DESIGN AND CREATE REALLY COOL MOTORIZED
GADGETS TO KEEP AND USE AT HOME!
Grades 6-8
Instructors: Kelly Robinson, Pollard Engineering and
Design Teacher; and Emily Webering, Pollard Science
Teacher
This class will begin with us building spin art machines
with two different gear drives, which have different ratios.
We will use our machines to conduct experiments with
splatter paint and markers that will teach us about torque
and gear drives. We will also explore the relationship
between torque, inertia and acceleration and the
importance of weight balance in spinning machines.
These principles will then be applied as we learn how
to build advanced gear drives with more torque. In this
segment, you will build your own electric pencil sharpener.
For your final project, you will apply what you have learned
to design and build an electric mixer that has enough
torque to make instant pudding or yogurt smoothies.
Students will be able to take home all projects.

Grades 3-5
Instructors: Caitlin MacDonald, Newman 3rd Grade TA;
and Vanessa Iorlano, Newman 4th Grade Teacher
Design and create your own miniature dream home
using household items, art supplies, and a whole lot of

chopsticks? A toilet from the top of a vitamin bottle? We

save. Our work will be done using many disposable
household items, cloth, felt, wood scraps, cardboard,
wood beads, old jewelry, lace, paint, glue and too many
other items to list! Use your creativity to design your
bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and family room. Want to
create a specialty room? You may add window shutters

TIME TRAVEL: Colonial America
NEW!
Grades 3-6
Instructor: Peter Caccavale, NHS Latin Teacher
Travel back in time to learn about the daily lives of people
during the American Revolution and the Colonial period.
We will examine the lives of both the elite and poor
classes of Americans, as well as those who supported
Revolution and those who were against such action. By
focusing specifically on the city of Boston and the town
of Needham, the class will have a local context. What did
people do for work? What did their houses look like? How
did they live? We will watch videos and read primary
sources from Colonial Boston in order to understand the
beginnings of the American Revolution. Our activities
will include a “daily journal” in which students take on
the persona of a Colonial American in Needham and
write about his/her daily life. This journal will be based
on the research we do in class. As a culminating activity,
students will perform a mock “dinner party” in which they
take on their persona (including a costume, if they want)
and give a quick description of their character and his/
her feelings on the upcoming revolution.
a mock archaeological excavation in order to learn how
we uncover the secrets of the ancient world through the
clues it has left behind. Our classes will consist of many
visual images/videos, hands on web explorations, and
skits/reenactments in small groups. In the culminating
project, students will do a mock “dinner party” in which
they take on the persona (including a costume, if
desired) of a famous Greek or Roman or mythological
character and give a quick description of their character

Instructors: NPS Staff Members
NCE will once again offer its popular summer volunteer
program for NHS students. Currently in the development

services for the selected non-profit organizations, and
earn one community service learning credit in the
process.
The faculty leader will escort the team members by
public transportation to the volunteer site. They will also
educate you on the mission of the organization and
the cause it addresses. A fee will be charged to cover
the cost of the faculty member. Participants will be
responsible for the cost of public transportation.

details and a registration form. Information will also be
included in the News from the Hill.
