Volume 46 No. 37
Chartered 26th April 1971 by the Rotary Club of Port Macquarie Website: www.rotarypmwest.org.au PO Box 330, Port Macquarie NSW 2444 Apologies for meetings please call Barry Bird (02) 65826633 Presidents Thoughts
A very interesting talk on Malaria and what Rotary is trying to do about it. I was pleased to see so many members but the Rotary RAM badge. At our board meeting we decided to give another $500.00 to RAM as a gesture of support. When the Polio work is finally done I suspect the full force of Rotary’s abilities will be brought to bear against Malaria. Seven Hundred Thousand people die from it each year! We have two applicants for the National Youth Science School, so it will be interesting to see if both can get selected. Our district only gets to send 17 students so the competition is hard. The cluster meeting on Thursday night met most of the incoming Presidents and the new AG. The Port club reminded us that they have a Trivia on the 2nd May. Also the Wauchope Club will be having their 70/80's dance at the Wauchope RSL on the same night. So we have a choice of events for that night. Remember next week is the special ANZAC night and we need as many partners as possible to balance something like 35 Visitors. President: Peter Gray President Elect: Keiren Freeman, Vice President: John Channon, Secretary: Stephen Maxwell, Treasurer: Peter Kenny Rotary Foundation and International: David Gleeson, Membership: Trevor Gilson Vocational: Darrel Moore, Community Service: Rick Eller, Club Administration: Barry Bird, Youth Director: Helen Gleeson, Past President: John Harlow Visitors

Wednesday’s are always difficult to fill as many of our members are tied up in the Sailability Program. District Assembly – 3rd May – Coincides with Ironman. Ironman – Please consider assisting with the Ironman. If we can offer 20+ volunteers, we should receive in excess of $500 again for our trouble, which is great. Anzac Day Tribute night – Please email Barry Hacker, names of any guests attending. Also, please pay Barry Bird for your dinner costs asap to save congestion at the door on the evening. 2nd May – Pier One Panthers Club – Trivia night to raise funds for Rotary Lodge. Please contact David Symonds if you would like to put a table together for the evening. Book now for our weekend away in South West Rocks, South West Rocks Tourist Park 29th and 30th May. OUR OBJECTIVE -‐ The prevention of mortality, and a reduction in morbidity and social and economic loss caused by malaria through a progressive improvement and strengthening of local and national capabilities in malaria control. Rotarians Against Malaria is a project of Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) with the project covering: Australia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Timor Leste. Key facts • Malaria is a life-‐threatening disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected mosquitoes. • In 2013, malaria caused an estimated 584 000 deaths (with an uncertainty range of 367 000 to 755 000), mostly among African children. • Malaria is preventable and curable. • Increased malaria prevention and control measures are dramatically reducing the malaria burden in many places. • Non-‐immune travellers from malaria-‐free areas are very vulnerable to the disease when they get infected. According to the latest estimates, released in December 2014, there were about 198 million cases of malaria in 2013 (with an uncertainty range of 124 million to 283 million) and an estimated 584 000 deaths (with an uncertainty range of 367 000 to 755 000). Malaria mortality rates have fallen by 47% globally since 2000, and by 54% in the WHO African Region. Most deaths occur among children living in Africa where a child dies every minute from malaria. Malaria mortality rates among children in Africa have been reduced by an estimated 58% since 2000. Malaria is caused by Plasmodium parasites. The parasites are spread to people through the bites of infected Anopheles mosquitoes, called "malaria vectors", which bite mainly between dusk and dawn. Malaria Bed Nets James Cook University PHD Study by a student from the Soloman Islands. JCU has supported this program with a scholarship and is waiving all tuition fees for this program. $10 is the cost of a net and you can purchase a RAM lapel pin for $10 which covers the cost of a net for someone. The impact the implementation of the nets and Malaria education programs in the villages is life changing. They children are healthier and able to learn at school. The community is tidy and no stagnant water is lying around which alleviates the source of the problem. “Permanets” were all made Blue in colour but in PNG, many of the men were using the nets and were not allowing the women and children to use the nets because of the colour. They are now manufacturing the nets in a lovely pink colour. ANZAC Tribute Night
