The ‘Big Day In’ event is a growing tech careers conference designed by students and facilitated by the ACS Foundation. Run over 2 days, the event brought together technology companies, universities, schools and over 1,500 high school students. The common purpose being to predict the jobs of the future and help students select the skills needed for those jobs. Each day kicked off with the ACS and Microsoft providing insights into our near future using machine based learning and holographic technology which will infuse every aspect of our lives. Wisetech Global discussed the practical work opportunities that await students in the tech sector. Seventeen year old Teigan Nield eloquently shared with students how he transitioned from school to work experience. Many other organisations including IBM, Westpac, CBA, Adobe, TCS, and Telstra also pulled back the curtains and helped students see the pathways and opportunities that await them. Each session included a Q&A component, so students could ask questions directly to the companies. Additionally, during the breaks, students talked with graduate and HR teams about work experience and the transition from school to work. Following lunch, students were enthralled with animation and effects insights from Animal Logic – animation creators of the Lego Movie, Happy Feet, 300, and the Great Gatsby. Animal Logic have recently conZirmed they will be animating two more Lego Movie spin-‐offs in Sydney – a $120 million boost to our economy which includes creating thousands of jobs. The day also included visits from The Flash and many prizes and giveaways, including an Xbox One, HP Stream 8’s, and Rasberry Pi’s. All of the information and action was well received. Lorna Reardon, Careers Adviser at Ryde Secondary College said, “It was In this week’s industry player profile interview we speak to David Magson, Group CEO, Mitrais. It was FANTASTIC AND WONDERFUL…the teachers learned so much and made so many good contacts and the students really got access to the sort of info they need to know.” With the mining boom winding down, it is important that students develop skills that will serve both themselves and our country well into the future. Tech skills are a global skill set that are needed in fashion, retail, manufacturing, entertainment, sales, and nearly every industry one can think of. Since this is such a critical area, key organisations have joined the ACS Foundation in supporting the ‘Big Day In’. The Australian Computer Society, Digital Careers and the Australian Government sponsor this initiative in addition to the 100+ participating companies and educational institutions. The ‘Big Day In’ is growing beyond Sydney, to other metro and regional Australian locations. This year, the ‘Big Day In’ will visit Ballarat, Melbourne, Canberra, Gold Coast, Newcastle, Wagga Wagga, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. These events will run between March and July 2015 and over 5,000 students are expected to attend. “Work experience opportunities are more than just rhetoric. The Australian Government provided students with IT Cadetship information for over 15 government departments. The ACS Foundation also awards over 350 work placements annually”, said John Ridge Executive Director ACS Foundation. The ACS Foundation was established in August in 2001 to encourage both private and public sponsorship of IT higher education and research. By increasing funding opportunities for industry to contribute to education programs, the Foundation seeks to create a highly skilled workforce, able to effectively access research and industry speciZic training. Since its establishment, the ACS Foundation has raised more than $25 million and awarded more than 2,000 scholarships. Whether it is a manufacturer looking at printing replacement parts on demand, or the health care industry Zinding ways to harness artiZicial intelligence to improve cancer diagnosis and treatments, the conZluence of business, technology, and science is being seen and felt across all markets and industries. Robert Hillard, Deloitte Consulting Managing Partner, said eight trends were selected that will disrupt the ways government and business engage with citizens, how work gets done and how markets and industries are evolving. “For the Zirst time in a number of years, these trends are being primarily driven from the enterprise rather than consumer products, making it more important than ever that organisations understand what is happening in the next eighteen months. Across the private and public sectors, business strategy is being transformed by the rapidly changing technology landscape. CIOs and technology professionals have an opportunity to vet, prioritise and invest in fast-‐paced technology developments. Deloitte’s Tech Trends 2015 report examines how some of the biggest macro technology forces — digital, analytics, cloud, the renaissance of core systems, cyber security, and the changing role of IT within the enterprise — are enabling historic advancements in business, government, and society. It also examines how they are fueling breakthroughs in materials science, medical science, artiZicial intelligence, and other exponentially changing domains. • • • Sample trends from The Fusion of Business and IT include: • Ambient Computing – Ambient computing is the backdrop of sensors, devices, intelligence, and agents that can put the Internet of Things to work. Possibilities abound from the tremendous growth of embedded sensors and connected devices — in the home, the enterprise, and the world at large. New business models will emerge this year as innovators purposefully bring smarter ‘things’ together • with analytics, security, data, and integration platforms to make the disparate parts work with each other. CIO as Chief Integration OfZicer – As technology transforms existing business models and gives rise to new ones; the role of CIO is evolving rapidly, with integration at the core of its mission. Increasingly, CIOs need to harness emerging, disruptive technologies for the business, while balancing future needs with today’s operational realities. They should view their responsibilities through an enterprise-‐wide lens, helping ensure critical domains like digital, analytics, and cloud aren’t spurring redundant, conZlicting, or compromised investments within departmental or functional silos. In this shifting landscape of opportunities and challenges, CIOs can be not only the connective tissue, but the driving force for intersecting, IT-‐heavy initiatives. Dimensional Marketing – Marketing has evolved signiZicantly in the last half-‐decade. The evolution of digitally-‐connected customers lies at the core, reZlecting the dramatic change in the dynamic between relationships and transactions. A new vision for marketing is emerging as CMOs and CIOs invest in technology for marketing automation, next-‐generation omni-‐channel approaches, content development, customer analytics, and commerce initiatives. This modern era for marketing is likely to bring new challenges in the dimensions of customer engagement, connectivity, data, and insight. IT Worker of the Future – While the scarcity of technical talent is a signiZicant concern offshoring is no longer a simple answer with many organisations facing talent gaps along multiple fronts. There are also unprecedented needs for new and different skill sets, including creative design, user experience engineering, and other disciplines grounded in the arts. To tackle these challenges, companies will have to nurture a new kind of employee—the IT worker of the future—who possesses habits and skills that differ from those in play today. They will also need to develop new techniques for organising, delivering, and evolving the IT mission. Other trends include the Application Programing Interfaces economy, software-‐deZined everything, core renaissance, and ampliZied intelligence. © Dialog Marketing Services 2015 | www.rustreport.com.au | [email protected] Page 3 | March 23, 2015 In collaboration with Singularity University, the report includes a section dedicated to six exponential technologies — innovative disciplines which are evolving fast and whose impact may be profound: artiZicial intelligence, robotics, additive manufacturing, quantum computing, industrial biology, and cybersecurity. impact businesses, government agencies, and potentially even society. A healthy skepticism towards ‘shiny object syndrome’ is required giving the pace and magnitude of change. Tech Trends 2015 looks to short-‐circuit hype cycles, including real-‐ world examples of the trend in action and a prescriptive section covering ‘where do you start’,” concluded Mr Hillard. ” “The report examines tech advances not for technology’s sake, but offers a look at how advancements in IT can signiZicantly 80 percent of businesses fail interim PCI compliance assessment RUST E-RESEARCH Nearly 80 percent of all businesses fail their interim PCI compliance assessment, leaving them vulnerable to cyber attacks, according to Verizon’s 2015 PCI Compliance Report. With more than two-‐thirds of all purchases made with payment cards and $20 trillion in credit card transactions expected for 2015, security has become a top priority for organizations that accept credit cards. By reducing the likelihood of being breached, companies can better manage their brand, ensure consumer trust and potentially avoid hefty fees. In fact, 69 percent of all consumers are less inclined to do business with a breached organization. This year’s Zindings indicate that only 29 percent of companies are still fully PCI DSS-‐compliant less than a year after being validated. While annual compliance and ongoing control standard maintenance remains low, there is a bright spot in the 2015 report. Almost twice as many companies were validated as compliant during their interim compliance review in 2014 as compared with 2013. According to Simonetti, “The three key areas where organizations fall out of compliance are: regularly testing security systems, maintaining secure systems and protecting stored data. Of all the data breaches studied, Verizon’s Zindings clearly show that not a single company was fully PCI DSS-‐compliant at the time of the breach.” Additional key Zindings from the report include: • Between 2013 and 2014, compliance increased for 11 of the 12 PCI DSS controls or, in other words, 60 percent of companies assessed in 2014 were compliant with any given Requirement. • The average increase in compliance was 18 percentage points. • The biggest jump in compliance was in authenticating access (Requirement 8). • The only area where compliance fell was testing security systems (Requirement 11), from 40 percent to 33 percent. Another troubling trend from this year’s report is that data security is still inadequate, said Simonetti. The volume and scale of data breaches in the past 12 months is proof that current security techniques are not stopping attackers — in many cases they aren’t even slowing them down. PCI DSS compliance must be viewed as part of a comprehensive information security and risk-‐ management strategy. A PCI DSS assessment can uncover important security gaps that should be Zixed, but it is not a guarantee that the data is safe from a cyber attack. This year’s report covers three years of data and includesthe results from PCI assessments conducted by Verizon’s team of PCI QualiZied Security Assessors for Fortune 500 and large multinational Zirms in more than 30 countries. In the report, Verizon offers an in-‐depth analysis of each of the 12 PCI requirements, including a look at compliance against the 3.0 standard, with an eye toward the soon-‐to-‐be-‐released 3.1 standard. The 2015 report also includes details of how and where companies fall out of compliance once achieved, and recommendations on how to make compliance easier, featuring actionable recommendations for enterprises that want to stay PCI compliant. Attacks are evolving and increasing every day, however documents still pose one of the highest risks of infection for organisations. Companies need to implement stronger defenses against these attacks. The only way to ensure complete protection is to preemptively remove threats by reconstructing documents with known safe elements. Active content, embedded objects and other exploitable content are simultaneously extracted, and the document is then reconstructed without potential threats to provide 100% safe content. With Check Point Threat Extraction, organisations can protect themselves against both known and unknown threats. In addition to receiving zero malware documents, organisations also need to know if they are under attack. Check Point Threat Emulation, Anti-‐Bot, Intrusion Prevention and Antivirus complement Threat Extraction by detecting malware and providing full visibility and event information to any attack attempts. www.checkpoint.com Interactive Intelligence launches latest enterprise collaboration and communications cloud services Interactive Intelligence has launched its latest cloud services for enterprise collaboration and communications: PureCloud Collaborate and PureCloud Communicate.
