voice, pitch and choice of words can
manifest many things. Through the
power of speech, the varied and
multilayered meanings of words,
we have an incredible resource for
communication and creation.
Dear Rotarians, Anns and Annets,
In my tenure of close to 9 months as Bulletin Editor
for our Rotary Club of Kazhakuttom, I have written
editorials mostly with the intent to impart as much
knowledge as possible about the current socioeconomic situations to our Rotarians, Anns and Annets.
Not that our rotarians are any less knowledgeable
than me in these matters but seldom get enough time
to read through the abundance of reading material
around us in our daily life. As an Editor, I consider this
my duty to share with my fellow rotarians what I come
across which I think could help everyone and light up
their lives and thus light up Rotary. This time I chose
to write few lines on the strength or rather power of
speech. Read several articles and this one struck to my
mind; so I am sharing it with you all.
We constantly use the power of speech to create
the world we live in; it can be boring, full of anxiety
and disasters, or it can be full of joy and positive
experiences. How you describe your life is how it will
be. We are responsible for our speech and the effect
these words have on others.
There is a great responsibility in what is said and what
is set in motion through these speeches. From the
movie “Cleopatra”, we had one of the greatest actors,
Richard Burton, in the role of Marc Antony, whose
speech delivered on the occasion of the funeral of
Julius Caesar will remain in the minds and heart of
those who watched this movie forever. It was one of
the greatest speeches I ever heard.
In a yoga class a student discovered that she had based
her idea of her intelligence on negative remarks she
heard when she was seven years old. We have all taken
in opinions of others about our beauty, our creativity,
our body shapes, our abilities and have realized the
power of speech to stick in the mind and influence who
we are and what we do. We see how in a few seconds
emotionally charged words can affect us and our lives
for years. Speech can hurt and speech can heal; it can
start wars or resolve an argument; it can encourage
confidence in a young person or destroy self-esteem.
Marcus Antonius (Mark Antony) was one of the
Triumvirs (leaders) who ruled Rome following Julius
Caesar’s assassination. Mark Antony was famous for
his speech, which turned the Romans against Brutus
following his group’s assassination of Caesar. Such was
the power of his speech.
Having discussed the power of speech to this extent,
my thoughts go back to education and communication.
Speech is a part of communication. A good speaker
has to have perfect knowledge and control over the
language he uses to deliver his speech and the subject
that he wishes to communicate. Then only he can
deliver great speeches.
Years later when she began to question the purpose of
her life and ask “Who am I?” she started to uncover
what she had held in her mind for so long. Through the
practice of reflection she caught the negative thoughts
and saw how she had accepted someone else’s
definition of who she was. She had a choice whether
to continue within the limitations or to break free. She
realized her negative image didn’t belong and began to
affirm her intelligence, and detached the influence of
the wrong definition she had the misfortune to listen
to when she was so young.
So, my dear Rotarians, Anns and Annets, give due
importance to education at all times. By receiving
excellent education, communication by good speeches
become easy and pleasurable to all. Let us light up the
lives of our youngsters with excellent education and
thus light up rotary.
Why is speech so powerful? The power of speech
spoken aloud or voiced in our heads combines sound
and purpose. From the babbling that babies make
to ensure their survival to our ability to express

A man was in a bar in France where he met a lady who only spoke
french. Problem was he only spoke English. However, that did not
deter her. She drew a martini glass on a napkin. The gentleman
realize she wanted a drink so he bought her one. A little while later
she drew on another napkin two people dancing, so he figured she
wanted to dance. Shortly thereafter she drew a bed. The man’s only
thought was, “How did she know I was a furniture sales man?”

President’s Message
Dear Rotarians, Anns and Annets,
My conversation this time is motivated by several important things. Together
with the international community, we have observed Women’s Day with a
befitting function at Government Women’s I.T.I., Kazhakuttom on 16th March
2015. District Panchayat President Mrs.Ansajitha Russel inaugurated the
programs. On the occasion, Dr.Madhuravally Thamby was honored with a
Club Rotary Award – Women of the Year 2015. My cordial thanks to Rtn.
Dr.Saravanakumar and Rtn.Jeeva who took pains to make it a successful
program!
More exciting is the news about the RYLA planned to be conducted by our Club from 10th to
12th April 2015 at Animation Center, Kovalam. This is going to be one of our prestigious programs
this year. RYLA will admit 40 delegates and we have 40 plus Rotarians with us. I place on each
one of our Rotarians the responsibility to find out a delegate for the RYLA. Very prominent and
motivating trainers dealing with youth subjects are booked for the program. In any case, the
event will be really unique to reach out to the wider communities beyond Rotary. Get up and
work out your plan for the Club. Only 20 days are left for us to make it great. The countdown has
already started.
This year the family tour is planned as a luxury trip to Thekkady with 30 families during three days
from 15th to 17th May 2015. We will spend three days together enjoying the travel time, five star
dinners, comfortable stay in a cool, lovable, natural ambience, world class facilities at a world
class resort. Around 30 families are already registered and I remind others to register as early as
possible and be there for sure. President- Elect Rtn.Meenakumaran Nair does systematic hard
work with the organizing team.
Rtn.Upendran and Rotary Ann C.Jayantha personally came to our Club and invited all of us to
participate in the marriage of their daughter, Rotary Annet Lekshmi, on 4th April 2015 at Al Saj
Convention Center. That was great indeed!
I very sincerely thank Rtn.Pradeep Kumar for organizing the weekly meeting last week as RICOW.

Er. G Anil, our guest speaker, is presently the Joint
Director & heading the Small Hydro Power Division
of Energy Management Centre (EMC)-Kerala actively
involved in the consultancy assignments related to small
hydro power & energy conservation. He is a member
of the Small Hydro Promotion Cell under Power Dept,
Govt. of Kerala for promoting the opening up of Hydro
Electric Schemes for implementation through private
participation, formulating investor friendly guidelines
and is a consultant of the UNIDO Regional Centre for
Small Hydro Power Projects which covers the region of
Asia & Africa.
Among other achievements, he has
33 years of industrial experience
in the field of Rotating Machinery,
Hydro Electric Power Projects &
related Consultancy assignments.

Minutes of the Meeting No.1225 on 14th March 2015
Weekly meeting No.1225 was called to order at 8 PM on 14th March 2015 by President
Rtn.Jerry Fernandez. Rotary invocation was led by Rtn.V.Varghese. Welcome address
was made by Rtn.Dr.T.V.Saravanakumar who also presented a plan of action for the
observance of International Women’s Day.
Rtn.Upendran extended a cordial invitation to all the members of the Club to
participate in the marriage of his daughter on 4th April 2015 at Al Saj Convention
Center, Kazhakuttom. President in his address spoke about the Sister Club agreement
made with RC of Iba in the Philippines. Secretary read the Sister Club Agreement
made between RC of Iba and RC of Kazhakuttom.

This was followed by the feedback of Rtn.John Joseph and Rtn. Saji Varghese. Both of them informed that
they and their families were very happy to be inducted as Rotarians in an excellent function accompanied
by quality entertainments.
Rtn.Johnson Peter announced that the first death anniversary functions for his deceased wife Mrs.Jessy
Peter would be held at 11 AM on 21st March 2015 with a Holy Mass at St.Joseph’s Church, Kazhakuttom
and a lunch at the Church hall. He invited all the members to participate in the function and pray for the
dear departed.
Rtn.Meenakumaran Nair reminded about the family tour and requested the members to register with an
advance of Rs.5000/- as early as possible to enable him to make necessary arrangements well in advance.
He suggested a special meeting at 7.30 PM on 17th March 2015.
Rtn.Pradeep Kumar cast a warm vote of thanks to all and announced that RYLA would be held from 10th to
12th April 2015. After National Anthem, the meeting was adjourned for food and fellowship.

FROM THE LAWYER’S CORNER
RIGHT OF CHILDREN TO FREE AND COMPULSORY EDUCATION ACT 2009
9. Duties of local authority:(a)Provide free and compulsory elementary
education to every child:
Provided that where a child is admitted by
his or her parents or guardian, as the case
may be, in a school other than a school
established, owned controlled or financed by
funds provided directly or indirectly by the
appropriate Government or a local authority,
such child or his or parents or guardian, as
the case may be, shall not be entitled to claim
reimbursement of expenditure incurred on
elementary education in such other school;
(b) ensure availability of a neighborhood
school as specified in Section 6;
(c) ensure that the child belonging to
weaker section and the child belonging
to disadvantaged group are not
discriminated against and prevented from
pursuing and completing elementary
education on any grounds;
(d) maintain records of children upto the
age of fourteen years residing within its
jurisdiction, in such manner as may be
prescribed;
(e)ensure and monitor
admission,
attendance and completion of elementary
education by every
child residing within
its jurisdiction;
(f) provide infrastructure including school building, teaching
staff and training materials;
(g) provide special training facility specified in
section 4;
(h) ensure good quality elementary
education conforming to the norms and
standards specified in the schedule;
(i) ensure timely prescribing of curriculum
and courses of study for elementary
education;
(j) provide training facility for teachers;
(k) ensure admission of children of migrated
families;
(l) monitor functions of schools within its
jurisdiction; and

(m) decide the academic calendar.
!0. Duty of parents and guardian.
It shall be the duty of every parent or
guardian to admit or cause to be admitted
his or child or ward, as the case may be, to an
elementary education in the neighborhood
school.
11. Appropriate Government to provide for
pre-school education.
With a view to prepare children above the
age of three years for elementary education
and to provide early childhood education for
all children until they complete the age of
six years, the appropriate Government may
make necessary arrangement for providing
free pre-school education for such children.

Detailed history taking and physical
examination of the couple are done first.
Abdominal examination and vaginal
examination of the female partner to
detect any abdominal mass. Abnormal
vaginal discharge, terderness (pain during
examination), Nodules in the adnexa, vaginal
septum etc.
30 years and six months in which woman is
over 30 years of age. 10 – 15% of the couples
belonging to reproductive age group are
affected by infertility. The cause of infertility
can be female causes (30%) male causes
(30%) both male and female causes (30%)
(or) unexplained causes (10%).
The male partner is examined for the size
of the testis, varicocele, (Engorged veins in
the scrotum), Cryptorchidism (undescented
testis), absence of vas (tubes which transport
semen to outside), any mass tenderness,
inguinal hernia etc.
The male causes are mainly due to seminal
abnormalities like Oligospermia (less than 15
million sperms in one ml) Asthenospermia
(less than 60% of active & slow progressive
Poly cystic ovarian disease (PCOD) in now
common among women of reproductive age

which is characterized by Anovulation (No
ovarian is produced) Hirsutism (Excessive
hair growth) and Obesity. Diagnosis is
confirmed by ultrasound examination.
Presence of more than ten small cysts 0.5
- 1mm along the periphery giving rise to
“Necklace appearance” on ultrasound.

International Women’s Day
RCK Kazhakuttom celebrate international women’s day at Government women’s ITI at
Kazhakuttom on Monday 16 March. District Panchayat President Ansajitha Russel Inaugurated
the function. RCK President Rtn. Jerry Fernandez, Dr. Madhuravalli Thambi, wellknown
Gynaecologist and Rtn. Dr. T.V. Saravanakumar spoke about the importance of the day. Many
students from the institute participated in this event. Vote of thanks was offerd by Rtn. S.S.
Jeeva.
