RENCANA RUNCIT
ARE YOUR
SYSTEMS
GSTREADY?
As you are aware, Malaysia will start to implement the goods and services
tax (GST) on 1 April, 2015. When this kicks-off, business owners like
yourself will need to file tax returns regularly. You will also need to manage
your payment records properly to claim back your input tax credits.
!
It is compulsory for retailers with an annual sales turnover of more than
RM500,000 to register with the Royal Malaysian Customs Department for
the implementation of GST before 31 Dec 2014. Those who fail to comply can
be penalised up to RM20,000.
!
Registration can be made online at http://gst.customs.gov.my or walk-in to
The Royal Malaysian Customs Department. Businesses with an annual sales
turnover of RM500,000 and below are recommended to register voluntarily.

RENCANA RUNCIT
To prepare your business before the day comes, you should start adopting best
practises to keep track of your finances today. While many of you already have a
system of record-keeping and accounting, here are 3 tips you can start now to help
ease your transition into GST:
!
!
1.File your invoices
!
As simple as it sounds, you should get into
the habit of filing all your suppliers’ invoices.
This is especially important because when
GST starts, you will need all your suppliers’
tax invoices to support your input tax claims
(refer to the previous issue on ‘input tax’ and
‘tax invoice’).
!
Also, all your suppliers’ invoices must be
made to your company’s name and address.
If a tax invoice does not have both your company’s name and address, then that
invoice shall only be qualified for an input tax claim of up to RM20.
!
!
!
2. Use a GST-ready system
!
If you manage your accounts by yourself, you can
either track your GST numbers manually or
invest in a computerised system to make the
process easier. There are many accounting
systems in the market, but The Royal Malaysian
Customs Department, who are the governing GST
body, will only recognise systems that are
certified as GST-ready. Be diligent to close your
accounts after each day as you can only claim
input tax on your invoices within 28 days.
!
If you outsource your accounting, talk to your
accountant. Find out what software he uses, and
ask if GST-certified. You can also visit http://gst.customs.gov.my/en/ib/Pages/
ib_ppp.aspx for the latest list of approved Accounting Software Vendors in Malaysia.

3. Upgrade your POS systems
!
You must ensure that your POS systems and
cash registers print GST-compliant receipts for
your customers. Talk to your POS system
vendor today. Ask him if your current system is
GST-ready and if it can record your output tax
automatically and print your daily sales with
GST summaries.
!
!
!
!
!
With GST around the corner, it is best to get into the habit of keeping good records
and making sure your systems are GST-ready. We have covered some basic GST
must-knows in our previous issue (issue 38) or contact your
accountant for advice.
!
You may also contact The Royal Malaysian Customs
Department at 1300-888-500 (Mon-Fri, 8am – 5pm)
for more advice and information. Alternatively, visit

5 THINGS
YOU DIDN’T KNOW
ABOUT SOCSO
One day, your loyal, permanent staff, Ali met with a motorbike accident while
delivering some goods. He was hospitalised. He also required physiotherapy and
was out of action for 3 weeks. You start wondering how are you going to pay for
Ali’s medical expenses? Then, you realise that you have been paying SOCSO every
month for Ali. You feel relieved. So how can SOSCO help you and Ali? Let’s take a
look.
!
SOCSO is The Social Security Organisation established in 1971 to provide insurance
coverage for staff against job injuries and disabilities, workplace accidents,
occupational diseases and death. In Bahasa Malaysia, it is known as PERKESO, or
Pertubuhan Keselamatan Sosial.
!
Note that SOCSO only covers Malaysian workers and permanent residents. If you
have foreign workers, you can make a contribution of RM72 a year to any of 28
insurance firms appointed by the Ministry of Human Resource.
!
Here are 5 facts about SOCSO which you may not be aware of:
!
!
1. One of the cheapest forms of insurance
SOCSO is a generally inexpensive. You pay 1.75% of your staff’s salary (up to a
maximum of RM51.65 per month) while your staff pays 0.5% of his salary (up to a
maximum of RM14.75 per month).
!
Monthly contributions can be as low as 50 sen to a maximum of RM66.40 per
employee. For example, if Ali’s salary is RM900 per month, the monthly
contribution is RM19.10.

accidents or occupational diseases during his employment.
!
SOCSO will pay Ali for his medical and hospital care allowances. SOSCO will even
provide Ali with physiotherapy, and a wheelchair if necessary. If Ali became
permanently disabled, for example, lost his eyesight because of the accident, SOCSO
will also provide compensation.
!
!
3. Free Health Checks
SOCSO provides free health screenings to employees aged 40 years and above at
their panel of clinics. For women aged 40 years and above, SOCSO also provides
free mammogram screening. These health screening are redeemable via vouchers.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT
COUGH MEDICINE
“Learn about the
different types of cough
medicines, which
include expectorant,
suppressant and a
combination of both”
!
Your shoppers got a cold and need medicine for a nagging cough? While there is no
quick fix, some over-the-counter (OTC) cough syrups and cough medicines may give
your shoppers the relief they need. But while there are many, many brands of OTC
cough medicines, did you know that not all them are the same?
!
As they all don’t fulfill the same solution, it is best if you could inform your
shoppers what to look out for when selecting a cough medicine:
!
• Check the ingredients. Make sure you're getting what you need, either a
suppressant, expectorant or a combination of both.
!
• Always measure the correct dose. Overdoses can lead to serious health
problems such as brain damage, seizure, or worse, death.
!
• Keep away from young children. If a child is ill, seek doctor’s advice. Don't give
cough and cold medicine to children under age 4.
!
• Always read the label. To understand how to take it, common side effects, and
any warnings to be aware of.
!
• Cough medicine should not be used for more than 7 days. It could be covering
up a more serious problem. You should see a doctor.
!
It is important to understand how the cough medicine works. This includes
knowing what the side effects are. Consult your doctor if you have any concerns.
Trust your doctor to make the best decision with your overall health in mind.
RMM39
KATEGORI RUNCIT
Three basic types of cough medicines are available OTC for the temporary relief of
cough caused by a cold or bronchitis. These are:
!
1. Expectorants An expectorant is a drug that thins mucus so you can cough it up easier. While
many experts say that drinking water is the most effective way to loosen mucus,
you can also use such medications as guaifenesin to thin mucus so it can be cleared
from the airway. Clearing thick mucus from the airways can decrease coughing.
!
2. Suppressants Cough suppressants relieve cough by blocking the cough reflex. If you have a dry,
hacking cough, the active ingredient, dextromethorphan may give you relief.
Generally, this type of cough medicine is not used to suppress a cough where you
cough up mucus. Other traditional cough suppressants ingredients include
camphor, eucalyptus oil, and menthol.
!
3. Combination cough products As a combination of both expectorants and suppressants, it contains both
guaifenesin and dextromethorphan. This product may also contain additional
ingredients to help coat and soothe the throat, easing other related symptoms such
as a runny nose and a stuffy nose.

LEGACY
Successful business
passes the torch to a
new generation
Shahul Hamid and his family runs Hidayah Bazaar Enterprise. His father,
Mohamed Ibrahim opened the store in 2005 after their family’s nasi kandar
business became successful. Shahul credits his father for the success of Hidayah
Bazaar Enterprise. We speak to Shahul to find out more.
!
Could you tell us more about Hidayah Bazaar Enterprise?
My brother discovered this shoplot for rent in 2005. We jumped at the
opportunity, as our family was interested to diversify into retail. Business was
good and we managed to purchase the shoplot in 2007. Three years later, we
expanded to three shoplots. In 2012, we built a second floor to house additional
stock. We also purchased a 12-door refrigerator to stock frozen goods and keep
our wet produce fresh.
!
What did you learn from your father?
I learnt the tools of the trade. He taught me how to merchandise products and how
to speak to shoppers. He always told me look out for new business ideas. This
inspired me to modernise the business. I installed a CCTV system, switched to a
computerised POS terminal and applied to be a BSN agent. I also source for hardto-find products online.

WIRA RUNCIT
What were the key reasons behind your rapid expansion?
As a family-run business, we believe in treating our shoppers like family. We always
try to cater to their needs. This is why we began to sell fresh vegetables, fish,
electrical products and hardware in the store. In addition, we stock popular foreign
brands for our foreign shoppers. These include juices, puffed rice and instant
noodles. Moreover, our products are sold at reasonable prices. Many have become
return shoppers.
!
How do you obtain these foreign brands?
We approached suppliers and sourced for these products online. The most sought
after brands in our store include Hao Hao instant noodles that are popular with the
Vietnamese, and Pran branded puffed rice and juices for our Nepalese and
Bangladeshi shoppers.
What is Hidayah Bazaar Enterprise’s future plans?
We hope to open a second Hidayah Bazaar Enterprise combined with our nasi
kandar business, Nasi Kandar Hidayah in the near future.

CCTV SECURITY
Advantage of CCTV Systems for
your store
!
Mr Cheong installed a CCTV system when he noticed his
growing up milk products were stolen. After installing a
concealed CCTV system and monitoring the aisle for a few
days, he managed to catch the culprit and submitted the
recording to the police.
!
!
!
!
!
En Jamalludin places sweets and other small promo
product packs at his check-out counter. Recently,
after closing his accounts he realised that his
numbers don’t add up. Some of the products have
been stolen. After installing a visible CCTV just above
his check-out counter, he caught the culprit red
handed.
!
!
These are just a few examples for what a CCTV system can do to improve security in
your store. Most retail stores usually have smaller staff and it is difficult to keep an
eye on stock at all times. However, CCTV manufacturers have addressed this
problem with smaller, affordable units that is more appealing to retailers.
!
Here are a few advantages to installing a CCTV system in your store:
!
Recover Costs
By installing your CCTV in key areas such as the cashier counter and key shoplifting
aisles, it is possible to recuperate the costs of installing the CCTV in just a few short
months of reduced pilferage.
!
Discourages shoplifters
Installing CCTVs in obvious and visible areas discourages stealing, particularly when
they realise they are being recorded. Additionally, it may deter armed robbers from
striking your store, keeping your employees safer.

!
Monitor employees
Some employees do steal – that’s a reality of retail life. In this case, a concealed CCTV
can discover if you have a dishonest employee in your store. You could also monitor if
employees are working at their station, for example.
!
Help Resolve Disputes
Customer disputes about employees are one of the most difficult situations to handle.
Security cameras allow you to track transactions at the cashier counter and review
the situation objectively.
!
!
You will find CCTV systems of all shapes, sizes and types for sale. Research the best
ones for your use and add some security to your store for your sake, and that of your
employees. Also, with a data plan you can monitor your CCTV recording through
your smartphone, giving you peace of mind when you are away from your store.
