I am so excited about the Woodlands Trail. I remember Katie Brasted busy on her laptop years ago (way before most people had one) during gymnastics class at Aurora Country Club. I would never have imagined that this was her special project! Barbara Benson of the University of Louisiana Lafayette and her students in Naturalist and Docent Practices have volunteered their services to Woodlands Trail and Park for the spring semester. During the 2006 spring semester, students received some hand-on experience using GPS equipment to locate the trail system that was essentially indiscernible following Hurricane Katrina. This year, Benson's class will be helping the Woodlands Trail and Park move its vision forward by conducting some site assessments. Brasted visited the class at ULL on Feb. 14 to provide an overview of the park effort and aerial and property maps with the students. Under the direction of Benson, the students are spending two weekends at the Woodlands Trail and Park site in Belle Chasse this semester to conduct a site assessment for parking areas and entrance area amenities. As land has not been acquired for an interpretive center, the ULL students will evaluate potential sites for one near Woodlands Trail and a potential site in Lower Coast Algiers. For information on Woodlands Trail and Park, contact Our Lady of Holy Cross College, 4123 Woodland Drive, New Orleans, LA 70131 or 106 Avenue G, Belle Chasse, LA 70037 or call (504) 433-4000. .......
