Two high schools. One lunch hour. Outside is the story of Daniel, a teen who triumphs over homophobic bullying, depression and suicide. At his new school he shares his story at a meeting of the Gay Straight Alliance. Meanwhile, at his old school, struggling to come to terms with what happened, his friends Krystina and Jeremy attempt to start their own GSA. Through flashbacks, we travel through Daniel’s harrowing experience with bullying that began with a taunt and a text message and eventually led to a serious physical assault. The Money Tree explores the concept of ‘value’ through the journeys of Shasta and Simon. When Shasta’s father loses his job, she is devastated to learn that previously laid plans for her upcoming birthday party must be significantly downsized. Shasta and Simon meet a mysterious Traveler who gives them a seed that will make a tree grow leaves of money. The children are given two rules to obey - rules they find hard to follow. Through a truly magical journey, the two ultimately learn that in the end, our friends, family and imaginations are truly our greatest assets. Jamie Cavanaugh has a problem. She’s always going too fast. “Slow down!” say her parents. “Pay attention!” says her teacher; but Jamie just can’t calm down or stay focussed. The Incredible Speediness of Jamie Cavanaugh explores, with humour, insight and compassion, the hurt and confusion of being different when you can’t help it, and the challenges of being the target of school yard bullying. The hero of this remarkable play is a positive role model for young people with ADHD or other learning challenges. “Every young person deserves to feel safe at school. Sadly, this is not always the case for our LGBTQ youth, many of whom endure hateful comments and abuse. Outside uses the power of theatre to illustrate the devastating impact of homophobic bullying. Every student and teacher should see it.” -Jill Holroyd, Toronto PFLAG “As in many communities in Ontario, we have a diverse student population, some of whose parents struggle financially. The Money Tree was able to shed light on the importance of maintaining healthy friendships with others who may not have the ability to purchase items that many students think are a necessity.” -Ellis Nyman, Principal, ADSB “Jamie Cavanaugh is smart, charismatic, feisty, and fiercely determined. She is also suffering from a physiological condition not of her making, which affects her behaviour. And yet this play is only peripherally about ADHD and its symptoms. The play really is about how young people deal with significant problems in their lives. It is about the nature of friendship. It is about understanding others, and the essence of empathy. It is about storytelling itself, and that everyone has a fascinating and unique story to tell.” -Richard Greenblatt, Director Single performances (in your school) start at $650 (plus HST).
