Year Long—Carnegie Unit Courses
Foundations of Engineering and Technology—Year
Long Carnegie Unit Course:
This is an opportunity for 8th grade students to earn
high school credit with a Carnegie Unit course in Career and Technology Education. Foundations of Engineering and Technology is the introductory course for
all Georgia Engineering and Technology Education
pathways. This course provides students with opportunities to develop fundamental technological literacy
as they learn about the history, systems, and processes of invention and innovation.
Foundations in Engineering & Technology will concentrate on the development of skills that are required for
all Engineering & Technology career pathways. Students will have the opportunity to:
 take on a leadership role and be empowered
with technology tools
 learn effective Engineering communication skills
 work with Engineering software application
(AutoCAD, Inventor)
 be introduced to the world of Design
 get an overview of emerging technologies impacting Engineering Design
This course is designed to prepare students to be successful both professionally and personally in an information-based society.
Spanish—Year Long Carnegie Unit Course:
¡Hola estudiantes, vamanos a la clase de español! If
you are interested in learning a new language,
intrigued by exploring other cultures, or simply want
to get a head start on your study of a second language
to be ready for high school then Spanish class is the
place for you. We will learn some basic vocabulary
and phrases through a variety of activities such as
music, games, and technology along with oral and
written practice. We will study the countries where
Spanish is spoken to learn about the cultures while
participating in some of the typical customs and
traditions through crafts, music, and other activities.
So come on “vamanos” to Spanish class where you
have the opportunity to Discover Languages…Discover
the World!

Introduction to Digital Technology—Year Long Carnegie
Unit Course:
Students will focus on project-based activities to successfully master the skills and knowledge that will provide a
technology-rich foundation as students navigate their
educational journey.
Introduction to Digital Technology will concentrate on the
development of computer skills that are required for all
career pathways. Students will have the opportunity to:
 take on a leadership role and be empowered with
technology tools (hardware and software)
 learn effective digital communication skills
 work with web design applications
 be introduced to the world of programming
 get an overview of emerging technologies impacting
the digital world
This course is designed to prepare students to be successful both professionally and personally in an informationbased society.

French—Year Long Carnigie Unit Course:
Bonjour! Bienvenue à la clase de français! If you are interested in learning a new language, intrigued by exploring
other cultures, or simply want to get a head start on your
study of a second language to be ready for high school
then French class is the place for you. We will learn some

8th Grade Connections Course Offerings
Technology Education: This course is designed for
Physical Education: Physical education is an
students to utilize the design process. Students will
examine various systems, such as; electrical, magnetic,
mechanical, structural, natural, thermal, chemical, and
information. Students will learn how systems can work
together. Technological Systems reinforces the areas of
math, science, social studies, and language arts through
practical application and/or hands on activities. At the end
of this course, students will be able to utilize the design
process and universal systems model to design and
produce a technological product.
exciting activity based course that allows you to
participate in variety of activities both indoors and
outside. While in PE you will have the opportunity to
participate in outdoor interest like flag football, soccer,
track and field, and blacktop games. Indoor games and
activities for PE students include Texas Battleball,
Gotcha, Downer Ball, and Rooster Tail. In addition to
these activities, students will also work daily to improve
all aspects of their health related fitness and complete
the FitnessGram assessment to determine their overall
fitness levels.
Visual Arts: Visual Arts is a fine arts course where
you will explore the elements and principles of design
through hands on learning. Students will learn about
different art mediums by creating two dimensional and
three-dimensional projects, as well as exploring art
history and various careers in the arts.
Theater Arts—Year Long: 8th Grade Theatre Arts
will be a year-long class for the 2015-2016 school year.
Students will learn the Elements of Theatre through
performances of full length plays. This will involve
Acting students & those interested in all aspects of
Technical Theatre including Sound, Lighting, Costuming
& Prop building. See Mr. Hadden for an audition or
interview for the area(s) you are interested in learning.
Journalism: Who? What? Where? When?
Why? How? These are the questions we will
answer as we uncover the various forms of print and
broadcast journalism. Our class will discuss
newspapers, magazines, photographs, radio, television,
and the internet. We will be reviewing and reinforcing
reading and writing objectives with a goal of improving
these skills. In order to do this, we will watch the news,
Health: Health classes are designed to give students
a better understanding of the human body and all
aspects of health. Health students will engage in class
discussions and other activities to gain a better
understanding of health and wellness related topics.
Some of the topics students will explore include
resolving conflict, negative effects of various drugs on
the body, internet safety, healthy nutritional choices,
and first aid emergencies.
Connections Preferences
Beginning in 2015-16, Creekland Middle would
like to offer 7th students and their parents the
opportunity to rank their connections preferences for the upcoming year. To submit
preferences, please click the link in the News
tool on the CMS Landing page or go to the
CMS website (www.creeklandmiddle.org) and
click the link titled “Rising 8th grade 2015-16
connections preference form. Complete the
form and submit your top 6 choices. * Please
note that chorus, band, orchestra, French,
Spanish, Intro to Digital Technology, and
Foundations of Engineering are yearlong
courses.
For course preferences to be considered in
placement, they must be submitted online by
Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at 10:00 p.m. A paper
version may be picked up from the 7th grade
academy office and must be turned in by Tuesday, May 5, at 4:00 pm.

availability. Please understand that your commitment to any year long course is for ENTIRE
YEAR. After making the selection for the
year, you must remain in the course for the
ENTIRE YEAR.
