SCOPE OF WORK
Maintain Fire Suppression Systems on Mobile/Field Support Equipment at Rössing
This contract will provide for quarterly services and repairs by an approved Fire Suppression
Systems Supply and Maintenance company as an inspection of work that was carried out by
Rössing personnel during their normal duties.
1. Inclusions:
1. Labour cost to carry out said services per machine / service / machine.
2. Travelling cost at per km rate.
3. Ten days to complete one round of services (e.g. per quarter).
2. Exclusions:
1. Cost for spare parts used during repair work.
2. Any after-hours work.
3. Additional repairs as requested by Rössing

The total number of equipment can change as equipment are scraped or replaced and need to be
reviewed annually.
4. The Maintenance Programme must include:

Carry out pre-task risk assessment.
Apply your personal lock in accordance to the isolation procedure.
Disconnect the squib and actuation cartridges before working on the system.
Check the fire system piping/wiring network for any physical damage and/or defects such
as damaged fittings, corrosion and chafing.
5. Check that all safety seals and actuators are still intact.
6. Check that all brackets are still secure and without defects such as cracks, corrosion or
broken off.
7. Check that all connections to and from the main cylinders are intact and in correct order.
8. Ensure that the safety relieve valve and non-return valves are in good working condition
and in the correct order.
9. Ensure that all nozzles and nozzle blow-off caps are in place.
10. Check the condition of all actuation and distribution hoses and ensure that there are no
obstacles obscuring the nozzles.
11. Check for to tight bends that will compromise the distribution network by creating
blockages. Reroute the piping if and when needed.
12. Lubricate all moving parts of the fire suppression system. These include:
a. All gaskets and O-rings.
b. Clean and lubricate actuation devices such as actuation pins and pistons.
13. Blow out all distribution hoses with nitrogen or dry air and check that all blow-off caps
were dislodged.
14. Check the pressure on the main pressure gauge and record the pressure.
15. Weigh and record the weight of the actuation cartridges.
16. Test the fire control panel with a simulator.
17. Check liner detection wire for any damage, chafing, to tight bends or too close to known
heat sources.
18. Test the fire control panel batteries with a multi-meter.
19. Test the linear detection wire by simulating a fire condition.
20. Check routing of linear detection wire and condition of the end of line resistor.
21. Renew service label. Ensure it is visible for inspection and display the service date and
next service due date.
22. A full discharge test is to be conducted only if there is sufficient stock to recharge the
system. This test is to be conducted in the presence of the nominated Rössing personnel.
Both parties are to verify the effectiveness/application of the sprayers.
23. Complete the service / inspection work sheet:
a. Record any abnormalities or problems found on the particular machine.
b. Present the report for signature to the responsible Rösssing personnel. These are
the area’s Foreman and Chief Fire Officer or his designate and the area
Superintendent.
c. Record all spares required to bring the particular machine back to standard and
present evidence to the area Foreman for confirmation of spares used.
d. Provide the area Foreman with a copy of the inspection certificate for record.
e. File a copy of each inspection certificate for own future reference.
MAINTAIN AND SERVICE FIRE EQUIPMENT ON SITE AND RÖSSING OFFICES AND
ACCOMMODATION IN SWAKOPMUND
Provision of Qualified Fire Equipment Service and Maintenance Personnel; personnel with the
South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) qualifications or equivalent and a good
understanding of NFPA 10 standards will be an added advantage.
Contractor’s responsibilities:
1. Carry out scheduled checks and tagging of all fire extinguishers, hose-reels and hydrants
on the mine and Rössing offices and accommodation places in Swakopmund.
1.1 Fire equipment tagging (service labelling) shall be done at the beginning of each year.
1.2 Fire equipment shall be serviced after two or six months depending on the risk
associated with the area where they are located.
1.3 Inspections shall be done physically in terms of NFPA 10(98), Sections 4-3.1 and 43.2
2. Recharge service for all used fire extinguishers.
2.1 Empty fire extinguishers shall be stored in a workshop on site and the supplier will be
summoned to refill these.
2.2 Rössing shall provide refilling tools and facilities.
3. Service and repair faulty hose-reels and hydrants found during inspections and charge
separately.
4. The contractor personnel shall be available on standby (24 hours a day) for breakdowns
on fixed mobile fire systems on the mines HME. Protection Services will first attempt to
repair the fixed mobile fire system on the HME and if unable to repair it, Protection
Services will initiate a call-out for the contractor personnel on standby to proceed to the
mine and repair the fire system.
5. The contractor shall create auditable record of all firefighting equipment including service
intervals and submit a report to the Chief Fire Officer after every service.

The contractor shall provide safety clothing as required by and to the Rössing standard.
Rössing shall provide, or cause to be provided by others, to the contractor, the following
services at no cost to the contractor:
 Provision of a suitable workshop and equipment for the duration of the assignment at a level
which allows the contractor personnel to perform the services adequately.
 Provision of adequate levels of disposable items, consumables and equipment as deemed
appropriate by the contractor in consultation with the Rössing’s management.
 Additional training (Rössing induction and standards) as may be required by the Rössing’s
working regulations.
 Servicing and maintenance of the recharge equipment and facility, it being understood that
maintenance in this sense does not include the normal housekeeping and sanitation
responsibilities assumed by the contractor personnel.

Submit proof and list recent projects of a similar nature and magnitude carried out.
Submit proof of qualifications and experiences of human resources that are available for the
execution of such work.
Insurances
The contractor must be insured against claims covering workers' compensation, property
damage, and personal liability in case of accidents. Subcontractor must be adequately insured as
well against various losses.
Health, Safety and Environment
The contractor and subcontractors are required to adhere to all legal Health, Safety and
Environment Standards and regulations and will be subject to HSE requirements set by Rössing.
Contractors to submit proof of their HSE policies and standards.
