Spearfishing historical custodian,
champion spearfisher and long-time
Revesby Workers’ Club member, Mel
Brown has been awarded the Order
of Australia for his outstanding work
in services to the diving and fishing
community of Australia.
Mel has been involved in spearfishing

since 1962 when he had his first dive
at 18 at Bulli headland spearing a rock
cale with an early brass hand spear.
After losing several large Kingfish he
upgraded to a telescopic hand spear
and then to a state of the art Undersea
Bantman. In the early days divers used
Woollen jumpers to keep warm and
homemade dive masks fashioned
from inner tubes and glass.
Mel has one of the largest collections
of diving gear and spear guns in
Australia which Mel has displayed
around the country. He is currently
wor k ing on digitising the vast
amount of spearfishing records and
memorabilia. The records are so good
that they are being utilized by the
CSIRO for current research into fish
stocks and movement.
For 44 years Mel has held various
positions within the diving community
both in USFA AUF , Grey Nurse recovery
team Jervis Bay Marine Park, Abalone
Management Task. His proudest
achievement he says is in the is his role
on the Rock Lobster Management (95
– 03). Mel says when the work began
the fisheries were not doing very well
and with the work achieved a positive
result but with more work needs to be
done to protect and preserve this for
future generations.

By the time this Journal goes to print our
Little Athletics season will be over for
another year! It has been a very positive
season with 231 registered athletes and
more than half of them returning to
compete weekly after Christmas.
First event each week (the 2km) is at
2.20pm.
Bowls Results:
We have had athletes competing in Zone,
Region and State Championships. Our 4
State qualifiers were Madeline Carroll U15
Girls, Imogen Russell U17 Girls, Nelson
Carey U14 Boys and James Bottrill U15
Boys. A tremendous achievement for all
of them.

We also conducted 2 very successful
social events through the season, A
McDonalds’ Fun Night prior to Christmas
(with monies raised being donated to
the RWC Charity), and Bravehearts Track
Classic Night in February where we
had parents and children competing
together to raise awareness and funds
for Bravehearts in the pursuit to eradicate
child sexual abuse. The Community
Spirit evident in our Centre this season
has been tremendous and I thank all
parents, athletes, committee members
and supporters of our Centre for this. Our
Liaison Director John and Life member
Michael have also gone above and
beyond to support us.

A warm welcome to the 2015 Orchid
season.
It is with the greatest sadness that I have
to report the passing of the Australian
Native Orchid Clubs inaugural Liaison
Director and former Workers` Club
President Mr. Pat Rogan.
Pat was instrumental in the setting up
of the Club in 2008 and as such was a
founder member, he was always ready
to help with any problems and give
very sound advice and even after his
retirement his interest did not wane.
Pat was one of the “True Gentlemen” and
will be sorely missed.
The Club sends our heartfelt condolences
to his wife Eunice and family.
The 2015-16 season of athletics will
commence in September 2015 with
registrations being accepted via our
website in August: www.revesbylac.org.au
After some very hot and humid weather
members are busily repotting, feeding
and training their flower spikes to present
the flowers to their best advantage.

Discussions are taking place regarding
the Sunday 13th September Show being
held in the atrium of the Clubs main
building. Agreement has been reached
for the October Show to be held in the

Our track and field season has neared
conclusion with the club boasting no less
than three state champions.
Samantha Geddes in the women’s 100m,
Tay-Leiha Clark in the women’s Triple
Jump and Bryce Coles –Sinclair in the
men’s 3000m Steeplechase were all
victorious and will have the honour of a
laurel wreath adorning their registration
number in 2015/16.
Our Cross country season commenced
late March at the Ridge Athletics Track.
The cross country season continues until
late August so it’s not too late to join in
the fun on a Saturday afternoon after the
children have finished their sports.
It’s a great way to get fit and for the kids
to get some practice before their school
cross country carnivals.
This will be the premier Sarcochilus Show
of the year with visitors coming from as far
away as New Zealand and interstate.
If anyone reading this journal is interested
in joining this sub-branch club they
will be made most welcome. We cater
for novices through to experienced
growers. Meetings are held in the Clubs
McArthur room at 7.30 pm on the fourth
Wednesday of each month between
March and November.
Plant raffles are held at each meeting and
guest speakers attend
Membership fees are $10 per year.

The club has been busy these past few
months but with January being in the
holiday season I haven’t a lot to report.
26th January
We held our Annual Australia Day, a day
of fun and bowls The club was decorated
with the spirit of Australia Day. With only
one green available it was packed with
bowlers, most dressed in an Australia Day
traditional outfit. The day started with
billy tea, damper, golden syrup and anzac
biscuits and then after bowls lunch was our
usual meat pies, mashy peas followed by
lamingtons. As each year, when we hold
this event, it was again a great success.
17th February
We held our final of our Club
Championship Fours. It was a close game
however, the winners were M. Farrugia, J.
Pavey, R. Cottingham, M. McKinley with
runners up M. Holloway, F. Hadden,
B. Graham, M. Pullen.
24th February
We commenced the Georges Rivers
District Pennants (at State level) . We
entered a team in Grade 3 and Grade 4.
Our team in Grade 4 Section B won this
section and when writing this report
were going to a play off with winners of
Section A to see who won Grade 4 and go
to the next level - congratulations girls.
We look forward now to future Club
Championships to be held in the months
to come.

We have covered all bowls championships
for 2014 in previous editions, but there is
still one of our most important “Majors “to
complete the year off & that is the F.F.C.C
of 2014.
Yes we give over 500 chickens out
throughout each year & some lucky
punter will become the FIBRO’S FROZEN
CHICKEN CHAMPION for 2014.
We count the chickens that are won each
game day including twilights but raffles
are excluded. So let’s see who were the
winners; some surprises with guys who
didn’t play much through the year like
Swampy Marsh, & Eric Kauffman each
got15, Billy-O won 16, Bazza 11, then
Rocky 15, Paul Kirgan 14, Russ Delamotte
12, Max 11, Hoppy, Merv, Ken Riley 10,
Singo didn’t make double figures 9 and
so on.
The runner-up in this prestigious event
was Doug Mitchell who turns ninety this
year, he got a respectable 17, not bad for
our knobbly kneed veteran who seldom
misses a game and is still sharp as a tack,
he is always winning chooks or meat trays.
The FIBRO’S FROZEN CHICKEN CHAMPION
for 2014 is Todd Hawkins with 19, a winner
for the 3rd time in a row. Congratulations
on that trifecta Todd, that’s a lot of
chickens to get through. While there is
a lot of luck needed to win, there is also
quite a bit of skill required, so if your
name doesn’t appear above perhaps you
could say you are unlucky, but maybe,
just maybe, perhaps you are N.A.B.A.H.
Hmm, just think about it. For a reward
for winning all those chickens Todd’s dad
Doug was going to give him the keys
to the padlocks on his bar fridge, but
thought “no, I will give him something he
can keep, a bowls cloth will be nice , he
will be really impressed with that. He was!
We had a charity day on March 1st at
Homelea Ave and a very good crowd of
about 70 turned up and made a great
contribution to the Bill Bullard charity of
$1770.00. All very happy with that result.
The day also marked the first (of many we
hope) playing of “The Mongrels” golf team
(their name) who are regular members of
the Fibro but not bowlers. They acquitted
themselves very well on the bowling

green for mostly first time bowlers and
perhaps they may think about coming
over to bowls when the time comes as
many of us bowlers have. When will the
time come? You will know it believe me, I
speak from experience.
Special thanks goes to Denis and Lyn
Gallant for organising the day so well as
usual and to all those who attended and
gave so readily also to those who donated
prizes including Richards Meats and
Banana George both of Selems Parade
Revesby and of course, Revesby Workers’
Club, who are all regular supporters. Also
‘The Mongrels’ kindly donated a bottle
of scotch for our raffle. We can’t forget
all our hard working Bill Bullard Charity
committee led by director Denis Hayward
& all those who volunteered, who always
rise to the occasion when needed. A big
thank you to all.
The first of our championships for 2015,
the Mens Fours has been run and won
by team Ward, that comprised Glenn
Miller, Ray Hopkins, Peter Chown and
skipped by Craig, who defeated skip Ken
Whetton’s team of Helder Pacheco, Merv
Elder and Garry Gibbons. On a big day
of bowls both semi’s were played in the
a.m. with the final played after lunch. The
winning team were far to good for their
opposition in both games, taking less than
the required 21 ends to put both teams
to the sword. They were running hot right
through the comp but never really raised
a sweat. Congratulations.
Revesby Workers Mens Bowling Club are
presently trying to get a Youth Academy
going which will be managed by our
accredited youth worker Paul Sillato and
his committee. We are after youngsters
12-18 year old. We are sure there are
plenty of these about who are looking
for something different. They will be
coached in all aspects of the game by our
coaching staff and Bowls NSW has put
out a special kit for exactly this purpose,
so we hope our members who may have
kids/grandkids etc will take our message
to them about the friendships and other
qualities that are available to those who
play this great game, that is good for
young and old alike.
We belong to zone 12 and have a very
good bunch of juniors in this zone, some
of whom are playing in open company
with more than a little success, one of
our 18 year olds having won a state title
in 2014. So to all those parents/guardians
etc bring them on down to Homelea Ave
Panania or ring Denis on 97715994 for
more info.
We are open for senior members too, to
learn or join our happy club.

Well, the 2014-15 summer season has
almost wound up – and it was another
great season for Revesby Workers Cricket
Club! We had 5 junior sides (U10, U12
Maroon, U12 White, U14 and U16 Maroon)
and 5 senior sides (A1, A2, B, C Grade
Maroon and C Reserve Maroon) make it
to their semi-finals, f rom which the A1s
and U12 Maroons moved straight to their
grand finals. The U12 White, U14, U16
Maroon, A2, B and C Grade Maroon all
played well in their Preliminary Finals, but,
regrettably, none of them was successful!
The Grand Finals will be played after the
writing of this report, so we wish the A1s
and U12 Maroons all the best in their
quests for premiership!
The Football (soccer) Club is having a
bumper 2015 season – with 475+ players
across 38 teams from Grade 6 to Over
45s, and 84 team officials (coaches and
managers). Off the field we have a busy
program of courses and social activities,
including a Grassroots Coaching course,
sports first aid course, and a regular
Saturday night gathering at the Revesby
Workers Club. Come and see our home
games at Marco Playing fields (next to
the RWC Sport and Recreation Club) and
support our Platinum League boys when
they play there every second weekend.
The Bankstown District Cricket
Association, in season 2013-14, introduced
a 1-day shield for each senior grade,
whereby on completion of all 1-day
matches, the teams that were sitting
in first and second place on the 1-day
ladder would play a final to determine
the 1-day premiers. Both the A1’s and
B Grade teams contested the 2014-15
finals for their respective grades, with the
A1’s being victorious in the top grade.
Congratulations to the mighty A1’s!
Our inaugural Kindy summer soccer
program and summer football program
for older kids were a great success and
we will be looking to run these programs
again in summer 2015-16.

GARDEN CLUB

We have been following with pride
the cricket career of one of our former
juniors, Ashleigh Gardner. Ashleigh, who
turned eighteen in April, is a member
of the NSW Breakers squad, and was
selected in the Australian Shooting Stars
cricket team that toured the United
Arab Emirates in April, playing a series
of 50-over and T20 matches. In January
2015, Ashleigh captained the NSW
Metropolitan U18 Female side to victory
in the National Championships, where she
was the leading run scorer and was also
awarded the Player of the Championship.
Congratulations, Ashleigh.
As this goes to print Revesby Workers’
Garden Club and the Revesby Workers’
Native Orchid Club, are getting ready to
present our joint annual event.
We now have the 2015 Masters Cup (Over
35s Super 8s) keeping us busy through
the winter and it won’t be long before
we start signing on for the next summer
comp! See you on Sundays in August at
the Sports & Rec Centre, Homelea Ave
Panania from 10am til noon!
We have many great things planned for
this year, including our guest speaker for
May from the Royal Botanic Gardens. As
well as the highly recommended Ambre
Hammond internationally acclaimed
concert pianist for our June 6th meeting.
Not to be missed, she is a brilliant speaker.

Our tour organiser has some great trips
planned for us this year. The first for
this year, we will be visiting Rouse Hill
Homestead, built in 1832 from sandstone
by convicts. We will view the garden and
enjoy a morning tea. Lunch at Windsor
and visit a nursery on the way home.
We celebrate Seniors Week each year
with an open invitation for seniors in
the Bankstown local area to join us for
morning tea “Gardening for Everyone”, to
be held at the Revesby Workers’ Club. This
year we have two great guest speakers.
Judy Horton, horticulturist and garden
expert will give a talk and presentation on
gardens of the 20th Century. Chris Lloyd,
an absolute bird expert, will speak on the
Powerful Owl.
Our garden club has just celebrated 26
years, so we must be doing something
right. Everyone is welcome, so please
come and join us 10am 1st Saturday
of the month, Cabaret room, Revesby

With quality golf courses like Bankstown,
Links Shell Cove, Rosnay, Hurstville
and Campbelltown on offer, interest
and attendance has been very high
for the games played during the first
three months of 2015. The main event
completed was the Singles Matchplay
Championship and congratulations must go
to John Lovett as the new ìCock-of-the-Walkî
champion after his victory over a defiant Ian
Lindberg in the Matchplay final at the Links
Shell Cove Championship layout.
The Club Championship has just started and
is expected to finish at the end of March.
The next couple of months will be hectic
with games played at New Brighton, Antill
Park, Rosnay, Campbelltown, Links Shell Cove,
Hurstville, Goulburn and Cypress Lakes.
Some events will be high profile (Merv
Pell and 2BBB Championship), and don’t
forget there will be the Revesby to
Goulburn challenge match in early April,
the trip away to Cypress Lakes in May, and
finally, the annual Bowls challenge in June
between Revesby Golfers and Revesby
Bowlers at the Revesby Bowls Club - the
reigning champions are the Bowlers :-)
The schedule of remaining courses for
2015 is quite varied, with a dozen rounds
at our home course Bankstown, and
several rounds each at Campbelltown,
Antill Park, Rosnay, Hurstville, Glenmore
and Links Shell Cove.

Since our last report Summer has come
and gone and during that time we were
quite active on the river at Mooney
Mooney we attended several medical
tasks with the Ambulance Service.

LADIES GROUP

The Ladies’ Group resumed on 28th
January. On our first outing for the year
we enjoyed a tour of the south end of the
Central Coast. After another of Phyllis’s
(always) salubrious morning teas, we had
a fish ‘n’ chips lunch at Patonga. We then
returned via Empire Bay, Kincumber and
West Gosford before returning to Sydney
after a very enjoyable day.
We have been enlightened by three very
interesting speakers, Jennifer Madden
from the Bankstown Library, Steve Jacka
from Bankstown Police, and the beautiful
and very talented Ambre Hammond,
a pianist who travels to remote areas
around the world giving concerts to
underpriviledged people. Thanks to
Norma Warburton and Bev Spring for
arranging these speakers.
Our AGM was held on Wednesday 11th

Our major training was a combined fire
and retrieval exercise with all of the RFS,
Police and the Maritime units from along
the river.
For all the fishing and boating
communities, Marine Rescue has released
a free App to allow you to log on via your
smart phone.
I would like to thank the club for their
continued support of us and those in our
area.
Our next assist event will be the Big
Morning Tea at the club on the 28th May
2015.

PHYSIE AND DANCE

Revesby Workers Physie and Dance have
had a great start to the year, we welcome
back our previous members as well as
many new faces. All of the girls have been
very excited about learning their new
work, not only is it fun and great exercise,
but the girls have enjoyed the challenge
of learning a new routine.
Our competition season starts in July and
the girls will be working hard in perfecting
their routines in the upcoming months.

SPEARFISHING GROUP

This year started out with a good turn out
to the Southern Zone presentation held at
Currawong “Bowlo” Club. It was an exciting
weekend with a huge southerly swell
battering the exposed coastline, Currawong
was as calm as a mill pond till you ventured
past the protecting headland and you
were met head on by a 4 meter rampaging
ocean. Despite these trifling distractions
Troy managed to win the inaugural cash
prize of the RWSC Mini Cup, with a nice 10
kg plus Kingfish. Some very nice Sashimi
and cold beers in the afternoon. Bargo had
a new full on experience with a flat battery,
full boat and a long swim, witnessed by a

cast of Cecil B De Mills proportion and the
reliable support of Club members. Never a
dull moment
This past year we came this close to winning
the Taylor shield, only to be foiled by flat seas
and a cancelled comp at Bendalong. Maybe
2016 will be the year to break the drought.
The South Coast Champs was a organised
marvel proving many hands make light
work. A well organised comps with a load of
sponsor support, favourable weather and a
over 50 competitors made the weekend a
outstanding success. Special thanks to Troy,
Mark GC, young Joey Hodge and all others
for all the good work. Congratulation once
again to Jack for winning despite having his
trusty work horse of a boat swamped with
all hands on deck. Ric is off North for his
annual Barra fishing Trip as is Garry before
heading off to Mexico for a trip of a life time
spearing some very big fish along with Troy
GC and others. Have a great trip.
The Workers’ quiet achiever award has dual
winners this time round. First off to our very
own ‘Top Gun’ Peter Lennon son of our
famous John Lennon (No Yoko). For being
accepted into the Australian Air force to
commence fighter pilot training. This is an
incredible rare opportunity to achieve and
Peter is understandably thrilled, and John is
beaming with pride. And the other winner
is Mel Brown, Spearfishing custodian who
has received the order of Australia for one 44
years dedication to diving and recreational
fishing in Australia.

Eden June long weekend.

SMALL BOATS FISHING CLUB

The weather is cooling and hopefully
calming the seas. Fishing has been lean
but laughter high. Some decent fish still
weighed in. To be competitive ensure you
understand the rules, and if unsure feel
free to ask a committee member. We are
coming to the end of the season where it
is a tight race for the winners. Please see
the board for details and ensure you place
your name down for presentation day in
July and the AGM which follows two weeks
later. Positions to be re-elected.
Membership opens at end of July, all
encouraged for everyone. All genders and
ages. Boat owners welcome but you can also
fish from the shore or join a crew as people
always welcome to fill the boats. Our official
fishing weekend is the last full weekend of
the month but now with the added flexibility
where you can nominate one of the days
to an alternative weekend where any fish
caught will count to that month’s end catch,
gives everyone the opportunity. Names and
details must be on board prior to the event
and let the reef captain or weigh master
know for safety and your valuable catch to be
weighed in. Greenwell point fishing trip also
coming up where I am sure many stories will
come out of it. Whether true or not will be a
different story. But the bigger the better just
like the fish caught.
We are a long standing club and operate
out of the Spence street location. Come
down and meet the group, have a laugh
and become part of the family. Two of
our fellow fishing members have still been
in hospital and we wish them a speedy
recovery - Peter Taylor and Terry Semlitzky.

On 21 February our club hosted the
International Evaluation and Speech
Competition. Paul O’Brien from our club
placed 2nd in the Evaluation Competition.

acknowledgement to RWC Director
Christine Butters for all her support with
this event.

People come to our club meetings for
different reasons but the one comment I
