also is
known for sharing her famous recipes with workers and
supporting the kids with their fundraisers!”
During the transition of our new Food Service Manager,
Mona stepped up to the plate and made the transition for
him to ease into the department. She is cross-trained in all
