Ganny is a 60ft traditional narrowboat which
was built in 1996 by Les Allen. Les Allen’s
Oldbury yard was a part of the BCN back in
the days of the working boats, and building
continued there until 1997. The craft that were
created there are distinctive and always highly
sought after. They simply look right, because
they are right.
Ganny has a well deck covered by a cratch
cover and a glazed wooden deck board. The
main entrance to the boat is from the well
deck into the saloon, which has freestanding
seating and is heated by a solid fuel stove with
a back boiler. The galley has units on both the
port and starboard side. Fitted with laminate
work surfaces, the galley is equipped with a
Vanette gas 4-ring hob, oven and grill. There
is also a 12v fridge. The bathroom is located
off a port side corridor between the galley
and the bedroom, and in the corridor is a set
of side doors with traditional roses and castles
decoration by Dave Moore. The bathroom has
a Thetford Cassette toilet with a spare cassette,
a basin set into a cupboard unit and a ¾ bath
with a shower over. The bedroom has a fixed
double bed and a full height wardrobe. The
engine room is entered from the bedroom
via a port side door. The engine room houses
an original marine Lister FR2 engine with a
Blackstone 2:1 reduction gearbox. The engine
is controlled by traditional speedwheel and
push pull controls. The engine room also has
side doors on both the port and starboard
side. To the stern of the boat is a boatman’s
cabin in the traditional style, also decorated
with roses and castles decoration by Dave
Moore and the wood work is traditionally
grained. The back cabin has a double cross
bed, bench seating and is heated by a Classic
solid fuel range that has a small oven for
cooking. Externally the boat has traditional
decoration, again by Dave Moore.
