• The £8.5 million Doug Ellis Sports
Centre at our City North Campus,
features an indoor sports hall, 80
station fitness suite and dance and
aerobic studios, as well as changing
and social facilities.
• The Pavilion is a £4.5 million, purpose
built sports facility featuring 12 grass
pitches, an all–weather pitch, two
rugby pitches and two cricket nets.
English language skills
• Overall satisfaction with the quality of our
courses was 84 per cent in the 2014
National Student Survey (NSS); with
88 per cent of our students agreeing that
staff were good at explaining things and
86 per cent saying staff were enthusiastic
about what they taught.
• 100 per cent of students on our Creative
Arts and Design (other) courses are
satisfied overall, as are 99 per cent of
students on our Accountancy courses
and 96 per cent of our Finance students.

Pathways at Birmingham City University
BCUIC offers a modern and dynamic educational experience,
and is committed to providing academic and support
services in an environment that encourages you to achieve
excellence in your studies. The college offers a range of
undergraduate and postgraduate pathways, as well as an
English Language course.
Undergraduate pathways
An undergraduate pathway is a single
course comprising four stages of study. After
successfully completing this programme you
will be awarded a Bachelor’s degree from
Birmingham City University.
University Foundation
The University Foundation programme is
Stage 1 of the undergraduate pathway. The
transition from high school to university is a
big step, perhaps the most important in your
life. The staff at BCUIC understand this, and
will provide you with ongoing guidance and
support, as well as the knowledge and skills
you need. This partnership between you and
the BCUIC staff will make your transition a
smooth one.

Second Year Degree and
Final Year Degree
The Second and Final Year Degrees are
stages 3 and 4 of the undergraduate
pathway, and are taught at Birmingham

Postgraduate pathway
A postgraduate pathway is a single course
comprising two stages of study. When you
successfully complete the pathway you
will be awarded a Master’s degree from
Birmingham City University.
First Year Degree
Pre-Master’s
The First Year Degree is Stage 2 of the
undergraduate pathway. You will experience
the first-year curriculum of Birmingham
City University, but with smaller class sizes
and extra academic contact hours. The
teaching and learning experience will enable
you to fully develop your knowledge and
The Pre-Master’s programme is Stage 1 of
the postgraduate pathway. It is one, two or
three semesters long, depending on your
chosen pathway. It has been designed to
prepare international students who have
not qualified for direct entry to Birmingham
City University’s Master’s degrees.
Undertaking the Pre-Master’s programme
will allow you to adjust to the rigorous
research and independent study requirements
of a postgraduate degree and help you get
the most out of your Master’s studies at
Birmingham City University.
Master’s
The Master’s degree is Stage 2 of the
postgraduate pathway, and is taught
by Birmingham City University.
English language
English language is a full-time course
specifically designed for international students
who need to improve their level of English
before starting undergraduate or postgraduate
academic studies. The course suits students
with different levels of English competence
and is offered by Birmingham City University’s
Centre for Academic Success.

Birmingham is the second–largest city in the United Kingdom,
with an area of 80 square miles and a population of over a
million people, including more than 65,000 students. It is a
vibrant, multicultural city where people enjoy living, studying,

Where is Birmingham?
Birmingham is located in the centre of the
West Midlands region of England. The city
is at the centre of England and at the hub of
its transport network, making it a great base
from which to explore the UK and mainland
Europe. London is only one and a half hours
away by train. Birmingham Airport, just 30
minutes by taxi from the Bournville campus,
offers direct flights to the USA, North Africa,
Dubai and European destinations with
connections worldwide via Amsterdam,
Frankfurt and Istanbul.

Birmingham is a European centre for retail,

There are many advantages of undertaking BCUIC
undergraduate pathways. They include a seamless
transition from high school to university.
While the initial stages of your university life
are the most important, often this is when
many students feel anxious and homesick.
We understand this and have put processes
in place to ease the transition from
high school to university-level studies.

Birmingham, the sporting city
The home of Aston Villa, West Bromwich Albion and
Birmingham City FC offers plenty of opportunities
to watch and compete in all kinds of sport.
Everyone is welcome to compete in sport at
Birmingham City University and the Student
Union caters for a wide spectrum of sports.
Sports facilities at Moor Lane span 43 acres.
The £4.5 million Moor Lane Pavilion opened
in 2004 and has 12 grass pitches and an
all-weather floodlit pitch. You can join any
number of sports clubs including kick boxing,
netball, football, hockey, rugby and cricket.
Our £8.5 million sports centre based at our
City North Campus boasts a wide range of
sports facilities for both students and staff
of the University and members of the local
community including:
• a sports hall big enough to
accommodate eight badminton courts
• an 80 station fitness suite
• dance and aerobic studios.
You can indulge your passion for sport
somewhere in or around the city. As a major
sporting centre and venue, Birmingham
hosts a number of World and European
Championships. The National Indoor Arena
(NIA) is Britain’s top indoor sporting venue,
holding a range of events including Davis
Cup Tennis, world-class badminton, table
tennis, judo and power lifting, basketball,
wrestling and international athletics.
International cricket takes place at
Edgbaston, home of Warwickshire County
Cricket Club and the renowned Brabazon
golf course at The Belfry, just outside the
city, has been the venue for three Ryder
Cup tournaments. Other venues include
The Ackers in Birmingham city centre for
abseiling, archery, skiing, rock climbing
and other adventure sports. There are also
a number of local swimming pools and
gyms whose facilities you can use.
