Club Program April / May 2015 Club Program April‐May 2015 April 28, 2015 May 5, 2015 June 30, 2015 Chairman John van Holsteyn The theme for Charter Anniversary this year will be “Looking Back To The Future” The evening will be at Dorset Gardens Hotel. Chairman Ross Taylor Gloria Hargraves in her role as Chairman of Rotarians Against Malaria (RAM) will speak to us about this program. Once Polio has been eradicated will Rotary turn its attention to Malaria? Changeover Dinner Diary Dates Charter Anniversary April 28 Change Over June 30 President’s Report
Our ANZAC remembrance this week was very moving and inspirational, as you’ll see when reading the chairman’s report. John Hexter’s plea to all in attendance to remember the Police Force was very fitting, not only because they were supposedly the target for terrorist attacks, but also because they protect us on our home soil. On Wednesday, Croydon Rotary was represented at the Maroondah Schools Centenary ANZAC Service at Ringwood Lake, where we helped Ringwood Rotary with the ushering of the nearly 700 students into the seating area. The speaker, Colonel John Coulson (Ret), related the recording his father had made of a conversation he had with his dad, John’s grandfather, who was in the landing party at Gallipoli. Starting with the innocent desire to see something of the world to the raw realisation he was in the war arena where so many soldiers were killed. It was a story that many students will remember for the rest of their lives (sounds more impressive than if I were to say that I’ll remember it for the rest of my life). Meanwhile, David is trekking the Kokoda Trail with another 40 Rotarians as part of the ANZAC Centenary. He sees it as a personal challenge, but it obviously is an act of service above self through his fundraising. Is anyone aware whether there is a swimming event that David could take part in, so to complete his triathlon? Hope to see many of you at our charter night this week! Please advise Jean that you are attending. We have a look at the history of our Club, before showcasing Rotary Exchange with perspectives from all angles, including a presentation by one of our exchange students in the late 1990s. There will be an opportunity for all that have been involved in the exchange program to share their experiences. John Chairman’s Report 21st April Our meeting on Tuesday was our spirit of the ANZAC themed event. Yes we had a few technical difficulties (we'd be lost without Brian McDaid) and a position change, but honouring those who have served and made the ultimate sacrifice just so we can enjoy the freedom we have today puts it all into perspective. Our speaker for the night was Barry Brewer who at the tender age of 19 first joined the Australian Army. Barry reached the rank of WO2 and finally retired from the service in 2001, his knowledge, passion, and dedication was clearly portrayed as he told stories of some of our VC recipients and decorated war nurses. What was great to see was the unexpected participation of some of our members, it just goes to show that the spirit of the ANZAC has touched us all in some way or another. A big shout out and thank you to John Hexter for organising Barry to come along to our meeting and I would like to leave you with the front page of the handout that Barry left us: ANZAC ANZAC STANDS FOR COURAGE, LOYALTY, AND MATESHIP; IT STANDS FOR FIGHTING FOR ONE'S FREEDOM AND THE FREEDOM OF ONE'S FELLOW COUNTRYMEN; IT STANDS FOR RESILIENCE AND PERSISTENCE UNDER THE MOST HORRIBLE AND HOPELESS FIGHTING CONDITIONS. FINALLY, IT STANDS FOR ONE'S OWN CONFIDENCE IN HIM OR HERSELF TO COMPLETE THE TASK. Thank you all...... Lest we forget. Rowan Cole. Rotarians Against Malaria. On Tuesday May 5, 2015 Gloria Hargreaves , the Ambassador for RAM, will speak at our Club on this RAWCS Program. For additional info see the link: http://www.ram.rawcs.com.au/ If you are interested to learn more about this topic why not consider the following: “A team of Motor Bike riders from the Rotary Club of Williamtown in NSW, led by Steve Carroll are riding around Australia to highlight the effect malaria has had on Australians fighting in tropical countries, and to report on the efforts to eradicate malaria, particularly in Papua New Guinea. The ride began on Mar 2 in Newcastle, and is planned to finish there in time for Malaria Awareness Day on April 30th. They will be speaking at the Rotary Club of North Balwyn's meeting at Kew Golf Club on Thursday April 16th. Visitors will be welcome at RC North Balwyn for our meeting on Thursday night April 16th.”
