THE WOODLANDS AREA CHAMBER of COMMERCE BUSINESS TODAY Community Job Fair Connecting Employers & Employees April 18 May 3 April 2013 Message from the President & CEO Advertising vs. Marketing St. Luke’s The Woodlands Hospital ... Top 10 in the Houston Metro Area. Being named one of the Top 10 hospitals in the Houston Metro Area and receiving recognition as high-performing in neurology & neurosurgery and orthopedics is an honor. Yet, what’s truly impressive is not the praise, but the people who’ve earned it — the doctors, nurses and staff who give our patients their best, year after year. And to our patients and their loved ones, we thank you for the trust you place in us. You’re the reason we never stop reaching further and striving to be even better. Sometimes I run across an article that just cuts to the heart of a subject and deserves re-printing. One of the most frequently requested subjects when our Affinity Team does their annual survey is: “Tell us the difference between Advertising and Marketing”. Even some of our most experienced business people have trouble defining it exactly, so it is no wonder that new business owners are confused. The article below clears that up and treats it with humor which makes it memorable. Our Karen Hoylman thanks to the Better Business Bureau for letting us reprint the article–the original author is unknown. WHAT IS THE BEST DEFINITION OF MARKETING? If you answered “sales”, you would be only partially right! Actually, selling is just one component of marketing. Let me explain further– using a little imagery. If the circus is coming to town and you paint a sign saying, “Circus is coming to the Fairgrounds on Sunday,” that’s ADVERTISING. If you put a sign on the back of an elephant and walk him through town, that’s a PROMOTION. If the elephant convinces people in town to attend the circus, that’s SALES. If the elephant walks through the mayor’s flower bed, that’s PUBLICITY. If you can get the mayor to laugh about it, that’s PUBLIC RELATIONS. And if you planned the whole thing, that’s MARKETING! Once you understand that “marketing” is really an umbrella that encompasses several elements for the purpose of getting someone to buy your brand, you’ll want to incorporate all elements into your marketing plan. Happy Marketing! Karen L. Hoylman President & CEO online READ IT...WITH JUST ONE CLICK! Its goal is to inspire students to start seeking answers to the question: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” More than 20 years later, EfTA’s Student Internship Program (SIP) continues to support students as they explore career options. SIP offers bright, motivated high school seniors hands-on work experience in a variety of career fields. Internships have great potential to not only further students’ education but to also give them an edge after high school as they apply for college and pursue professional careers. In addition, the process of applying offers insights to the job search and introduces students to the value of networking and developing transferrable skills that can eventually be included on a resume.
