Everywhere we turn today you see and hear about computers, the internet, the information age, the internet of things, etc. During the last several decades, technology and its offerings has become undoubtedly the most important invention of mankind. Today virtually all of the world’s knowledge is only a few taps away, which is truly mind-­‐blowing.
I have recently been asked to recap my 8ifty years in the Australian ICT industry, yes 5 decades of computing from Bureaus to Timesharing, Mainframes, Minis, through to the Internet. The timeline of Computer history stretches wide and far. 50 Years ago computers 8illed a room, notebooks consisted of paper and a pencil and an apple was just a fruit and by far the greatest location of information was in a library or 8iling cabinet.
Over the last 8ive decades, we’ve seen many shifts in not only how we view technology, but how we interact with it; use it in different languages and how it transforms our society and culture. The computer has played the central role in transformation, both accommodating and encouraging ever broader views of ‘information’ and of how it can be transformed and communicated over time and space.
Although we commonly speak of hardware and software in tandem, software was really an artefact of computing in the business and government sectors during the 50’s and 60’s. Only when the computer left the research laboratories and the hands of scientists and engineers did the writing of programs become a question of production. It is in that light that we must view the development of programming languages, operating systems, and databases and 8ile management systems and also communications and networks.

It is always dif8icult to overstate IBM’s role in the history of computing. The company has existed since 1896 and has been an integral part of nearly every IT revolution. IBM developed some of the earliest computers and introduced the FORTRAN programming language. IBM led the PC revolution in the 1980s. IBM became a leader across all aspects of IT, including enterprise software (e.g. DB2, Tivoli, Lotus) storage, servers, and high-­‐end systems. IBM has also helped cloud computing into the IT arena, too. It started touting its Blue Cloud initiative back in 2007, promising a collection of software, hardware and services designed to enable Internet-­‐scale computing. From its very beginning the computer has borne the label “revolutionary”. Even as the 8irst computers were being delivered commentators were extolling or fretting over the radical changes the widespread use of computers would entail and few doubted their use would be widespread. Few people today really want to abandon information technology. Hours spent in a bank line, when the ATM in the supermarket can do the job in seconds. Lose your papers in a less-­‐developed country and trudge, as locals must do all the time from line to line, from of8ice to of8ice and you quickly learn what life is like without technology.
Cloud computing and Big Data are giving enterprises innovation agility today like never seen before; not even possible. This is all about creating applications on demand, deciphering in real time the metrics and analytics currently locked in information. There is also a new era emerging that requires new leaders who have the ability to change and adapt quickly with a future smart eye on what’s possible. The parade of new technologies and scienti8ic breakthroughs is relentless and will unfold on many fronts. Most observers of the IT industry prefer and are expected to talk about what’s coming, not what has happened, and to make educated guesses about the future of the IT industry.

Major players are facing the prospect of not one, but two new taxes now being weighed up by the Abbott Government, following the revelation of loopholes being exploited by Google, Microsoft and Apple to keep their Australian tax payments arti8icially low. There's the suggested "Google tax"—
a possible diverted-­‐pro8its tax, which would be an additional impost on companies diverting sales and pro8its to countries such as Ireland, the Netherlands, Switzerland or Singapore. Google, Apple and Microsoft would, certainly be among the targets – but so would many other IT operations. Then there's the proposed "Net8lix tax", which Rupert Murdoch's News group is urging the Government to apply to overseas-­‐based newcomers to the Australian music and video streaming scene, including Net8lix and Spotify, as well as Internet advertising. Bitcoins to remain unregulated
The Reserve Bank has said bitcoins do not pose a threat to Australia's 8inancial system and therefore do not need regulation. RBA payments policy of8icer Tony Richards said the use of digital currencies is very limited in Australia. "Digital currencies do not currently raise any issues for the bank in terms of the bank's monetary policy and 8inancial stability mandates," he told an inquiry in Sydney. While digital currencies are not legal tender, there is nothing to prevent two parties agreeing to settle a payment using a digital currency, he said.

landmark piracy case
A Federal Court judge has ordered several Australian internet service providers, including iiNet, to hand over to a 8ilm studio the identities of thousands of account holders whose internet connections were allegedly used to share without authorisation the Dallas Buyers Club movie. In a landmark judgment delivered on Tuesday afternoon, Justice Nye Perram ruled in favour of Dallas Buyers Club LLC's "preliminary discovery" application requesting that the ISPs disclose the identities of people it alleges shared the movie online. ISPs Dodo, Internode, Amnet Broadband, Adam Internet and Wideband Networks will also be required to hand over customer details. 4700 Australian internet account holders whose service was used to share Dallas Buyers Club on the internet from as early as May 2013 are soon likely to receive legal letters from Dallas Buyers Club LLC's Australian lawyers threatening legal action. Mercury IT wins Cisco award
South East Queensland-­‐based Mercury IT has been awarded Small to Medium Business (SMB) Partner of the Year at the Cisco Australia and New Zealand Partner Insight Awards. Cisco, a global IT giant that produces hardware, software and networking tech, announced the winners at its Partner Insight event as part of Cisco Live in Melbourne. Mercury IT managing partner Luke Halliday says the national award was based on providing exceptional value to our clients. “As one of the world’s biggest providers of networking software, hardware and utilities, Cisco has been a vital partner of ours during our initial growth, and continues to be a major a major source of strength as we move forward,” says Mr Halliday. “Receiving the award from the company is a major coup for us, and serves as con8irmation of what we’ve been doing to date as a growing business.”

Competition hotting up in the Video Entertainment

A new report from BuddeComm concludes that video streaming is 8inally taking off with more and better broadband coming available to more and more people. There has been an explosion in video applications over broadband; they are now being used by many different industries for advertising, marketing, demonstration, entertainment and communication purposes.
Online video streaming or IPTV already makes up the largest component of internet traf8ic, and is set to continue growing faster than other digital formats.
Unlike in the traditional video entertainment industry, were industry concentration is the name of the game, streaming video is enjoying a far healthier level of competition as more and more companies enter this extremely promising market. The most successful of these has been US-­‐based Net8lix. Since 2010, it has been gradually expanding outside of its domestic market, and has seen its international subscriber base triple between 2012 and 2014. In early 2015 it also entered the Australian market and the threat of its arrival along has seen massive changes to the market here with lower prices, more choice and increased content.
Competition in the Video Entertainment market has reached fever pitch. Driven by the popularity of Net8lix all players in the Australian entertainment market were put on full alert. Belatedly Foxtel lowered the price for its pay TV service to address affordability concerns, but it remains a premium service and it will be interesting to see if this 8inally leads to some real growth for the company. Its triple play model will also address the relative high churn the company is still facing. Telstra and Foxtel are also going to compete head on with each other, aimed at combined beating the rest of the competition.
Access to premium content will continue to be a key issue for companies such as FetchTV, STAN and indeed also Net8lix Australia, as News Corp (Foxtel) has well and truly tied up this market. Overtime those exclusivity contracts will need to be renewed and that will be the time when others will start claiming their share of the premium content market. In the meantime FetchTV is positioning itself as the alternative to Telstra and Foxtel and is delivering the best one-­‐stop-­‐shop service on a very user-­‐friendly platform.
The telecom and ISP players in the market provide their video streaming services to their customers uncapped, so this doesn’t count against their broadband downloading limitations.
TV series rather than movies are driving the current developments. Sport remains tightly controlled by Foxtel and they have so far no serious competition from the video streaming companies. Movie content available – under the basic IPTV subscription -­‐ remains mostly B-­‐ or C-­‐rated; A rated material and new releases are only available at extra charges. BuddeComm remains pessimistic about the fragmentation of the proprietary IPTV business models of most of the players. We predict that consolidation will have to happen.
By far the largest growth in video entertainment comes from user-­‐generated content services such as YouTube, Facebook and a whole new range of services of short, and even super-­‐
short, videos. Catch-­‐up TV would be the second largest category.
Mobile TV/video is forecast to grow strongly, although not quite as dramatically as initially expected. Due to poor data allowance and steep prices, users tend to watch mobile video over WiFi more than over a cellular network.
These developments will signi8icantly in8luence IPTV developments and future models will therefore have to be substantially different from those of today. The best way to envisage this is to look at the smart devices which provide ‘app-­‐like’ interfaces to new content services that supply instant streaming.
There is a correlation between the availability of high-­‐speed broadband and IPTV usage and it is envisaged that further increases in high-­‐speed broadband penetration will drive new IPTV developments. The rapid growth of smartphones and tablets is also giving this market a boost, as well as new business models such as pay-­‐per-­‐view. New IPTV services are already being streamed over these devices as well as over gaming devices.

networks, also the mobile networks are enjoying continuous growth advertising revenues.

New Webroot survey reveals company disconnect
between perception and use of cyber threat

A new report, “Importance of Cyber Threat Intelligence to a Strong Security Posture”, reveals a greater reliance on threat intelligence as a viable enterprise cyber security defense. Commissioned by Webroot, the market leader in cloud-­‐based, real-­‐time internet threat detection, and in partnership with the Ponemon Institute, the study indicates that most companies believe threat intelligence is essential for a well-­‐
rounded cyber security defense and has proven effective in stopping security incidents. However, improvements are necessary to make threat intelligence more timely, accurate and actionable in order to strengthen an organization’s security posture.
Key %indings from the Cyber Threat Intelligence Study include:
40% of companies surveyed had a material security breach in the past 24 months, and 80% believe if they’d had threat intelligence at the time of the breach, they could have prevented or minimized the consequences of the attack
• Current cyber defense practices are not considered effective; only 36% of respondents rate their company’s defense as strong • Almost half of respondents are increasing the amount of intelligence data they receive to prevent or mitigate the consequences of an attack
• 56% say intelligence becomes stale within seconds or minutes, and indicate that the more valuable features of a threat intelligence solution are the ability to implement intelligence and gauge the trustworthiness of the source in real time
• 49% use “fee-­‐based” sources of intelligence, stating free sources are inadequate for comprehensive threat analysis, making it more dif8icult to prioritize threats
• In the next two years, one-­‐third of respondents will increase their threat intelligence budget signi8icantly The new survey features perspectives from 693 IT and IT security professionals in the U.S., with sixty-­‐one percent of respondents in the Fortune 1,000, Global 2,000 and the Forbes List of the Largest Private Companies. It concluded that companies see the potential bene8its and importance of having cyber threat intelligence. However, participants are wary of the reliability of this intelligence, as well as its ability to be actionable. Further, respondents are also dissatis8ied with perceived threat intelligence de8iciencies, such as a surplus of alerts and false positives that make it dif8icult to respond to breaches.
“While the report found that spending on threat intelligence is expected to increase in the next two years, these resources do not necessarily translate to greater security, and it is critical that the information be timely, accurate and actionable to be effective”, said Larry Ponemon, chairman and founder of Ponemon Institute. “The results of the study indicate that, while some companies have 8igured out how to leverage threat intelligence into a viable enterprise security defense, many more have not. But, given the rapidly changing threat landscape, we expect threat intelligence to evolve to the point that it will become a key component of IT security”.
“Businesses are struggling to identify and stop new web threats because they must assess the risk of more unknown objects than before and the rate of change across the threat landscape is faster than their traditional security technologies can keep up with”. said Patrick Kennedy, vice president of enterprise marketing at Webroot. “The study highlights the need for highly accurate and timely threat intelligence to help organizations assess the risk of incoming data, reduce the volume of security incidents, and accelerate response to successful attacks”.
What can organizations do?
To achieve a stronger security posture, organizations should consider integrating real-­‐time threat intelligence into their security infrastructure in order to more quickly assess the risk of unknown IPs, URLs, 8iles and mobile apps before they enter the IT environment. Combining this with experienced staff and appropriate incident response processes will increase an organization’s ability to minimize or prevent serious security incidents.

Sixtree is an Australian-­‐based consultancy that helps organisations reduce complexity and maximise the value of their existing information assets. When talking to customers/prospects what things are top of their agenda’s today? Everyone needs to move faster and more cost-­‐effectively. Organisations realise that they need to own their architecture and take responsibility for its evolution and governance. They need to break down large change programmes into lower risk incremental steps and they need to manage that change on an enterprise platform that supports their business needs now and can evolve into the future.
What are the company’s greatest challenges right now?

Our customers are medium to large organisations across a range of industry verticals which. need to innovate while maintaining control over existing capabilities. They are: Managing growth is the challenge that we are blessed with. The demand for our services is outstripping our current capacity. But where other companies might dilute the quality of their people by hiring "willy nilly" or off-­‐shoring, we are very discerning in how we grow and the people we work with. Finding and nurturing the right people takes a lot of effort, but we are rewarded with quality results and loyal customers. And opportunities? This is a great time to be in information technology.
